Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) waste produced by chrome plating activities pollutes the surrounding environment and harms human health. However, information about the chromium (Cr) pollution characteristics of actual electroplating sites is still lacking. In this study, the concentration, leachability and speciation of Cr in soils from a typical chrome plating site were analyzed. Our results showed that this site was severely contaminated by Cr (7.2 to 7735.2 mg/kg) and Cr(VI) reached the mean concentration of 138.7 mg/kg. The spatial distribution of Cr(VI) was related to the plating processes. Chrome plating and sewage treatment areas could be considered as the hot spots of contaminated sites. The vertical distribution of Cr(VI) was mainly affected by soil properties, where the loam layer retained and reduced a large amount of Cr(VI) due to its high content of iron minerals and finer particle fractions. Additionally, the chemical extraction results showed that Cr was mainly in non-residual fractions and the existence of Cr(VI) led to a high leaching toxicity based on the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) results. Moreover, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results revealed the speciation of Cr in the long-term contaminated soils. A large amount of Cr(VI) was reduced into Cr(III) and mainly existed as Cr(OH)3 and Cr2O3. Furthermore, Cr(VI) tended to precipitate as CaCrO4 and persisted in soils. Therefore, it is necessary to find appropriate strategies to remediate these contaminated soils. Overall, these findings strengthen our understanding of Cr(VI) behaviors and lay a foundation for the future pollution investigation, ecological remediation and risk assessment of sites contaminated by electroplating.

During high rates of fire, the bore of the firearm barrel is exposed to high temperatures. This exposure induces structural changes in the barrel material, which is especially significant for the substrate of the galvanic chrome plating. The alloy steel grades used currently for firearm barrels, when exposed to heating above the ferrite stability limits, develop a phase transition with a discrete negative change in the material volume, which results in typical crazing in the bore. This effect is destructive to the galvanic chrome plating, leading to a loss of adhesion, which reduces the ballistic performance of the firearm, especially its muzzle velocity. This can be prevented by manufacturing barrels from steels having a limited range of phase transitions. The primary method for determining the presence of distinct volume changes in steel due to phase transition is dilatometry over a wide temperature range, which includes the interval within which the barrel bore is heated. This paper presents the dilatometry results for four steel grades, which included a steel grade currently used for firearm barrels, and an analysis of the effects of phase transition on the degradation of the barrel bore.

The hydraulic support column bears loading and makes reciprocating motion ceaselessly for extended periods, so its service life is far shorter than that of the overall hydraulic support. This paper offers a comparative study on the surface coating of hydraulic support columns with hard chrome plating and high-velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) thermal spraying refabricating to analyze the impact of different refabricating processes on the microstructure, hardness, corrosion resistance, and wear resistance of the coating (plating). The result shows that the structure of the HVOF coating is uniformly compact, and the HVOF WC10Co4Cr coating has better wear resistance, more than four times that of hard chrome plating. In the neutral salt spray test, the HVOF Ni60 coating shows rustiness at 720 h of the test, which suggests its corrosion resistance is nearly five times that of hard chrome plating. Hence, under the harsh corrosive wear environment, the refabricating HVOF Ni60 is a more suitable replacement for the hydraulic support column coating than the hard chrome plating. Thus, the HVOF Ni60 coating could be an effective replacement for hard chrome plating.

Introduction. In the process of chrome plating of car parts, there is a change in the composition of the chrome plating bath, which affects the stability of the ongoing processes – the performance and quality of the chrome coating. Therefore, it is necessary to constantly monitor the chrome plating bath for the presence of foreign elements that can be formed during the operation of the bath during the reaction of the solution with the anode or cathode.Materials and methods. During the research, the necessary equipment was used, which made it possible to determine with sufficient accuracy the content of trivalent chromium and its effect on the electrolysis process – the performance and quality of chrome coatings. A well-known technique was used to determine the quality and performance.Results. When conducting studies of the obtained cold self-regulating chromium plating electrolyte, it was found that trivalent chromium has a significant effect on the stability of the chromium plating bath. The content of which can vary within 2...25 g/l during operation. As a result, it was found that the optimal amount of trivalent chromium is its content in the chromium plating bath from 2 to 15 g/l. With a lower or higher content, the electrolysis performance and the quality of the chrome coating decrease. It was also found that in order to maintain the optimal amount of trivalent chromium and increase the time for stable operation of the chromium bath, it is necessary to observe the ratio of the area of the anode and cathode (the coated surface of the part), the value of which is within 3...4.Discussion and conclusion. As a result of the conducted research, it will make it possible, under certain conditions, to carry out the process of chromium deposition from a cold self-regulating electrolyte, which will allow for stable chromium deposition at high productivity and the necessary quality of the coatings obtained. The main condition is to control and maintain the amount of trivalent chromium in the chromium plating electrolyte in the bath.

To confirm the change of muzzle velocity and the most suitable probability distribution model of the 155 mm K9 howitzer barrel with chrome plating and changed rifling. Using a statistical program, the muzzle velocity were plotted on a normal distribution, a 2-parameter and 3-parameter Weibull distribution on a probability paper. Also, statistical parameters were estimated and muzzle velocity fitness test and probability of K676 charge were plotted. In both the chrome-plated with standard rifling and changed rifling for K9 barrel, the 2-parameter and 3-parameter Weibull distribution were skewed to the left compared to the normal distribution. It was confirmed that the muzzle velocity of the K9 barrel with chromium-plated is suitable for the normal distribution and 3-parameter Weibull distribution model.

The article presents a study of the characteristics of experimental samples with a chrome coating: the straightness and ovality of the inner surface of the cylinder, as well as the hardness and thickness of the chrome coating. The chrome coating is obtained on a previously developed installation for applying chrome coating on the inner surfaces of hydraulic cylinders of hydraulic drives with hydrostatic guides. The measurement of the geometric characteristics of the internal surface of the samples was carried out, the values of deviations from roundness and deviations from straightness were obtained. A study of the chrome coating was carried out, for this we cut out sectors from the samples, carried out their sample preparation, measured the hardness and took pictures under a microscope, measured the hardness and thickness of the chrome coating. The obtained measurement results: deviation from roundness, deviation from straightness, coating hardness, coating thickness - correspond to the specified technical requirements, the proposed construction of the installation for applying chrome coating to the inner surfaces and the electrolyte composition, selected earlier, are applicable for chrome plating of the inner surfaces.

A large amount of packaging used mainly in the food industry is obtained by technologies that involve the use of machines such as those that cut with flexible die. The durability of the flexible die is a very important aspect and in this regard the purpose of the research was to identify technologies for its development. Thus, the research considered the analysis of the durability of the knives made of 50CrMo4 steel considering hard chrome-plating treatment, as well as laser hardening of the knives. For the analysis of the durability of the tools, two technological parameters were considered, namely the moment of the tightening force, which had values in the range of 50 Nm–110 Nm, and the die cutting speed, which was adjusted to values in the range of 50–60 m/min. For the analysis of the durability of the flexible die, the wear of the tools was taken into account, as well as the maximum length of the die cut material.
