In this study, a new type of composite modified bitumen was developed by blending styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) and crumb rubber (CR) with a chemical method to satisfy the durability requirements of waterproofing material in the waterproofing layer of high-speed railway subgrade. A pressure-aging-vessel test for 20, 40 and 80 h were conducted to obtain bitumen samples in different long-term aging conditions. Multiple stress creep recovery (MSCR) tests, linear amplitude scanning tests and bending beam rheometer tests were conducted on three kinds of asphalt binders (SBS modified asphalt, CR modified asphalt and SBS/CR composite modified asphalt) after different long-term aging processes, including high temperature permanent deformation performance, resistance to low temperature thermal and fatigue crack. Meanwhile, aging sensitivities were compared by different rheological indices. Results showed that SBS/CR composite modified asphalt possessed the best properties before and after aging. The elastic property of CR in SBS/CR composite modified asphalt improved the ability to resist low temperature thermal and fatigue cracks at a range of low and middle temperatures. Simultaneously, the copolymer network of SBS and CR significantly improved the elastic response of the asphalt SBS/CR modified asphalt at a range of high temperatures. Furthermore, all test results indicated that the SBS/CR modified asphalt possesses the outstanding ability to anti-aging. SBS/CR is an ideal kind of asphalt to satisfy the demand of 60 years of service life in the subgrade of high speed railway.

Crumb rubber-modified bitumen (CRMB) has been utilized in the asphalt paving industry for decades due to its various benefits. The complex interaction between bitumen and crumb rubber as well as the addition of warm-mix additives makes the typical laws of Newtonian fluids insufficient to describe the behaviors of highly modified bituminous binders. To systematically explore the non-Newtonian behaviors of CRMB, a dynamic shear rheometer was utilized to apply shear loading on the samples at various temperatures and shear rates. Results show that the viscosity of different binders are highly temperature- and shear rate-dependent, while highly modified binders exhibit more obvious shear-thinning behaviors at certain temperatures. With the help of zero shear viscosity and yield stress, the shear-thinning behaviors of non-Newtonian binders can be sufficiently characterized. The Arrhenius equation is invalid to describe viscosity-temperature characteristics of bitumen in the non-Newtonian region. A second-order polynomial function was proposed to characterize the viscosity-temperature dependence with a high correlation degree.

The effects of modified natural zeolite warm mix agent (MNZWMA) and organic viscosity reducing warm mix agent (OVRWMA) on the physical properties, short term thermal oxidation aging, long term thermal oxidation aging and UV aging properties of the crumb rubber modified bitumen (CRMB) were investigated. The results showed that MNZWMA and OVRWMA could improve the high temperature stability and the low temperature crack resistance of CRMB, respectively. During the short term thermal oxidation aging, long term thermal oxidation aging and UV aging, OVRWMA increased softening point increment (SPI) and viscosity aging index (VAI) of CRMB, however, MNZWMA decreased its SPI and VAI. The analysis of FTIR spectra indicated that MNZWMA reduced the formation of carbonyl groups and sulfoxide groups, but OVRWMA accelerated the formation of carbonyl groups and sulfoxide groups to some extent during ultraviolet aging. Therefore, MNZWMA could improve the anti-aging properties, and OVRWMA was not conducive to the anti-aging properties of CRMB.

Considering large number production of the abandoned tyres and the question of the concrete with mixture of crumb rubber, the mainly task of this paper is to study the mechanical properties of different mixing ratio concrete with vary volume of crumb rubber. The results showed that the workability, apparent density, compressive strength, flexural strength and brittleness index decrease as the increase of crumb rubber. While the anti-crack performance and anti-fatigue performance can be improved. The wear-resistance properties are a little lower than common concrete.
