Cycloid reducers are gear trains which can be classified as planetary transmissions. These transmissions have a very wide range of uses in industry in transporters, robots, satellites, etc. This research presents a comparative analysis of three analytical methods for determining cycloid drive efficiency. The paper explores every mathematically formulated method and compares them to experimental results from literature. The presented methods for determining efficiency have a common property, in that they all determine losses due to friction on the bearing cam surface of the shaft, the rollers of the central gear and the output rollers. The calculation of efficiency values is done for standard power values. The methods differ primarily in the way they calculate losses. For each method of calculating efficiency there is an analysis of pros and cons. The paper concludes with suggestions as well as possible directions for further research.

A benchmark dedicated to RANS-informed analytical methods for the prediction of turbofan rotor–stator interaction broadband noise was organised within the framework of the European project TurboNoiseBB. The second part of this benchmark focuses on the impact of the acoustic models. Twelve different approaches implemented in seven different acoustic solvers are compared. Some of the methods resort to the acoustic analogy, while some use a direct approach bypassing the calculation of a source term. Due to differing application objectives, the studied methods vary in terms of complexity to represent the turbulence, to calculate the acoustic response of the stator and to model the boundary and flow conditions for the generation and propagation of the acoustic waves. This diversity of approaches constitutes the unique quality of this work. The overall agreement of the predicted sound power spectra is satisfactory. While the comparison between the models show significant deviations at low frequency, the power levels vary within an interval of ±3 dB at mid and high frequencies. The trends predicted by increasing the rotor speed are similar for almost all models. However, most predicted levels are some decibels lower than the experimental results. This comparison is not completely fair—particularly at low frequency—because of the presence of noise sources in the experimental results, which were not considered in the simulations.

In the present communication the author has related the experimental results that he has arrived at, and which tend to show that electric currents exist in the leaves and in the roots or spongioles ot plants. Becquerel and Wartmann have already proved that electric currents may be obtained in different parts of vegetables, but the object of the paper is to point out the connection of the currents in the above-named organs with the vital or organic changes which take place in them. In consequence of the secondary actions which occur at the electrodes some difficulty is experienced in ascertaining the true or normal result in the roots. Combining however the facts obtained by means of the galvanometer with analogical evidence, the author considers that they tend to establish the conclusion, that, during the changes which occur in the leaves and in the roots of plants, current electricity is manifested.

ABSTRACT This paper presents a new evaluation of the strength compliance of concretes produced in Brazil. It is based on experimental results of over twenty-seven thousand concrete samples from different parts of the country. Results show that a significant part of Brazilian concrete do not reach the characteristic strength (fck) specified in design, and the percentage of nonconforming samples tend to be higher than 5%. This study also reveals the concrete produced in the South and Midwest regions have less variability than the ones produced in the other regions of the country. These results emphasize the importance of a rigorous control in manufacturing and reception of concretes in order to reduce the nonconforming cases.

Determining the maximum and minimum void ratios of granular soils is very important because it can be correlated with engineering behaviors such as soil permeability. Empirical relationships can be used for determining the void ratio, but they have many limitations related to the shape and the size distribution of the grains. Analytical methods improve the empirical relationships. In this paper, we present enhancements to the model of Chang et al. by combining the model of Youd et al., as Chang–Youd models, to make it more convenient and also to extend its usage to be suitable for determining the maximum void ratio. The Chang–Youd models are verified with experimental tests performed by the authors. Compared with the experimental results in the literature, the Chang–Youd models are also effective but more convenient and practical.

This work presents a study of the traction, normal and stall forces in a two-sided planar actuator with orthogonal planar windings and a mover that comprises two cars magnetically coupled to each other through two pairs of permanent magnets (PMs). There is no ferromagnetic armature core because of the permanent magnets array in the mover and orthogonal traction forces can be generated in order to move both cars jointly in any direction on a plane. The stall force is the minimal force necessary to break up the magnetic coupling between the two cars. When one of the cars is subjected to an external force through the x- or y-axis, the cars can become out of alignment with respect to each other and the planar actuator cannot work properly. The behavior of the forces was modelled by numerical and analytical methods and experimental results were obtained from tests carried out on a prototype. The average sensitivity of the measured static propulsion planar force along either axis is 4.48 N/A. With a 20-mm displacement between the cars along the direction of the x-axis and no armature current, a magnetic stall force of 17.26 N is produced through the same axis in order to restore the alignment of the two cars
