Seismic fault detection using machine learning techniques, in particular the convolution neural network (CNN), is becoming a widely accepted practice in the field of seismic interpretation. Machine learning algorithms are trained to mimic the capabilities of an experienced interpreter by recognizing patterns within seismic data and classifying them. Regardless of the method of seismic fault detection, interpretation or extraction of 3D fault representations from edge evidence or fault probability volumes is routine. Extracted fault representations are important to the understanding of the subsurface geology and are a critical input to upstream workflows including structural framework definition, static reservoir and petroleum system modeling, and well planning and de-risking activities. Efforts to automate the detection and extraction of geological features from seismic data have evolved in line with advances in computer algorithms, hardware, and machine learning techniques. We have developed an assisted fault interpretation workflow for seismic fault detection and extraction, demonstrated through a case study from the Groningen gas field of the Upper Permian, Dutch Rotliegend; a heavily faulted, subsalt gas field located onshore, NE Netherlands. Supervised using interpreter-led labeling, we apply a 2D multi-CNN to detect faults within a 3D pre-stack depth migrated seismic dataset. After prediction, we apply a geometric evaluation of predicted faults, using a principal component analysis (PCA) to produce geometric attribute representations (strike azimuth and planarity) of the fault prediction. Strike azimuth and planarity attributes are used to validate and automatically extract consistent 3D fault geometries, providing geological context to the interpreter and input to dependent workflows more efficiently.

A multidisciplinary team, composed of stratigraphers, petrophysicists, reservoir engineers, and geophysicists, studied a portion of Boonsville gas field in the Fort Worth Basin of North‐Central Texas to determine how modern geophysical, geological, and engineering techniques could be combined to understand the mechanisms by which fluvio‐deltaic depositional processes create reservoir compartmentalization in a low‐ to moderate‐accommodation basin. An extensive database involving well logs, cores, production, and pressure data from 200‐plus wells, [Formula: see text] [Formula: see text] of 3-D seismic data, vertical seismic profiles (VSPs), and checkshots was assembled to support this investigation. The reservoir system we studied was the Bend Conglomerate, a productive series of gas reservoirs composed of Middle Pennsylvanian fluvio‐deltaic clastics 900 to 1300 ft (275 to 400 m) thick in our project area. We were particularly interested in this reservoir system because evidence suggested that many of the sequences in this stratigraphic interval were deposited in low‐accommodation conditions (that is, in an environment where there was limited vertical space available for sediment accumulation), and our objective was to investigate how fluvio‐deltaic reservoirs were compartmentalized by low‐accommodation depositional processes. Using an extensive well log database (200 plus wells) and a core‐calibrated calculation of rock facies derived from these logs, we divided the Bend Conglomerate interval into ten genetic sequences, with each sequence being approximately 100 ft (30 m) thick. We then used local VSP and checkshot control to transform log‐measured depths of each sequence boundary to seismic two‐way time coordinates and identified narrow seismic data windows encompassing each sequence across the [Formula: see text] [Formula: see text] 3-D seismic grid. A series of seismic attributes was calculated in these carefully defined data windows to determine which attributes were reliable indicators of the presence of productive reservoir facies and which attributes could, therefore, reveal distinct reservoir compartments and potentially show where infield wells should be drilled to reach previously uncontacted gas reservoirs. Our best success was the seismic attribute correlations we found in the Upper and Lower Caddo sequences, at the top of the Bend Conglomerate. These sequences were deposited in a low‐accommodation setting, relative to other Boonsville sequences, and we found that reflection amplitude and instantaneous frequency, respectively, were reliable indicators of the areal distribution of reservoir facies in these low‐accommodation sequences.

Geologic hydrocarbon seepage is considered to be the dominant natural source of atmospheric methane in terrestrial and shallow‐water areas; in deep‐water areas, in contrast, hydrocarbon seepage is expected to have no atmospheric impact because the gas is typically consumed throughout the water column. Here, we present evidence for a sudden expulsion of a reservoir‐size quantity of methane from a deep‐water seep during the Pliocene, resulting from natural reservoir overpressure. Combining three-dimensional seismic data, borehole data and fluid‐flow modeling, we estimate that 18–27 of the 23–31 Tg of methane released at the seafloor could have reached the atmosphere over 39–241 days. This emission is ∼10% and ∼28% of present‐day, annual natural and petroleum‐industry methane emissions, respectively. While no such ultraseepage events have been documented in modern times and their frequency is unknown, seismic data suggest they were not rare in the past and may potentially occur at present in critically pressurized reservoirs. This neglected phenomenon can influence decadal changes in atmospheric methane.

