A robust filtered sliding mode control (SMC) approach is presented for vibration control of wind-excited highrise building structures. Rather than using a Lyapunov-function based control design, an alternative way is provided to find the control force based on the equivalent control force principle to obtain the control force. A low pass filter is properly selected to remove the high-frequency components of the control force while retaining the structural stability. The performance of the proposed filtered SMC is evaluated by application to a wind-excited 76-story building benchmark problem equipped with an active tuned mass damper (ATMD) on the roof. Due to the elimination of high-frequency part of the control force, the structure, sensors, actuators, and dampers are all less excited, and consequently their response is reduced compared with the unfiltered SMC approach. In addition, the required control forces are reduced which means a reduction in the size of actuators, thus making their implementation more practical. It is shown the proposed method is more robust to structural stiffness uncertainties compared with the linear quadratic Gaussian (LQG) algorithm and another implementation of SMC.

Tall buildings have become increasingly one-of-a-kind signature structures that are often irregular in plan and elevation with complicated dynamic behavior. Vibration control of irregular highrise building structures using a recently developed tuned mass dampers (TMD), the bidirectional TMD (BTMD), is investigated. A key issue for effective implementation of a TMD is the determination of their tuning parameters. Eight different sets of equations for tuning the parameters of TMDs are investigated using a 5-story building with plan and elevation irregularity, and a 15-story and a 20-story building with plan irregularity subjected to seismic loading. Appropriate equations are recommended for building structures with a fundamental period of vibrations of greater than one second.

Abstract Retrofit and structural design with vibration control devices have been proven repeatedly to be feasible seismic hazard mitigation approach. To control the structural response; supplemental energy dissipation devices have been most commonly used for energy absorption. The passive control system has been successfully incorporated in mid to high rise buildings as an appropriate energy absorbing system to suppress seismic and wind-induced excitation. The considerable theses that are highlighted include vibration control devices, the dynamic behavior of devices; energy dissipation mechanism, devices installation approach and building guidelines for structural analysis and design employing vibration control devices also, design concern that is specific to building with vibration control devices. The following four types of supplemental damping devices have been investigated in this review: metallic devices, friction devices, viscous fluid devices, and viscoelastic devices. Although numerous devices installation techniques available, more precisely, devices installation approaches have been reviewed in this paper, including Analysis and Redesign approach (Lavan A/R), standard placement approach, simplified sequential search algorithm, and Takewaki approach.
