To predict the behaviour of biological wastewater treatment plants, the Activated Sludge Model No. 1 is often used. For the application of this model kinetic parameters and wastewater composition must be known. A simple method to estimate kinetic parameters of heterotrophic biomass and COD wastewater fractions is presented. With three different types of batch-tests these parameters and fractions can be determined by measuring oxygen respiration. Our measurements showed that the maximum specific growth rate µmax of heterotrophic biomass depends on temperature, reactor configuration and SRT. In typical wastewater treatment plants of Switzerland the amount of readily biodegradable substrate was generally small (about 9 % of the COD in primary effluent). The same method can also be used to determine kinetic parameters of nitrifying biomass.

Laser interferometry is a well-established technique for the characterization of piezoelectric actuators. In this work, by using a low cost Michelson interferometer, the measurement of the calibration factor and the displacement amplification of a novel piezoelectric flextensional actuator (PFA), designed by using the topology optimization method, is performed. A simple method, based on small phase modulation depth when the PFA is driven by a triangular waveform, allows the absolute interferometer calibration. The free-displacement of the PFA for various drive voltages is measured and the displacement amplification is determined. The linearity and frequencyresponse of the PFA are evaluated up to 20 kHz

Abstract The need for compactness and efficiency of processing devices has kept increasing rapidly over the past few years. This need for compactness has driven the dice to be stacked one above the other. But with this come the difficulty of heat dissipation and its characterization because there are multiple heat sources and a single effective heat-conductive path. Hence, it becomes important to know the distribution and characterization of heat and temperature to provide effective cooling systems. In this article, we discuss the temperature distribution of various power configurations on stacked dice with five dice, when the dice are in staggered arrangement. The simulations have been carried out for both free convection and forced convection conditions using the ANSYS commercial software. The linear Superposition principle (LSP) is demonstrated on these configurations and validated with the results obtained from ANSYS simulation. LSP can be applied for the quick estimation of die temperatures with negligible error.

Knitted auxetic fabrics (AF) are in common practice but their stability and thickness are major problems in commercial applications. Therefore, a simple method of developing woven AF is proposed here. Differential shrinking property of different weaves is utilized to visualize auxetic honey comb geometry in fabric structure. Based on this fabric structure, auxeticity is induced in 2-D-woven fabric. AF is developed using conventional nonauxetic materials (i.e., cotton in warp and elastane [Lycra] yarn in the weft). Auxetic nature and auxetic structure in the fabric were characterized by microscope. Comfort properties (air permeability, thermal resistance, stiffness, and wicking) of AF were compared with conventional nonauxetic fabrics (NAF). Piezoresistive nature of conductive AF and NAF is also compared. AF showed superior comfort properties and higher sensitivity as compared to conventional NAF. Based on results, AF can be considered better replacement of conventional NAF in wearable and medical applications.

Abstract We have developed a rapid and simple method to diagnose the molecular defects of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency in Chinese in Taiwan. This method involves the selective amplification of a DNA fragment from human G6PD gene with specific oligonucleotide primers followed by digestion with restriction enzymes that recognize artificially created or naturally occurring restriction sites. Ninety- four Chinese males with G6PD deficiency were studied. The results show that 50% (47 of 94) were G to T mutation at nucleotide (nt) 1376, 21.3% (20 of 94) were G to A mutation at nt 1388, 7.4% (7 of 94) were A to G mutation at nt 493, 7.4% (7 of 94) were A to G mutation at nt 95, 4.2% (4 of 94) were C to T mutation at nt 1024, 1.1% (1 of 94) was G to T mutation at nt 392, and 1.1% (1 of 94) was G to A mutation at nt 487. These results show that the former five mutations account for more than 90% of G6PD deficiency cases in Taiwan. Aside from showing that G to T change at nt 1376 is the most common mutation, our research indicates that nt 493 mutation is a frequent mutation among Chinese in Taiwan. We compared G6PD activity among different mutations, without discovering significant differences between them.
