Abstract This paper is devoted to study the existence and uniqueness of solutions of a one parameter family of nonlinear Riemann–Liouville fractional differential equations with mixed boundary value conditions. An exhaustive study of the sign of the related Green’s function is carried out. Under suitable assumptions on the asymptotic behavior of the nonlinear part of the equation at zero and at infinity, and by application of the fixed point theory of compact operators defined in suitable cones, it is proved that there exists at least one solution of the considered problem. Moreover, the method of lower and upper solutions is developed and the existence of solutions is deduced by a combination of both techniques. In particular cases, the Banach contraction principle is used to ensure the uniqueness of solutions.

We say that a pair of r.e. sets B and C split an r.e. set A if B ∩ C = ∅ and B ∪ C = A. Friedberg [F] was the first to study the degrees of splittings of r.e. sets. He showed that every nonrecursive r.e. set A has a splitting into nonrecursive sets. Generalizations and strengthenings of Friedberg's result were obtained by Sacks [Sa2], Owings [O], and Morley and Soare [MS].The question which motivated both [LR] and this paper is the determination of possible degrees of splittings of A. It is easy to see that if B and C split A, then both B and C are Turing reducible to A (written B ≤TA and C ≤TA). The Sacks splitting theorem [Sa2] is a result in this direction, as are results by Lachlan and Ladner on mitotic and nonmitotic sets. Call an r.e. set A mitotic if there is a splitting B and C of A such that both B and C have the same Turing degree as A; A is nonmitotic otherwise. Lachlan [Lac] showed that nonmitotic sets exist, and Ladner [Lad1], [Lad2] carried out an exhaustive study of the degrees of mitotic sets.The Sacks splitting theorem [Sa2] shows that if A is r.e. and nonrecursive, then there are r.e. sets B and C splitting A such that B <TA and C <TA. Since B is r.e. and nonrecursive, we can now split B and continue in this manner to produce infinitely many r.e. degrees below the degree of A which are degrees of sets forming part of a splitting of A. We say that an r.e. set A has the universal splitting property (USP) if for any r.e. set D ≤T A, there is a splitting B and C of A such that B and D are Turing equivalent (written B ≡TD).

The important role played by the Ecole Polytechnique in the resurgence of science in France after the French Revolution, and its progress ever since, has led to much historical work on its foundation and development. Some of these studies have brought historians to the school's archives; and there chaos has awaited them, for they found the main collections of documents sorted into containers which were nominally classified by calendar year but in fact could contain materials pertaining to various other times. In addition, very many other documents were stored without classification. Thus exhaustive study of the school's history has been difficult, not to say impossible.

ABSTRACTThe study of the genetic structure of different countries within Europe has provided significant insights into their demographic history and their actual stratification. Although France occupies a particular location at the end of the European peninsula and at the crossroads of migration routes, few population genetic studies have been conducted so far with genome-wide data. In this study, we analyzed SNP-chip genetic data from 2 184 individuals born in France who were enrolled in two independent population cohorts. Using FineStructure, six different genetic clusters of individuals were found that were very consistent between the two cohorts. These clusters match extremely well the geography and overlap with historical and linguistic divisions of France. By modeling the relationship between genetics and geography using EEMS software, we were able to detect gene flow barriers that are similar in the two cohorts and corresponds to major French rivers or mountains. Estimations of effective population sizes using IBDNe program also revealed very similar patterns in both cohorts with a rapid increase of effective population sizes over the last 150 generations similar to what was observed in other European countries. A marked bottleneck is also consistently seen in the two datasets starting in the fourteenth century when the Black Death raged in Europe. In conclusion, by performing the first exhaustive study of the genetic structure of France, we fill a gap in the genetic studies in Europe that would be useful to medical geneticists but also historians and archeologists.

The paper concerns the fundamental issues of the sustainable social progress. As follows from the argumentation, a realistic design of institutional changes in connection with resource and organizational changes needed for sustainable progress is called for to realize in the line of overall social system transformation. This approach presupposes an exhaustive study of interconnected transformations in the main societal fields as system processes considering the influence of relatively exogenous factors (technological, demographic and climate changes). In turn, it is advisable, taking in view current world challenges, to expose an idea of ​​universal sustainability, the property of which is inherent in all social practices, and not just mediating the relationship between society and its environment. The first result of study concludes in revealing the fundamentals of overall social system sustainability. The second result: the transition to sustainable transformation of society supposes the synergetic implementation of structure-forming system and policy-driven shifts.

Digital news publishers strive to balance revenue streams in their business models: as standard advertising declines, alternatives for sustaining digital journalism arise in the forms of sponsored content, user donations and payments—one-off purchases, subscriptions or memberships, public or private grants, electronic commerce, events and consulting. An exhaustive study found 2874 active online news publications in Spain, and it observed the adoption of such models in early 2021. Advertising remains the most popular source of income for digital news operations (85.8%) and most sites rely on just one or two revenue streams (74.5%). We compare the cases in our census by their origin (digital-native or non-native), geography (local/regional or national/global) and topic scope (generalist or specialized). We find that traditional, national and specialized online media have a broader and more innovative revenue mix than digital-native, regional or local and general-interest news outlets. The comprehensiveness of this pioneering study sheds light for the first time on the risk that the lack of diversification and innovation in funding sources may imperil the financial sustainability of some online news operations in Spain, mostly those with a smaller scope and no backing from a traditional business, according to the results we present here.

Abstract Photonic engineered materials have benefitted in recent years from exciting developments in computational electromagnetics and inverse-design tools. However, a commonly encountered issue is that highly performant and structurally complex functional materials found through inverse-design can lose significant performance upon being fabricated. This work introduces a method using deep learning (DL) to exhaustively analyze how structural issues affect the robustness of metasurface supercells, and we show how systems can be designed to guarantee significantly better performance. Moreover, we show that an exhaustive study of structural error is required to make strong guarantees about the performance of engineered materials. The introduction of DL into the inverse-design process makes this problem tractable, enabling optimization runtimes to be measurable in days rather than months and allowing designers to establish exhaustive metasurface robustness guarantees.
