Whispering gallery resonators made out of lithium niobate allow for optical parametric oscillation and frequency comb generation employing the outstanding second-order nonlinear-optical properties of this material. An important knob to tune and control these processes is, e.g., the linear electro-optic effect, the Pockels effect via externally applied electric fields. Due to the shape of the resonators a precise prediction of the electric field strength that affects the optical mode is non-trivial. Here, we study the average strength of the electric field in z-direction in the region of the optical mode for different configurations and geometries of lithium niobate whispering gallery resonators with the help of the finite element method. We find that in some configurations almost 100% is present in the cavity compared to the ideal case of a cylindrical resonator. Even in the case of a few-mode resonator with a very thin rim we find a strength of 90%. Our results give useful design considerations for future arrangements that may benefit from the strong electro-optic effect in bulk whispering gallery resonators made out of lithium niobate.

AbstractThis work outlined the fast speed response and high modulation bandwidth through LiNbO3 electro-optic modulators. The refractive index is analyzed to estimate the switching voltage and modulation bandwidth for these modulators. The modulation voltage and data transmission data rates are analyzed and discussed clearly through LiNbO3 electro-optic modulators. The modulator’s performance efficiency is upgraded with the optimum modulator length of 10 mm and its thickness of 2 mm. The proposed modulators are compared with GaAs electrooptic modulators under various electro-optic modulators dimensions at 1300 nm near-infrared region and room temperature.

Terahertz quantum cascade laser sources based on intra-cavity difference frequency generation from mid-IR devices are an important asset for applications in rotational molecular spectroscopy and sensing, being the only electrically pumped device able to operate in the 0.6–6 THz range without the need of bulky and expensive liquid helium cooling. Here we present comb operation obtained by intra-cavity mixing of a distributed feedback laser at λ = 6.5 μm and a Fabry–Pérot device at around λ = 6.9 μm. The resulting ultra-broadband THz emission extends from 1.8 to 3.3 THz, with a total output power of 8 μW at 78 K. The THz emission has been characterized by multi-heterodyne detection with a primary frequency standard referenced THz comb, obtained by optical rectification of near infrared pulses. The down-converted beatnotes, simultaneously acquired, confirm an equally spaced THz emission down to 1 MHz accuracy. In the future, this setup can be used for Fourier transform based evaluation of the phase relation among the emitted THz modes, paving the way to room-temperature, compact, and field-deployable metrological grade THz frequency combs.

(100)-oriented PLZT ((Pb1-x, Lax) (Zry,Ti1-y)1-x/4O3, x/y=9/65) films of up to ~ 1.23 μm have been developed on LaAlO3single crystal substrate by magnetron sputtering. The as-grown PLZT thin films exhibit high optical transparency in visible and near-infrared light wavelength and high quadratic (Kerr) EO coefficients. Prism coupler measurements reveal that the PLZT thin films possess large refractive index, as high as 2.524 in TE model and 2.481 in TM model. The transparency of >70% in the range of λ= 500-1200 nm, the optic band gap of 3.42 eV and the quadratic electro-optic (EO) coefficient of 3.38 x 10-17(m/V)2have been measured in the films. Due to the large EO coefficient and the micrometric thickness, the as-developed PLZT films have great potential in developing longitudinal-or transverse-type EO devices in electric and optic field
