The aim of the study is to investigate and to prove that the fatigue failure of steel is initiated from the surface. Hence the preventif action of smoothening the surface that has been loaded by fatigue loading is very important. The specimen of AISI 1045 Steel is loaded by means of rotary bending fatigue. The fatigue loading will be interupted as the fatigue life reaching 50% of fatigue life and 75% of fatigue life. During the interuption the specimen will be grinded and polished, before tested completely until fatigue fracture occured. The fatigue life of each group of scpecimen based on the art of loading will be compared to the specimen tested by fatigue loading without interuption.The Miner rule is used to evaluated the test result. The influence of interuption and surface treatment is evaluated and analyzed. ABSTRAKTujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menyelidiki dan membuktikan bahwa kegagalan kelelahan baja dimulai dari permukaan. Oleh karena itu tindakan pencegahan dengan memperhalus permukaan sangat penting untuk mencegah beban kelelahan baja. Spesimen dari AISI 1045 Steel dimuat dengan cara uji kelelahan lentur putar. Kelelahan pemuatan akan disela sebagai umur kelelahan mencapai 50% dari umur kelelahan dan 75% dari umur kelelahan. Selama gangguan lainnya yang spesimen akan digiling dan dipoles, sebelum diuji benar-benar sampai patah akibat kelelahan yang terjadi. Umur kelelahan dari setiap kelompok specimen diuji berdasarkan beban akan dibandingkan dengan spesimen oleh kelelahan bongkar tanpa aturan. The Miner rule digunakan untuk mengevaluasi hasil tes. Pengaruh gangguan lainnya dan perlakuan permukaan dievaluasi dan dianalisis.

Some mechanical properties of AISI 1045 borided steels were estimated in the present work. The boriding process was carried out by the powder pack method at 950°C with 8 h of treatment. The fatigue strength on borided notched specimens was evaluated with rotating bending tests (R=1) considering a stress concentration factor (Kt) of 2.53. Likewise, the presence of residual stresses in boride layers was established by the XRD technique. The Daimler-Benz Rockwell C test was used, also, to estimate the strength adhesion of the coated system. The results show a decrease in the fatigue strength of AISI borided steels due to the presence of high porosity in the layers. Finally, the Rockwell-C adhesion test showed no coating failure for the boride layer.

Chromium plating is used widely in industry to enhance wear, abrasion resistance and to restore the dimensions of undersized parts. However, tensile residual stress always exists in chrome layer because of hydrogen embrittlement so it affect to mechanical properties of the chromium plating machine element, especially in fatigue strength. In this paper, effect of residual stress in chrome plating layer to fatigue strength was studied. The sample (AISI 1045 steel) was plated with 10 and 60 micrometers thicknesses and residual stress in chrome plating layer was determined by X-ray diffraction technique (Cu-Kα radiation). The results showed that chromium layer thicknesses go up, tensile residual stress decrease and microcrack density increase. Consequently, fatigue strength goes down when chromium layer thicknesses increase.

The objective of the present work is to simulate surface roughness in Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) machine by Fuzzy Modeling of AISI 1045 Steel. To develop the fuzzy model; cutting depth, feed rate and speed are taken as input process parameters. The predicted results are compared with reliable set of experimental data for the validation of fuzzy model. Based upon reliable set of experimental data by Response Surface Methodology twenty fuzzy controlled rules using triangular membership function are constructed. By intelligent model based design and control of CNC process parameters, we can enhance the product quality, decrease the product cost and maintain the competitive position of steel.

AbstractQuench hardening aims at the microstructural transformation of steels in order to improve hardness and mechanical strength. The aim phase is, in most cases, the martensite. It is necessary to heat the material until it obtains its austenitization and quenching by immersion in a fluid. Currently, it is common to use watery polymeric solutions in this procedure. These fluids, which are the mixture of polymers in water, vary their thermal exchange capacity depending on the concentrations applied. The increase in concentration minimizes the removal of heat from the part, reducing the formation capacity of martensite, and developing a lower hardness and strong steel. In this work, microstructural characteristics and properties of AISI 1045 steel quenched in solutions based on polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) in 10, 15, 20, and 25% concentration were evaluated. The microstructural characterization quantified the percentage of the phases in each concentration, demonstrating a reduction of martensite as the concentrations were high. The investigation of the samples by x-ray diffraction confirmed the absence of austenite retained in the material. Furthermore, a microhardness scale between the core and the surface was constructed, in which a reduction gradient of the indices of this property towards the core of the sample was evidenced.

AbstractDemands on modern gearboxes are constantly increasing, for example to comply with lightweight design goals or new CO2 thresholds. Normally, to increase performance requires making gearboxes and powertrains more robust. However, this increases the weight of a standard gearbox. The two trends therefore seem contradictory. To satisfy both of these goals, gears in gearboxes can be shot-peened to introduce high compressive residual stresses and improve their bending fatigue strength. To determine a gear’s tooth root bending fatigue strength, experiments are conducted up to a defined number of load cycles in the high cycle fatigue range. However, investigations of shot-peened gears have revealed tooth root fracture damage initiated at non-metallic inclusions in and above the very high cycle fatigue range. This means that a further reduction in bending load carrying capacity has to be expected at higher load cycles, something which is not covered under current standard testing conditions. The question is whether there is a significant decrease in the bending load carrying capacity and, also, if pulsating tests conducted at higher load cycles—or even tests on the FZG back-to-back test rig—are necessary to determine a proper endurance fatigue limit for shot-peened gears. This paper examines these questions.
