Pests have been a constant threat to agriculture the world over. In the Fiji Islands where the major agricultural export commodity is raw sugar, the Sugarcane weevil borer is one such agricultural pest that poses a real threat to an already ailing industry. The Sugarcane weevil borer (Rhabdoscelus obscure) is a pest originally found in Papua New Guinea whose introduction into Fiji has resulted in crop damage particularly to the soft variety of sugarcane found in Fiji. This review highlights the emergence of the weevil borer and explains a possible control that could be implemented by the Fijian farmers. The current method of control in Fiji uses the split billet trap. While this method has been recognized as an economically viable method of controlling the spread of the weevil borer, it has not been completely effective in eradicating the pest. This paper highlights and puts forth recommendations on other methods which could be used by the sugarcane industry.

Abstract Body effect is the key characteristic of DRAM cell transistor. Conventional method uses a TEG structure for body effect measurement. But this measurement is not accurate, because TEG structure has only several transistors and it is located outside of the DRAM die. This paper suggests a viable method for measuring DRAM cell transistor body effect. It uses a memory test system for fast, massive, nondestructive measurement. Newly developed method can measure 100,000 DRAM cell body effects in two minute, without sample damage. The test gives one median value and 100,000 individual values of body effects. Median value of measured body effects is equal to the TEG body effect. An individual DRAM cell body effect has a correlation with the fin height.

Background: Ultraviolet B (UV-B) radiation is a promising and environmentally friendly technique, which in a low flow rate, can induce bioactive compound synthesis. This work aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of post-harvest UV-B treatment in order to improve carotenoid content in climacteric fruits like persimmon and guava fruits. Methods: The fruits were harvested at commercial maturity and placed into climatic chambers equipped with UV-B lamps. For control treatment, the UV-B lamps were covered by a benzophenone film, known to block the radiation. This radiation was applied during 48 hours and fruits were sampled at 25, 30 and 48 hours of each treatment. HPLC analysis was performed to separate and identify carotenoid compounds from fruit skin after a saponification process. Results: Fruit from 30 hours treatment began to present a carotenoid accumulation since the majority of analyzed compounds exhibited its synthesis stimulated from this time on. In persimmon skin, it was observed that the maximum content was reached after 48 hours of UV-B treatment. Conclusion: These results suggest that this post-harvest UV-B treatment can be an innovative and a viable method to induce beneficial effects on guava and mainly on persimmon fruit.

The preparation and characterization of [Cu(POP)(biq)][PF6] and [Cu(xantphos)(biq)][PF6] are reported (biq = 1,1′-biisoquinoline, POP = bis(2-(diphenylphosphanyl)phenyl)ether, and xantphos = (9,9-dimethyl-9H-xanthene-4,5-diyl)bis(diphenylphosphane). The single crystal structure of [Cu(POP)(biq)][PF6] 0.5Et2O was determined and compared to that in three salts of [Cu(POP)(bq)]+ in which bq = 2,2′-biquinoline. The P–C–P angle is 114.456(19)o in [Cu(POP)(biq)]+ compared to a range of 118.29(3)–119.60(3)o [Cu(POP)(bq)]+. There is a change from an intra-POP PPh2-phenyl/(C6H4)2O-arene π-stacking in [Cu(POP)(biq)]+ to a π-stacking contact between the POP and bq ligands in [Cu(POP)(bq)]+. In solution and at ambient temperatures, the [Cu(POP)(biq)][PF6]+ and [Cu(xantphos)(biq)]+ cations undergo several concurrent dynamic processes, as evidenced in their multinuclear NMR spectra. The photophysical and electrochemical behaviors of the heteroleptic copper (I) complexes were investigated, and the effects of changing from bq to biq are described. Short Cu···O distances within the [Cu(POP)(biq)]+ and [Cu(xantphos)(biq)]+ cations may contribute to their very low photoluminescent quantum yields.

Potable and good-quality drinking water availability is a serious global concern, since several pollution sources significantly contribute to low water quality. Amongst these pollution sources, several are releasing an array of hazardous agents into various environmental and water matrices. Unfortunately, there are not very many ecologically friendly systems available to treat the contaminated environment exclusively. Consequently, heavy metal water contamination leads to many diseases in humans, such as cardiopulmonary diseases and cytotoxicity, among others. To solve this problem, there are a plethora of emerging technologies that play an important role in defining treatment strategies. Phytoremediation, the usage of plants to remove contaminants, is a technology that has been widely used to remediate pollution in soils, with particular reference to toxic elements. Thus, hydroponic systems coupled with bioremediation for the removal of water contaminants have shown great relevance. In this review, we addressed several studies that support the development of phytoremediation systems in water. We cover the importance of applied science and environmental engineering to generate sustainable strategies to improve water quality. In this context, the phytoremediation capabilities of different plant species and possible obstacles that phytoremediation systems may encounter are discussed with suitable examples by comparing different mechanistic processes. According to the presented data, there are a wide range of plant species with water phytoremediation potential that need to be studied from a multidisciplinary perspective to make water phytoremediation a viable method.

Abstract Background Overutilization of antibiotics remains an issue in the inpatient setting. What is more, many protocols geared toward curbing improper antibiotic use rely heavily on resource- and personnel-intensive interventions. Thus, the potential for using the EMR to facilitate antibiotic stewardship remains largely unexplored. Methods We implemented a novel change for ordering certain antibiotics in our EMR: ceftriaxone, daptomycin, ertapenem, imipenem, meropenem, and piperacillin-tazobactam. When ordering one of these antibiotics, providers had to note a usage indication, which assigned a usage duration as per our Antibiotic Stewardship Committee guidelines. Pre-intervention, manual discontinuation was required if a provider did not enter a duration. The intervention was enacted August 2019 in 13 hospitals. Data was collected from January 2018 to February 2020. Antibiotic usage was reported monthly as rate per 1000-patient days. Monthly pre- and post-intervention rates were averaged, respectively. Paired samples t-tests were used to compare pre- and post-intervention rates per unit type per hospital. A p-value of less than 0.05 was considered significant. Units with minimal usage, as defined by a pre- or post-intervention mean of 0, were excluded from analysis. Example of Ordering an Antibiotic Prior to Intervention Example of Ordering an Antibiotic After Intervention Results Ertapenem was noted to have a statistically significant decrease in utilization in seven units at three hospitals. Piperacillin-tazobactam was found to have a decrease in utilization in 19 units at eight hospitals. Daptomycin was found to have a decrease in utilization in one unit. Significant decreases in the utilization of ceftriaxone, imipenem, and meropenem were not noted. Example of Statistically Significant Decreased Utilization in Piperacillin-Tazobactam on a Medical-Surglcal Unit Conclusion Our study showed a statistically significant decrease in use of ertapenem, piperacillin-tazobactam and daptomycin using a simple built-in EMR prompt that curtails provider error. This should allow for an increased ease of integration, as the protocol does not require a host of resources for maintenance. Of note is decreased utilization of piperacillin-tazobactam and ertapenem across multiple hospitals, most notably on the medical and surgical wards. Thus, usage of the EMR without personnel-intensive protocols is a viable method for augmenting antibiotic stewardship in health systems. Disclosures All Authors: No reported disclosures
