Natural gas pipeline plays an important role in transporting natural gas over a long distance. Its performance and operating behavior are affected by many factors, such as ambient conditions, natural gas flow rate, operation and control of compressor pumping stations, etc. Better understanding of the performance and behavior of an integrated pipeline-compressor system used for gas transmission will be beneficial to both design and operation of natural gas pipelines. This paper introduces a novel steady-state thermodynamic performance simulation approach for natural gas pipelines based on fundamental thermodynamics with the inclusion of the coupling between a pipeline and compressor pumping stations. A pipeline resistance model, a compressor performance model characterized by an empirical compressor map and a pipeline control schedule for the operation of an integrated pipeline-compressor system are included in the simulation approach. The novel approach presented in this paper allows the analysis of the thermodynamic coupling between compressors and pipes and the off-design performance analysis of the integrated pipeline-compressor system. The introduced simulation approach has been applied to the performance simulation of a typical model pipeline driven by multiple centrifugal compressor pumping stations. It is assumed in the pipeline control schedule that the total pressure at the inlet of compressor stations is kept constant when pipeline operating condition changes. Such pipeline operating conditions include varying ambient temperature and varying natural gas volumetric flow rate. The performance behavior of the pipeline corresponding to the change of operating conditions has been successfully simulated. The introduced pipeline performance simulation approach is generic and can be applied to different pipeline-compressor systems.

Abstract The ThO2 fuel has higher thermal conductivity and melting boiling point than the UO2 fuel, which is beneficial to the fast removal of heat and the improvement of fuel melt margin. In this paper, the material properties and thermodynamic behaviors of thorium-based fuel were firstly reviewed. And then the thermal physical properties and the fuel behavior models of Th0.923U0.077O2 fuel and Th0.923Pu0.077O2 fuel have been implemented in fuel performance analysis code FRAPCON and FRAPTRAN. Finally, the performances of Th0.923U0.077O2 fuel, Th0.923Pu0.077O2 fuel and UO2 fuel under both normal operating conditions and transient conditions (RIA and LOCA) are analyzed and compared. The Th0.923U0.077O2 fuel is found to have lower fuel center-line temperature and the thorium-based fuels are observed to have a delayed pellet-cladding mechanical interaction (PCMI) under steady state. Furthermore, the fission gas release, cladding strain and internal fuel energy under transient conditions are found to be lower too. Lastly, the cladding displacement and temperature under transient conditions are also compared. The thorium-based fuel was found to have a higher safety margin and accident resistance than conventional UO2 fuel under both normal operating conditions and accident conditions.

Because an aircraft gas turbine operates under various flight conditions that change with altitude, flight velocity, and ambient temperature, the performance estimation that considers the flight conditions must be known before developing or operating the gas turbine. More so, for the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) where the engine is activated by an onboard engine controller in emergencies, the precise performance model including the estimated steady-state and transient performance data should be provided to the engine control system and the engine health monitoring system. In this study, a graphic user interface (GUI) type steady-state and transient performance simulation model of the PW206C turboshaft engine that was adopted for use in the Smart UAV was developed using SIMULINK for the performance analysis. For the simulation model, first the component maps including the compressor, gas generator turbine, and power turbine were inversely generated from the manufacturer’s limited performance deck data by the hybrid method. For the work and mass flow matching between components of the steady-state simulation, the state-flow library of SIMULINK was applied. The proposed steady-state performance model can simulate off-design point performance at various flight conditions and part loads, and in order to evaluate the steady-state performance model their simulation results were compared with the manufacturer’s performance deck data. According to comparison results, it was confirmed that the steady-state model agreed well with the deck data within 3% in all flight envelopes. In the transient performance simulation model, the continuity of mass flow (CMF) method was used, and the rotational speed change was calculated by integrating the excess torque due to the transient fuel flow change using the Runge–Kutta method. In this transient performance simulation, the turbine overshoot was predicted.

Steady-state and transient performance analysis programs for 200kw-class small turboshaft engine with free power turbine were developed. An existing turbojet engine was used for the gas generator of the developed turboshaft engine, and it was modified to satisfy performance requirements of this turboshaft engine. To verify the availability of steady-state performance program for this engine: the program was applied to the same type gas turbine test unit, and the analysis results were compared to experimental results. The developed transient performance analysis program using the CMF (Constant Mass flow) method was utilized to analysis in the cases of fuel step increase and the ramp increase.
