Electron diffraction intensities can be obtained at large scattering angles (sinθ/λ ≥ 2.0), and thus structure information can be collected in regions of reciprocal space that are not accessable with other diffraction methods. LACBED intensities in this range can be utilized for determination of accurate temperature factors or for refinement of coordinates. Such high index reflections can usually be treated kinematically or as a pertubed two-beam case. Application to Y Ba2Cu3O7 shows that a least square refinememt based on integrated intensities can determine temperature factors or coordinates.LACBED patterns taken in the (00l) systematic row show an easily recognisable pattern of narrow bands from reflections in the range 15 < l < 40 (figure 1). Integrated intensities obtained from measured intensity profiles after subtraction of inelastic background (figure 2) were used in the least square fit for determination of temperature factors and refinement of z-coordinates for the Ba- and Cu-atoms.

The transverse voltage generated by a temperature gradient in a perpendicularly applied magnetic field, termed the Nernst effect, has promise for thermoelectric applications and for probing electronic structure. In magnetic materials, an anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) is possible in a zero magnetic field. We report a colossal ANE in the ferromagnetic metal UCo0.8Ru0.2Al, reaching 23 microvolts per kelvin. Uranium’s 5f electrons provide strong electronic correlations that lead to narrow bands, a known route to producing a large thermoelectric response. In addition, uranium’s strong spin-orbit coupling produces an intrinsic transverse response in this material due to the Berry curvature associated with the relativistic electronic structure. Theoretical calculations show that in UCo0.8Ru0.2Al at least 148 Weyl nodes, and two nodal lines, exist within 60 millielectron volt of the Fermi level. This work demonstrates that magnetic actinide materials can host strong Nernst and Hall responses due to their combined correlated and topological nature.

AbstractWidespread and repeated use of glyphosate resulted in an increase in glyphosate-resistant (GR) weeds. This led to an urgent need for diversification of weed control programs and use of PRE herbicides with alternative sites of action. Field experiments were conducted over a 4-yr period (2015 to 2018) across three locations in Nebraska to evaluate the effects of PRE-applied herbicides on critical time for weed removal (CTWR) in GR soybean. The studies were laid out in a split-plot arrangement with herbicide regime as the main plot and weed removal timing as the subplot. The herbicide regimes used were either no PRE or premix of either sulfentrazone plus imazethapyr (350 + 70 g ai ha−1) or saflufenacil plus imazethapyr plus pyroxasulfone (26 + 70 + 120 g ai ha−1). The weed removal timings were at V1, V3, V6, R2, and R5 soybean stages, with weed-free and weedy season-long checks. Weeds were removed by application of glyphosate (1,400 g ae ha−1) or by hoeing. The results across all years and locations suggested that the use of PRE herbicides delayed CTWR in soybean. In particular, the CTWR without PRE herbicides was determined to be around the V1 to V2 (14 to 21 d after emergence [DAE]) growth stage, depending on the location and weed pressure. The use of PRE-applied herbicides delayed CTWR from about the V4 (28 DAE) stage up to the R5 (66 DAE) stage. These results suggest that the use of PRE herbicides in GR soybean could delay the need for POST application of glyphosate by 2 to 5 wk, thereby reducing the need for multiple applications of glyphosate during the growing season. Additionally, the use of PRE herbicides could provide additional modes of action needed to manage GR weeds in GR soybean.


Many years ago it was suggested by Hartley* that the limit of the solar spectrum towards the ultra-violet was attributable to absorption by atmospheric ozone, which, as he showed, would give rise to a general absorption beginning at about the place where the solar spectrum ends. In a recent paper by Prof. A. Fowler and myself,† the evidence for this view was very much strengthened. For it was shown that just on the limits of extinction the solar spectrum shows a series of narrow absorption bands which are eventually merged in the general absorption, and these narrow bands are precisely reproduced in the absorption spectrum of ozone. For my own part, I do not feel any doubt that ozone in the atmosphere is the effective cause limiting the solar spectrum.

The supracrustal rocks of the Loch Maree Group (LMG) consist of a variety of metasedimentary rocks interbanded with amphibolites considered to be of volcanic origin. The metasedimentary rocks fall into two distinct categories: a) schistose semipelites, which form the main part of the outcrop; and b) narrow bands of different rock types, including siliceous, carbonate-bearing and graphitic rocks, occurring in close association with the metavolcanic amphibolites. Both the compositional banding and the dominant foliation throughout the LMG outcrop are steeply dipping and trend uniformly NW-SE.The sequence of lithotectonic rock units from SW to NE (structurally upwards) is shown in the cross-section (Fig. 4.1) and briefly described in Table 4.1. The original names of the lithotectonic units (Park 1964) are retained for convenience. The depositional age of the LMG is presumed to be around 2.0 Ga, based on a Sm-Nd model age (O'Nions et al. 1983) and detrital zircon dates (Whitehouse et al. 1991 a, 2001) (see below).Semipelites form several distinct NW-trending belts separated by amphibolite sheets. The most prominent belt comprises the Flowerdale schist unit (see map) which occupies a broad belt about 700 m in width, extending in a northwesterly direction across the Gairloch district, but ending north of the mapped area, where the two amphibolites from either side converge, 3.5 km north of the Gairloch-Poolewe road. This belt is offset in the centre of the area by the Flowerdale fault, and has a total exposed length of about 15 km. Southwest of this belt is the


In the course of an investigation on the spectra of the halogens and other substances excited by active nitrogen, Strutt and Fowler (1912) observed that, when bromine was admitted into the glowing nitrogen, a feeble orange luminosity was developed. Visual observation with a spectroscope revealed eight narrow bands in the orange region of the spectrum, at intervals of about 28 A. In addition to these bands, a broad symmetrical band with ill-defined edges at 2930 and 2890 A was photographed. This work does not appear to have been followed up.' As the apparatus used for a recent similar investigation with chlorine was available (Cameron and Elliott 1938), it seemed worth while attempting to photograph the orange bands with the rapid panchromatic material now available. This attempt has proved successful, and the results will now be described.
