Hinge joint damage is a typical form of damage occurring in simply supported slab bridges, which can present adverse effects on the overall force distribution of the structure. However, damage identification methods of hinge joint damage are still limited. In this study, a damage identification algorithm for simply supported hinged-slab bridges based on the modified hinge plate method (MHPM) and artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithms was proposed by considering the effect of hinge damage conditions on the lateral load distribution (LLD) of structures. Firstly, MHPM was proposed and demonstrated, which is based on a traditional hinge plate method by introducing relative displacement as a damage factor to simulate hinge joint damage. The effectiveness of MHPM was verified through comparison with the finite element method (FEM). Secondly, damage identification was treated as the inverse problem of calculating the LLD in damage conditions of simply supported slab bridges. Four ABC algorithms were chosen to solve the problem due to its simple structure, ease of implementation, and robustness. Comparisons of convergence speed and identification accuracy with genetic algorithm and particle swarm optimization were also conducted. Finally, hinged bridges composed of four and seven slabs were studied as numerical examples to account for the feasibility and correctness of the proposed method. The simulation results revealed that the proposed algorithm could identify the location and degree of damaged joints efficiently and precisely.

The propagation of scattering Lamb wave in plate was simulated using transient dynamic analysis in ANSYS. In order to extract the characteristic information of received signal for damage identification, the short time Fourier transform based on time-frequency analysis was utilized, and then the energy distribution and envelop of received signal were obtained. Based on the displacement contour of simulation and energy distribution, the propagation of scattering wave in plate with a through hole was examined. Also, a mathematic relationship between damage location and scattering signal was developed, with the help of wave propagation path through actuator, damage and sensor. A nonlinear optimization method was applied on the mathematic relationship to obtain the damage location. The damage identification method using scattering Lamb wave was therefore established.

In this paper, multibody dynamic modeling and flutter analysis of a flexible slender vehicle are investigated. The method is a comprehensive procedure based on the hybrid equations of motion in terms of quasi-coordinates. The equations consist of ordinary differential equations for the rigid body motions of the vehicle and partial differential equations for the elastic deformations of the flexible components of the vehicle. These equations are naturally nonlinear, but to avoid high nonlinearity of equations the elastic displacements are assumed to be small so that the equations of motion can be linearized. For the aeroelastic analysis a perturbation approach is used, by which the problem is divided into a nonlinear flight dynamics problem for quasi-rigid flight vehicle and a linear extended aeroelasticity problem for the elastic deformations and perturbations in the rigid body motions. In this manner, the trim values that are obtained from the first problem are used as an input to the second problem. The body of the vehicle is modeled with a uniform free–free beam and the aeroelastic forces are derived from the strip theory. The effect of some crucial geometric and physical parameters and the acting forces on the flutter speed and frequency of the vehicle are investigated.

Data-driven damage identification based on measurements of the structural health monitoring (SHM) system is a hot issue. In this study, based on the intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) decomposed by the empirical mode decomposition (EMD) method and the trend term fitting residual of measured data, a structural damage identification method based on Mahalanobis distance cumulant (MDC) was proposed. The damage feature vector is composed of the squared MDC values and is calculated by the segmentation data set. It makes the changes of monitoring points caused by damage accumulate as “amplification effect,” so as to obtain more damage information. The calculation method of the damage feature vector and the damage identification procedure were given. A mass-spring system with four mass points and four springs was used to simulate the damage cases. The results showed that the damage feature vector MDC can effectively identify the occurrence and location of the damage. The dynamic measurements of a prestress concrete continuous box-girder bridge were used for decomposing into IMFs and the trend term by the EMD method and the recursive algorithm autoregressive-moving average with the exogenous inputs (RARMX) method, which were used for fitting the trend term and to obtain the fitting residual. By using the first n-order IMFs and the fitting residual as the clusters for damage identification, the effectiveness of the method is also shown.
