The purpose of the study was to conduct a systematic analysis of the data available in the modern literature on the systemic (abscopal) effects in radiation therapy, which are mediated by immunological phenomena.Material and Methods.A structured search for articles published in peer-reviewed journals between January 2000 and February 2019 was conducted using MEDLINE database. The review included data from registered clinical trials at Clinicaltrials.gov, showing the results of the combined use of immunotherapy and radiation therapy.Results. There is an opinion that the systemic effect of radiotherapy is mediated by immunological phenomena. In connection with the recent data, there is a growing interest in the combined use of immunotherapy with radiation therapy in order to increase the efficacy of systemic therapy. However, the incidence of abscopal effects after standard radiation treatment is very low. In this regard, stereotactic ablative radiotherapy, due to its high immunogenic potential, low toxicity and short duration of the treatment, is apparently an attractive partner for immunotherapy in patients with metastatic disease.Conclusion. In view of the variety of the immunological effects of radiotherapy, further studies of the effect of radiation therapy on the immune system of cancer patients are needed, and the use of various combinations of immunotherapy and radiation therapy should be continued. All this, ultimately, will help improve the survival rates of cancer patients.

At presentation, isolated metastasis from oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma is rare. Liver is a relatively uncommon first site of failure, especially in the absence of other distant metastases, particularly without diagnosis of lung metastases. We report on a case of HPV-related oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma with synchronous liver metastasis treated with radiation therapy. This condition, defined as "oligometastatic state," describes a subset of patients with limited volume metastatic disease in whom favorable outcomes were reported with the use of local ablative therapies on both the primary tumor and metastatic sites. As a definitive treatment, we offered the patient, ineligible for other therapeutic approaches, exclusive radiation treatment on the head and neck region and a stereotactic ablative approach targeted to the liver metastasis.

Chordomas of the skull-base are typically slow-growing, notochord-derived tumors that most commonly originate along the clivus. Skull base chordoma is treated with surgery and radiotherapy. Local recurrence approaches 50% at 10 years. Radiologists play a critical role in diagnosis, treatment planning, and follow-up. Surgeons and radiation oncologists rely on radiologists for pre-operative delineation of tumor and adjacent anatomy, identification of post-treatment changes and disease recurrence, and radiation treatment effects. This review provides an overview of clinical characteristics, surgical anatomy, indications for radiotherapy, identification of treatment complications, and patterns of disease recurrence for radiologists to provide value in the management of these lesions.

The importance of radiation damage to the skin and its vasculature was recognized by the early radiologists. In more recent studies, vascular effects were shown to involve the endothelium as well as the surrounding connective tissue. Microvascular changes in the mouse pinna were studied in vivo and recorded photographically over a period of 12-18 months. Radiation treatment at 110 days of age was total body exposure to either 240 rad fission neutrons or 855 rad 60Co gamma rays. After in vivo observations in control and irradiated mice, animals were sacrificed for examination of changes in vascular fine structure. Vessels were selected from regions of specific interest that had been identified on photomicrographs. Prominent ultrastructural changes can be attributed to aging as well as to radiation treatment. Of principal concern were determinations of ultrastructural changes associated with venous dilatations, segmental arterial stenosis and tortuosities of both veins and arteries, effects that had been identified on the basis of light microscopic observations. Tortuosities and irregularly dilated vein segments were related to both aging and radiation changes but arterial stenosis was observed only in irradiated animals.

Germ cells from the rice stem borer Chilo suppresalis, were examined by light and electron microscopy. Damages to organelles within the germ cells were observed. The mitochondria, which provide the cell with metabolic energy, were seen to disintegrate within the germ cell. Lysosomes within the germ cell were also seen to disintegrate. The subsequent release of hydrolytic enzymesmay be responsible for the destruction of organelles within the germ cell. Insect spermatozoa were seen to lose the ability to move because of radiation treatment. Damage to the centrioles, one of which is in contact with the tail, may be involved in causing sperm immobility.
