Public transportation agencies in the US have broken down the management of their bridge assets into four parts: preservation, preventive maintenance, rehabilitation, or replacement. As these agencies continue their battle to update and rehabilitate their civil infrastructure, bundling multiple bridge construction projects into a single contract can save money, human resources and time. State and local public agencies (LPAs) are beginning to employ this concept, but since practices and methods for bridge bundling are not yet standardized, the Federal Highway Administration has pursued tools and techniques to help these agencies successfully apply bridge bundling. A successful bridge bundling program focuses on a specific group (or bundle) of bridges that are slated for any of the four management areas, and navigates all the bridges in the bundle through the process from conception to completion. This is accomplished in the shortest time possible, with the support of the proper funding options and/or partnerships, Bridge bundling has demonstrated its ability to serve as an efficient and effective approach for sustaining and upgrading bridge assets through use of both federal and non-Federal funds. Use of the tool has led to cost savings and accelerated project delivery, and bridge bundling has proven itself valuable in all four of the major tactics currently employed to manage bridges.

Background The differences regarding categorization of thyroid nodules among different guidelines may affect the diagnostic performances and agreement among observers. Purpose To compare the diagnostic performances and agreements between observers with various degree of experience when applying different guidelines for stratifying thyroid nodules using suspicious ultrasonography (US) features. Material and Methods This retrospective study included 370 thyroid nodules (≥10 mm). Four observers, grouped as experienced and inexperienced, evaluated the US features and made final assessments according to the Kim criteria, Thyroid Imaging Reporting and Data System (TIRADS) by Kwak et al., and the 2015 American Thyroid Association (ATA) guideline. Diagnostic performances and agreements among the two groups were compared. Results The Kim criteria shows higher specificity with significantly lower sensitivity when compared to TIRADS and the 2015 ATA guideline (all P < 0.001), regardless of the level of experience. The experienced group showed significantly higher specificity with the Kim criteria and the 2015 ATA guideline compared to the inexperienced group ( P < 0.001), and the inexperienced group showed significantly higher sensitivity using the Kim criteria ( P = 0.002). The experienced group showed significantly higher agreement than the inexperienced group when using TIRADS while higher agreement was seen when using the 2015 ATA guideline for the inexperienced group. Agreement was not significantly different for the Kim criteria according to observer experience. Conclusion The diagnostic performances and agreements show significant differences in risk stratification of thyroid nodules according to the three guidelines using suspicious US features and the level of experience of the observer.

To address changing climate patterns, cities in the US are expanding sustainable transportation options and implementing green infrastructure. Sustainable infrastructure projects help communities adapt, decrease CO2 emissions, promote community health, and provide economic benefits. These projects can also have unintended consequences, increasing gentrification and displacement of vulnerable communities through increased property values (i.e., green gentrification). The City of Madison maintains an extensive system of bike trails and continues to expand community access, with three projects recently completed or in development. We recommend that the City of Madison alter policy to use tax-increment financing or community land trusts as a preventative measure to mitigate green gentrification of nearby areas for all current and future bike path construction projects.

Expressway construction projects are one of the crucial infrastructure projects for a country. Hence, assessment of environmental and social implications prior to initiation of the expressway construction project is vital. Thus, the research aims to analyse effect of social and environmental factors on expressway construction in Sri Lanka. Initially a comprehensive literature review was done to discuss on expressway construction in Sri Lanka and environmental and social implications of expressway construction in global context. The study followed a qualitative approach. Hence, four expert interviews were carried out to explore more on the same context limiting to Sri Lanka. Experts were selected from only on-going expressway project in Sri Lanka, central expressway project. Moreover, collected data were analysed through manual content analysis. The study findings highlighted viaduct construction, land acquisition and rock blasting as the major activities relating to environmental implications of the expressway construction projects. Thus, rational, logical, scientific, and technical selection of the routes is the most effective and efficient mean in minimizing adverse impacts. Hence planning of these activities should be done with due care by authorities only after proper feasibility studies. Further, major factors affecting social implications of the expressway construction have been identified as settlement, livelihood, public infrastructure and health and safety. Hence, resettlement action plans need to be updated to comply with the identified requirements through environmental and social factors.
