Nanfen open-pit iron mine is the largest single open-pit mine in Asia. Because of the lag of the extension project, the section has slowly spread in the shape of “V,” and disasters such as landslides occur frequently. In this study, first, the NPR anchor cable monitoring, which shows supernormal mechanical characteristics and can realize the monitoring and early warning target for the whole landslide process and early warning curve of bedding rock “2016-1101 landslide” in the lower wall of Nanfen open-pit mine, was analyzed, revealing the failure process of the bedding rock landslide and the force evolution characteristics of the NPR anchor cable. Then, based on the Fish language in FLAC3D and 3DEC software, the mechanical model of the NPR anchor cable was constructed, and numerical simulation was performed on the whole process of “16-1101 landslide” induced by accumulation of old landslide body. The results of this study indicate that the stress monitoring curves and failure characteristics of the NPR anchor cables in the whole process of landslide by the two numerical simulation methods are basically consistent with the field measurement results, providing a theoretical and practical basis for the mechanistic analysis and numerical simulation of other similar slopes.

In an open-pit mine slope, rock mass has multiple joint structures and blasting operations have an obvious influence on its stability. Therefore, accurately predicting the blasting vibration is necessary to ensure slope stability. In this study, the blasting vibration signals monitored at a blasting site with different rock masses were used to investigate the attenuation characteristics of blasting vibration through the peak particle velocity (PPV), frequency characteristics, and energy distribution of the blasting vibration signals analyzed with the time-frequency processing method. The results demonstrated that the main vibration frequency of the blasting vibration of dolomite was wider than that of shale, and these main vibration frequencies occurred at 25 kHz and 14 kHz for dolomite and shale, respectively, at a distance of 50 m from the blast area to the vibration monitoring point. With an increase in the distance from 50 m to 200 m, the main vibration frequencies decreased to less than 5 Hz. With increasing joint degree, the attenuation rate of the vibration velocity and energy attenuation of the blasting vibration increase, indicating that the structural parameters of the rock mass (such as the number of joints) have a significant impact on the attenuation law of blasting vibration. Furthermore, a modified equation that can be used for predicting PPV was developed by considering the effect of the number of joints in the rock mass on the blasting vibration. For the same ground vibration readings, the correlation factor increased from 0.8 to 0.85 for the Nicholls-USBM equation and the modified equation, respectively. The PPV of blasting under different rock masses of the Baideng open-pit phosphorite mine was used to verify the modified equation. The results show that a modified equation can be used for predicting the PPV of blasting engineering in the Baideng phosphorite mine and that the prediction accuracy is acceptable.

A series of high and steep slopes have been formed due to the deep exploitation of resources in open-pit mines across China. The stability of these high and steep slopes has become an essential factor affecting the efficient, safe, and sustainable development of deep mineral resources. Due to numerous problems such as constant resistance fluctuation and pipe jamming of the original sliding force monitoring system, leading to system failure, a series of improvements on the current monitoring systems were implemented. This specific work included a mechanical characteristics test of the anchor cable, improvement of the constant resistance structure, and measurement of the internal displacement of the slope. The communication mode and the software architecture of the system were also adjusted. This work significantly improved the overall performance of the sliding force monitoring and early warning system. The improvements performed in this research are systematically described to provide an example of good practice for other sites with similar features. The collected data show that the improved sliding force monitoring system can accurately reflect the whole process of landslide incubation. Moreover, the validity of the early warning criterion based on the sliding force is verified again using the field test.

Geohazards such as landslides, which are often accompanied by surface cracks, have caused great harm to public safety and property. If these surface cracks could be identified in time, this would be of great significance for the monitoring and early warning of geohazards. Currently, the most common method for crack identification is manual detection, which has low efficiency and accuracy. In this paper, a deep transfer learning approach is proposed to effectively and efficiently identify slope surface cracks for the sake of fast monitoring and early warning of geohazards, such as landslides. The essential idea is to employ transfer learning by training (a) a large sample dataset of concrete cracks and (b) a small sample dataset of soil and rock masses’ cracks. In the proposed approach, (1) pretrained crack identification models are constructed based on a large sample dataset of concrete cracks; (2) refined crack identification models are further constructed based on a small sample dataset of soil and rock masses’ cracks. The proposed approach could be applied to conduct UAV surveys on high and steep slopes to provide monitoring and early warning of landslides to ensure the safety of people and property.

Chernogosky open pit mine integrates truck-and-shovel system of mining with overburden rehandling to internal dump with a set of walking excavators for rehandling of overburden to mined-out area of the pit. It is possible to improve efficiency of stripping in the conditions of Chernogorsky OPM by reducing percentage of stripping with more expensive handling system. The relevant research and solutions to this effect are presented in this article. Comparative characterization of mining conditions and parameters of mining systems applied is given for open pit mines Chernogorsky, Turnui, Nazarovsky, Vostochno-Beisky and Izykh. The comparative analysis points at the need to account for difficulty of mining and process sites in comparison of equipment productivity. High concentration of mining machines, which is conditioned by narrow mining front and simultaneous operation of five faces, as well as blasting operation implemented every 1-2 days, are recognized as the main constraints of excavator capacity in mining with direct dumping in Chernogorsky open pit mine. The management and engineering solutions implemented in the mine and resulted in higher efficiency of draglines are described.

Uniform schedule maintenance of mining and haulage machines is one of the key conditions for increasing productive time of maintenance personnel and decreasing monthly average servicing time. Currently, Russian mines infringe regulated maintenance schedule aimed to improve output per shift. The loss of time of maintenance personnel and equipment as a consequence maintenance irregularity is never assessed. This article presents assessment results on maintenance schedule uniformity in terms of dump trucks BelAZ-7513 and BelAZ-7530 at Chernogorsky open pit mine, SUEK-Khakassia. A variant of calculation of time loss owing to inconsistent maintenance schedule for dump trucks is proposed. The loss of time by maintenance personnel and by mining/haulage machines is assessed. The fleet of dump trucks BelAZ-7513 and BelAZ-7530 is analyzed depending on overtime of operation between maintenance periods. It is recommended to improve uniformity of maintenance schedule for mining and haulage equipment.

Investigation of failures is one of the critical activities of mining and haulage equipment operability assurance in mining. Maintaining failure investigation at the required quality level, it is possible to identify provisions, rules and procedures that should be revised or changed, operation conditions that should be improved, additional personnel training, if required, etc. Investigation of failures in mines is under responsibility of machine men and electricians of maintenance and operation services. In reality, factory management and setup for production condition weak concernment of these workers in quality investigation aimed at finding of sources of equipment failures. This article describes real-life results achieved in development and use of maintenance service operation, technology and management monitoring. The requirements are substantiated for quality improvement in failure cause finding and removal in mining and haulage equipment at Chernogorsky open pit mine, SUEK-Khakassia. Causes of the present quality of failure investigation by machine men of Chernogorsky Repair and Engineering Works and Chernogorsky open pit mine are revealed. The proposed recommended practices will improve quality of mining and haulage equipment failure investigation.
