The paper presents the results of creation and investigation of dependencies of notification sections and notification times from train speed at different methods of automatic level crossing safety installation control. The authors consider automatic level crossing safety installation systems with notification sections of fixed length and with the control based on approaching train characteristics. As a result, method of automatic level crossing safety installation control based on train characteristics simultaneously increases safety and decreases time of crossing closure for road transport.

The paper presents an analysis of the system of automatic level crossing. The proposed system belongs to a group of linear devices that ensure safe movement of motor vehicles at intersections of railway and car roads. In the paper, the computational tasks were carried out. On the basis of statistical data, the THR rate, which is characteristic for rail transport, was estimated. An example of modeling railway automation systems based on Markov processes is also presented.

The paper shows investigations of relationship between the length of approach sections of level crossing safety installation and braking distances of trains. It is established that the existing methods of calculating approach sections of automatic level crossing safety installation don’t guarantee, if necessary, a full stop of a train by braking before a crossing after it’s closure. The authors have formulated a condition when a train can be stopped before a closed crossing occupied by a motor vehicle. They have also carried out a verification of the existing automatic level crossing safety installation systems and established that such systems don’t comply the formulated condition, so the full stop of a train is not guaranteed. So, the authors have proposed measures on developing an algorithm of automatic level crossing safety installation operation for the control of automatic stop of a train before a crossing occupied by a motor vehicle. It is shown that the development of engineering is on a level sufficient for realization of this suggestions.

Indonesia has many Level Crossing (LC) all of which are still manual with poor performance. As a result, accidents often occur. This accident was caused by the guards who late lowered the doorstop, carelessness and impatience of road users. Erratic waiting times on LC cause delays and high queues and trigger road users to break through LC doors. In Jakarta, the LC manual causes significant disruption to road users; the delay is 158.46 seconds and the queue is 66.85 m as is the case in Malang, Pasuruan and Surakarta. Many countries have implemented Automatic Level Crossing (ALC) successfully, such as the United Kingdom, Japan and Australia. ALC not only reduces disruption to road users but also minimizes human error (especially for LC manual guards). The most suitable type of ALC for Indonesia is Crossing Barrier with Obstacle Detection (CBOD). This study proves that CBOD is able to reduce disruption to road users to delay to 125,393 seconds and queue to 60,778 m. On the other hand, to control the behavior of road users needs to be supported by the installation of traffic calming; noise band, traffic channel and countdown timer. Analysis of B / C Ratio in CBOD installations including traffic calming produces tilapia 1.24, which is feasible to apply.

In the paper safety analysis of interface between electronic type of automatic level crossing device (LC) and relay based device of automatic block system (AB) is conducted for the purpose of indentifying the influence of their joint work on traffic safety. The analysis encompasses all potential failure cases in communication between observed signal-safety devices of AB and LC. Based on the results of the analysis it has been proved that the observed interface meets the safety criteria for application in railway transport, because if any failure occurs the respective signal-safety devices will always shift to a higher level of traffic safety, which is why it is not compromised.

Barrier machines are a key component of automatic level crossing systems ensuring safety on railroad crossings. Their failure results not only in delayed railway transportation, but also puts human life at risk. To prevent faults in this critical safety element of automatic level crossing systems, it is recommended that fault and anomaly detection algorithms be implemented. Both algorithms are important in terms of safety (information on whether a barrier boom has been lifted/lowered as required) and predictive maintenance (information about the condition of the mechanical components). Here, the authors propose fault models for barrier machine fault and anomaly detection procedures based on current waveform observation. Several algorithms were applied and then assessed such as self-organising maps (SOM), autoencoder artificial neural network, local outlier factor (LOF) and isolation forest. The advantage of the proposed solution is there is no change of hardware, which is already homologated, and the use of the existing sensors (in a current measurement module). The methods under evaluation demonstrated acceptable rates of detection accuracy of the simulated faults, thereby enabling a practical application at the test stage.
