Rheological behavior of semi-solid metals during isothermal compression is the most basic forming way for semi-solid die forging. In this paper, based on the metal plastic deformation and high pressure solidification theory, the shear deformation mechanisms of semi-solid metals were analyzed during isothermal compression. Experimental observations and theoretical analyses for AZ91D and composite Al/Al2O3 in the semi-solid state were performed with thermal simulation tests. The results for theoretical analyses and experimental observations show that the shear deformation of semi-solid metals has been realized by metal inhomogeneous flowing from macroscopic view and by grain boundary inhomogeneous migrating from microscopic view respectively during compression.

In this review the investigations of deformation process development are discussed which were carried out by tension and creep in the temperature range Т<0.4Tm (here Тm is the absolute melting point of material) for nanostructured metals produced by the methods of severe plastic deformation. The contribution of grain boundary sliding to the total deformation in the above temperature interval is also considered. An analysis is made of the effect of grain size and grain boundary state on the evolution of grain boundary sliding and cooperative grain boundary sliding in nanostructured metals.

An aged Al-5Zn-1.6Mg alloy with fine η' precipitates was grain refined to ~100 nm grain size by severe plastic deformation (SPD). Microstructure evolution during SPD and mechanical behaviour after SPD of the alloy were characterized by electron microscopy and tensile, compression as well as nanoindentation tests. The influence of η' precipitates on microstructure and mechanical properties of ultrafine grained Al-Zn-Mg alloy is discussed with respect to their effect on dislocation configurations and deformation mechanisms during processing of the alloy.

Recent models of grain-boundary diffusion are briefly reviewed. Models of diffusion along equilibrium boundaries of recrystallization origin in coarse-grained materials and along non-equilibrium boundaries in nanocrystalline materials obtained by gas condensation and compacting or by severe plastic deformation are considered separately.

AbstractThis paper summarises our recent cyclic nanoindentation experiment studies on a range of materials including single crystal and nanocrystalline copper, single crystal aluminium and bulk metallic glasses with different glass transition temperatures. The unloading and reloading processes of the nanoindentation curves have been analysed. The reverse plasticity will be discussed in the context of plastic deformation mechanisms involved. The effect of loading rates on the mechanical properties of materials upon cyclic loading will also be discussed.
