Purpose The purpose of this paper is to empirically test whether enforceability mediates the relationship between property rights and investment in housing, using data from land formalization project in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Design/methodology/approach The study was cross-sectional in design; data were collected from a sample of 210 households that benefited from the recent Addis Ababa city land and buildings formalization project. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to assess the goodness-of-fit of the latent structures underlying the constructs. Mediation was tested using the Baron and Kenny steps, combined with bootstrapping technique. Robustness of results was checked. Findings The results indicate statistically significant mediation effect of contract enforcement. However, the mediation is partial, there is still a substantial direct effect of security of property rights on investment. Practical implications Any initiative to land formalization projects needs to consider contract enforcement environment, as presence and size of property rights effects largely depend on whether those rights are properly enforced. Originality/value This is the first study that conceptualizes the mediating effect of contract enforcement on the relationship between property rights and investment from an African country perspective.

This exploratory qualitative case study investigates how graduate students in education experience, attribute, and combat academic boredom. Three areas of concern are addressed: (a) the contributing factors to boredom, (b) how attributional style (internal vs. external) relates to coping with boredom, and (c) the differences between combating class-related boredom and learning-related boredom. Results showed that the onset of boredom was mostly influenced by a lack of interest, lack of utility value, and autonomy frustration. This study extended the existing literature by discovering an interaction between students’ attributional style and their coping strategies for boredom during classroom instruction. Specifically, students who argued that the instructor should hold more responsibility for boredom in class tended to take avoidance coping as their primary strategy (e.g., doodling). By comparison, students who opted to approach the problem positively (e.g., taking notes) are prone to attribute internally. Attribution does not appear to have a mediating effect on the relationship between experience of boredom and coping strategies for learning-related boredom. Implications for graduate and adult education and findings in the context of recent theoretical frameworks are discussed.

We examined the relationships between dysfunctional attitudes, learned helplessness, and coping styles in a sample of 623 men with substance use disorders. We also explored the potential mediating effect of learned helplessness in the relationship between dysfunctional attitudes and coping styles. Participants completed the Dysfunctional Attitude Scale, Learned Helplessness Scale, and Coping Style Questionnaire. Results revealed that male drug abusers demonstrated dysfunctional attitudes and learned helplessness. In addition, dysfunctional attitudes and learned helplessness significantly predicted the coping styles of male drug abusers. However, although learned helplessness affected coping styles, it did not mediate the relationship between dysfunctional attitudes and coping styles. Practical and theoretical implications and limitations are discussed.

This paper describes the construction of a self-report checklist designed to examine experiences of stressful routine occupational events and life events, coping responses, and psychological distress among law enforcement officers. The checklist items were derived from existing scales and are designed to examine a cognitive phenomenological model of stress and coping and testing the goodness of fit hypothesis.

In order to explore the relationship between sport motivation sport mental fatigue, as well as the mediating effect of coping style, a sample of 523 active athletes were recruited to complete sport motivation questionnaire, sport mental fatigue questionnaire and coping inventory for competitive sports. The result indicated that sport motivation negatively predicted the sport mental fatigue. Coping style partially mediated the relationship between sport motivation and sport mental fatigue. The mediating effect accounted for 65% of total effect. Sport motivation and coping style explain the 35% variation of sport mental fatigue. The harm effect of sport mental fatigue on sport motivation could be reduced while the coping style could be improved.

ObjectiveTo explore the association between clinical leadership and quality of work life, as well as the mediating role of coping style in this relationship.SettingThree tertiary-level hospitals in Liaoning Province, China.ParticipantsA total of 1209 nurses were recruited for this study. Registered nurses who work full time with at least 1 year of work experience were eligible as subjects. Exclusion criteria were nurses who work indirectly with patients, such as in education, administration or research.Primary and secondary outcome measuresQuestionnaires consisting of the work-related Quality of Life Scale, the Nurse Leadership Scale and the Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire, as well as a demographic data sheet, were used to collect participant information. Pearson’s correlation analysis, hierarchical multiple regression analysis, and asymptotic and resampling strategies were used to analyse the data.ResultsThe mean overall quality of work life score among Chinese nurses was 3.50±0.60. After adjusting for demographic characteristics, clinical leadership was positively associated with the score of quality of work life (β=0.55, p<0.01). Clinical leadership explained 27% of the variance in quality of work life. Coping style partially mediated the relationship between clinical leadership and quality of work life. The proportion of mediation of active coping was 21.82% and of passive coping was 5.79%.ConclusionsClinical leadership was positively associated with quality of work life and coping style partially mediated the relationship between clinical leadership and quality of work life among nurses in China. Implementing measures focusing on both clinical leadership and coping style may provide success in improving the quality of work life of nurses.
