In underwater sensor network(UWSN) research, it is highly expensive to deploy a complete test bed involving complex network structure and data links to validate a network protocol or an algorithm. This practical challenge points to the need of a simulation environment which can reproduce the actual underwater scenario without the loss of generality. Since so many simulators are proposed for UWSN simulation, the selection of an appropriate tool based on the research requirement is very important in validation and interpretation of results. This paper provides an in-depth survey of different simulation tools available for UWSN simulation. We compared the features offered by each tool, pre-requirements, and provide the run time experiences of some of the open source tools. We conducted simulation of sample scenarios in some of the open source tools and compared the results. This survey helps a researcher to identify a simulation tool satisfying their specific research requirements.

The role of modelling and simulation in the systemic analysis of living systems is now clearly established. Emerging disciplines, such as systems biology, and worldwide research actions, such as the Physiome Project or the Virtual Physiological Human, are based on an intensive use of modelling and simulation methodologies and tools. One of the key aspects in this context is to perform an efficient integration of various models representing different biological or physiological functions, at different resolutions, spanning through different scales. This paper presents a multiformalism modelling and simulation environment (M2SL) that has been conceived to ease model integration. A given model is represented as a set of coupled and atomic model components that may be based on different mathematical formalisms with heterogeneous structural and dynamical properties. A co-simulation approach is used to solve these hybrid systems. The pioneering model of the overall regulation of the cardiovascular system proposed by Guyton and co-workers in 1972 has been implemented under M2SL and a pulsatile ventricular model based on a time-varying elastance has been integrated in a multi-resolution approach. Simulations reproducing physiological conditions and using different coupling methods show the benefits of the proposed environment.

With the continuous improvement in Computer Modelling and Simulation Environment (CMSE) applications being made, computer modelling and simulation (CMS) is proven a better alternative as opposed to conventional physical modelling. The advancement of computing hardware allows accurate results to be obtained faster, safer and at a fraction of its original cost. Despite the proven advantages, CMSE adoption among companies may be fairly new in Malaysia. This study is aimed at quantifying the demand of CMSE specialists in Malaysia as well as gaining insights in the companies’ requirements of specialists’ knowledge, competencies and skills. Thus, a survey, consisted of 3 main parts, was conducted among industries in Malaysia as a tool of measurement of the demand. The survey included questions related to the general information of the organization, specialists’ competencies relation to the job scope, and finally the professional and educational standards among specialists. In general, it was found that practically-competent specialists in CMSE are in high demand among engineering companies. Furthermore, professional courses through distance learning would be of high interest among companies to send their employees to gain practical competency in CMSE.
