In this paper, an alternative design is proposed based on a family of three-legged manipulators. Such manipulators have two actuators (one vertical and one horizontal) in each leg, unlike the standard UP̅S Stewart platform, which has one actuator in each leg. The arrangement of the two actuators is such a way that, to have vertical motion of the shake table only the Vertical Motion Actuators (VMA) are actuated and for longitudinal or lateral motion, the Horizontal Motion Actuators (HMA) alone are moved. Due to its inherent features such as simplified kinematics, control and distributed loading, a study is carried out to determine the performance of such three-legged manipulators as a shake table. Sinusoidal motion and white noise motions are given to the actuators and shown that the VMA forces have linear relationship with the platform forces. The translational stiffness and the torsional stiffness are studied separately for the manipulators. In the dynamic analysis, it is highlighted that the gravity load of the legs is borne by the Vertical actuators, irrespective of the motion being spatial or planar. Hence, this topology provides scope for lighter electromechanical actuation. The performance analysis of the 3 legged configuration is accomplished using simulation results, in comparison to a 7-UP̅S configuration of shake table. A prototype of the shake table is fabricated and tested with earthquake data of El Centro.

Four scaled one-storey single-bay steel plate shear wall (SPSW) specimens with unstiffened panels were tested to determine their behaviour under cyclic loadings. The shear walls had moment-resisting beam-to-column connections. Four different vertical loads, i.e., 300 kN, 600 kN, 900 kN, and 1200 kN, representing the gravity load of the upper storeys were applied at the top of the boundary columns through a force distribution beam. A horizontal cyclic load was then applied at the top of the specimens. The specimen behaviour, envelope curves, axial stress distribution of the infill steel plate, and shear capacity were analyzed. The axial stress distribution and envelope curves were compared with the values predicted using an analytical model available in the literature.

Old reinforced concrete buildings constructed around 1980’s in many developing countries have been designed against mainly gravity load. Beam-column joints in these buildings contain slightly or no shear reinforcement inside the panel zones due to the construction convenience, and are vulnerable to shear failure in beam-column joints under the action of earthquake loads, especially for the exterior beam-column joints. This experimental study aimed to investigate the seismic performance of five half-scale exterior beam-column joints simulating the joints in existing reinforced-concrete buildings with non-shear hoop details. The test results showed that the structural performances of the beam-column joints under earthquake including failure mode, load-drift ratio relationship, shear strain of the joints and energy dissipation are strongly affected by the amount of longitudinal reinforcing bars of beams.

In collapse-resistant design of a structure under accidental local action, it is important to understand the failure mechanism and alternative load paths. In this paper, a pseudo-static experimental method is proposed. Based on which, the collapse of frame structure was simulated with testing a 1/3 scale; 4-bay and 3-story plane reinforced concrete frame. In the experience, the middle column of the bottom floor was replaced by mechanical jacks to simulate its failure, and the simulated superstructure’s gravity load acted on the column of the top floor by adopting a servo-hydraulic actuator with force –controlled mode.
