Abstract. A study of the response of some ionospheric parameters and their relationship in predicting one another during the solar eclipse of 21 August 2017 is presented. Mid-latitude stations located along the eclipse path and with data availability on the GIRO database were selected. The percentage obscuration at these stations ranges between 63–100 %. The decrease in electron density during the eclipse is attributed to reduction in solar radiation and natural gas heating. The maximum magnitude of the eclipse coincided with hmF2 increase and with a lagged maximum decrease in NmF2 consistently at the stations investigated. The results revealed that the horizontal neutral wind flow is as a consequence of the changes in the thermospheric and diffusion processes. The unusual increase/decrease in the shape/thickness parameters during the eclipse period relative to the control days points to the perturbation caused by the solar eclipse. Need for IRI model to capture eclipse caused perturbation

There was an unusual increase in numbers of caribou (Rangifer tarandus granti) in the Central Arctic region of Alaska from 1981 to 1985. In fall and winter numbers were up to five times greater than at the onset of calving in June. Numbers appeared to double during the month of June each year, then remain relatively stable over the summer period with a further increase in the fall. Ingress of caribou from outside the region in fall was observed in all years and egress in the early spring is postulated. We conclude that a small resident herd inhabits the region year round with numbers increasing through ingress of caribou from the Western Arctic herd possibly beginning as early as June. Increases or decreases in the size of adjacent herds probably will affect the numbers of caribou occupying the Central Arctic region.

SUMMARYIn 2013, an unusual increase of paratyphoid fever cases in travellers returning from Cambodia was reported in Japan. From December 2012 to September 2013, 18 cases ofSalmonellaParatyphi A infection were identified. Microbiological analyses revealed that most isolates had the same clonal identity, although the epidemiological link between these cases remains unclear. It was inferred that the outbreak was caused by a common and persistent source in Cambodia that was likely to have continued during 2014. The information of surveillance and laboratory data from cases arising in travellers from countries with limited surveillance systems should be timely shared with the country of origin.

[(CH3)3PH]3[Sb2Cl9] experiences four phase transitions which were found by means of calorimetry, thermogravimetry and X-ray diffraction. The crystal structure was solved in the space group P63/mmc at 382 K (phase I), Pnam at 295 K (phase II) and Pna21 at 175 K (phase V). We observed an unusual increase in symmetry from the monoclinic to the orthorhombic form at the IV\rightarrowV transition. The parent hexagonal high-temperature phase I consists of highly disordered [(CH3)3PH]+ cations and [Sb2Cl9]3− anions with an octahedral environment of SbIII. The transition from phases I to II is associated with the ordering of [(CH3)3PH]+ cations. Moreover, the successive transformations from phases I to V are related to the change in the arrangement of Cl atoms in [Sb2Cl9]3− anions from the discrete `face-sharing bioctahedra' (phase I) to two corner-sharing square pyramids. A mechanism for the phase transitions is proposed. It is observed that weak C—H...Cl interactions are responsible for the structure arrangement in low-temperature phases.

Optic neuritis presents as an acute or subacute inflammatory episode. Objective: Describe the clinical-epidemiological characteristics in 7 cases with unilateral optic neuritis and evaluate the therapeutic results obtained. Material and method: A series of cases with a diagnosis of unilateral optic neuritis who attended the Neurophthalmology consultation at the Hermanos Ameijeiras Hospital in Havana, Cuba, from August 6 to November 16, 2018, from Havana and Matanzas, were studied. An unusual increase in the incidence of NO was recorded in the period analyzed. Results: An unusual increase in the incidence of unilateral optic neuritis was recorded. The average age was 33.5 years. All reported unilateral painless visual loss. Four patients reported general signs and symptoms suggestive of having suffered a respiratory disease of viral origin, between 7 and 15 days before optic neuritis. In the examination carried out, great impairment of visual acuity (≤0.05) and colors (0/21) was found. The centro-caecal scotoma was the most frequent campimetric defect. Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) in the affected eye showed increased neuroretinal thickness, decreased nerve fiber layer, and ganglion cell damage. Treatment was with intravenous methylprednisolone and B vitamins. Conclusions: An unusual increase in patients with unilateral optic neuritis was observed. The OCT revealed damage to the structures at the level of the retina and the optic nerve. The therapeutic effectiveness was conditioned by the time of evolution of the neuritis.

From January to September 2013, a marked increase in notifications of Salmonella Paratyphi A infections among travellers returning from Cambodia occurred in France. An investigation revealed 35 cases without a common source: 21 in France, five in Germany, three in the Netherlands, one in Norway, one in the United Kingdom, four in New-Zealand. Data suggest an ongoing event that should trigger further investigation. Travellers to Cambodia should observe preventive measures including good personal hygiene and food handling practices.