The successful exploration for new reservoirs in mature areas, as well as the optimal development of existing fields, requires the integration of unconventional geological and geophysical techniques. In particular, the calibration of 3D seismic data to well log information is crucial to obtain a quantitative understanding of reservoir properties. The advent of new technology for prestack seismic data analysis and 3D visualisation has resulted in improved fluid and lithology predictions prior to expensive drilling. Increased reservoir resolution has been achieved by combining seismic inversion with AVO analysis to minimise exploration risk.In this paper we present an integrated and systematic approach to prospect evaluation in an oil/gas field. We will show how petrophysical analysis of well log data can be used as a feasibility tool to determine the fluid and lithology discrimination capabilities of AVO and inversion techniques. Then, a description of effective AVO and prestack inversion tools for reservoir property quantification will be discussed. Finally, the incorporation of the geological interpretation and the use of 3D visualisation will be presented as a key integration tool for the discovery of new plays.

The newly acquired 3,590 km2 Demeter 3D high resolution seismic survey covers most of the North West Shelf Venture (NWSV) area; a prolific hydrocarbon province with ultimate recoverable reserves of greater than 30 Tcf gas and 1.5 billion bbls of oil and natural gas liquids. The exploration and development of this area has evolved in parallel with the advent of new technologies, maturing into the present phase of revitalised development and exploration based on the Demeter 3D.The NWSV is entering a period of growing gas market demand and infrastructure expansion, combined with a more diverse and mature supply portfolio of offshore fields. A sequence of satellite fields will require optimised development over the next 5–10 years, with a large number of wells to be drilled.The NWSV area is acknowledged to be a complex seismic environment that, until recently, was imaged by a patchwork of eight vintage (1981–98) 3D seismic surveys, each acquired with different parameters. With most of the clearly defined structural highs drilled, exploration success in recent years has been modest. This is due primarily to severe seismic multiple contamination masking the more subtle and deeper exploration prospects. The poor quality and low resolution of vintage seismic data has also impeded reservoir characterisation and sub-surface modelling. These sub-surface uncertainties, together with the large planned expenditure associated with forthcoming development, justified the need for the Demeter leading edge 3D seismic acquisition and processing techniques to underpin field development planning and reserves evaluations.The objective of the Demeter 3D survey was to re-image the NWSV area with a single acquisition and processing sequence to reduce multiple contamination and improve imaging of intra-reservoir architecture. Single source (133 nominal fold), shallow solid streamer acquisition combined with five stages of demultiple and detailed velocity analysis are considered key components of Demeter.The final Demeter volumes were delivered early 2005 and already some benefits of the higher resolution data have been realised, exemplified in the following:Successful drilling of development wells on the Wanaea, Lambert and Hermes oil fields and identification of further opportunities on Wanaea-Cossack and Lambert- Hermes;Dramatic improvements in seismic data quality observed at the giant Perseus gas field helping define seven development well locations;Considerably improved definition of fluvial channel architecture in the south of the Goodwyn gas field allowing for improved well placement and understanding of reservoir distribution;Identification of new exploration prospects and reevaluation of the existing prospect portfolio. Although the Demeter data set has given significant bandwidth needed for this revitalised phase of exploration and development, there remain areas that still suffer from poor seismic imaging, providing challenges for the future application of new technologies.

Evaluation of direct hydrocarbon indicators through comparison of compressional‐ and shear‐wave seismic data: a case study of the Myrnam gas field, Alberta

The Relationship

Shear waves differ from compressional waves in that their velocity is not significantly affected by changes in the fluid content of a rock. Because of this relationship, a gas‐related compressional‐wave “bright spot” or direct hydrocarbon indicator will have no comparable shear‐wave anomaly. In contrast, a lithology‐related compressional‐wave anomaly will have a corresponding shear‐wave anomaly. Thus, it is possible to use shear‐wave seismic data to evaluate compressional‐wave direct hydrocarbon indicators. This case study presents data from Myrnam, Alberta which exhibit the relationship between compressional‐ and shear‐wave seismic data over a gas reservoir and a low‐velocity coal.
