AbstractPorphyry-type deposits are the world’s main source of copper and molybdenum and provide a large proportion of gold and other metals. However, the mechanism by which mineralising fluids are extracted from source magmas and transported upwards into the ore-forming environment is not clearly understood. Here we use field, micro-textural and geochemical techniques to investigate field relationships and samples from a circa 8 km deep cross-section through the archetypal Yerington porphyry district, Nevada. We identify an interconnected network of relatively low-temperature hydrothermal quartz that is connected to mineralised miarolitic cavities within aplite dykes. We propose that porphyry-deposit-forming fluids migrated from evolved, more water-rich internal regions of the underlying Luhr Hill granite via these aplite dykes which contained a permeable magmatic crystal mush of feldspar and quartz. The textures we describe provide petrographic evidence for the transport of fluids through crystal mush dykes. We suggest that this process should be considered in future models for the formation of porphyry- and similar-type deposits.

AbstractAmong the transition metal oxide catalysts, manganese oxides have great potential for formaldehyde (HCHO) oxidation at ambient temperature because of their high activity, nontoxicity, low cost, and polybasic morphologies. In this work, a MnO2-based catalyst (M-MnO2) with an interconnected network structure was successfully synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal method. The M-MnO2 catalyst was composed of the main catalytic agent, δ-MnO2 nanosheets, dispersed in a nonactive framework material of γ-MnOOH nanowires. The catalytic activity of M-MnO2 for HCHO oxidation at room temperature was much higher than that of the pure δ-MnO2 nanosheets. This is attributed to the special interconnected network structure. The special interconnected network structure has high dispersion and specific surface area, which can provide more surface active oxygen species and higher surface hydroxyl groups to realize rapid decomposition of HCHO.

Laser-induced etching of silicon is used to generate silicon nanocrystals. The pore structure depends on the substrate type and etching laser wavelength. Porous silicon (PS) samples prepared by Nd:YAG laser (1.16 eV) etching of n-type substrate showed a fairly uniform and highly interconnected network of nearly circular pores separated by thin columnar boundaries, while no circular pits were produced by argon- ion laser (2.41 eV) etching under similar conditions. The size and size distribution of the nanocrystals are investigated by Raman and photoluminescence spectroscopies and analyzed within the framework of quantum confinement models.

Thermally reduced graphene oxide (trGO) was successfully prepared and confirmed by XRD then dispersed in polystyrene (PS) and Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) polymers and evaluated for EMI shielding in microwave and infrared (IR) region. Thickness of prepared polymer/trGO composite films were 200-250 micron. It was observed that trGO has more compatibility with PS then ABS and dispersed more easily and uniformly in PS than ABS. This effect was also observed in IR shielding as ABS+15trGO have 3% transmission and PS+1% trGO have 1.5% transmission. Maximum 29 dB and 25 dB shielding effectiveness was measured by vector network analyzer (VNA) in microwave region (9-18 GHz) of PS+2% trGO and ABS+2% trGo composite respectively. These results clearly indicating that trGO is more compatible with PS than ABS and form more stable and mature interconnected network structure in PS at lower concentrations.

Brazilian historiography on modern architecture, replicated by international authors, confirms the importance and the pioneer stance of Gregori Ilitch Warchavchik (1896-1972)/Mina Klabin’s (1896-1969) 1927-1932 architecture in São Paulo, and the 1126 Bahia Street (Luiz da Silva Prado) house, 1930-1931, São Paulo, Brazil, is a remarkable example of their initial set of houses. Its design dialogues with other houses simultaneously designed by Adolf Loos (1870-1933), Le Corbusier (1887-1965), Juan O’Gorman (1905-1982), and the connections among all these modernist pieces and their authors suggest the informal existence of an interconnected network of creators, spread across continents. Likewise, they all put forward proselytizing strategies to amplify the repercussion of their works through exhibitions, publications, and debates. The generous internal spaces of this house on Bahia Street, the steady play of its geometrical composition, and its wise topographical and innovative landscape arrangements are well balanced, providing the authors’ aim of both making a manifesto and providing the site and the client’s necessities with an appropriate individual solution. The house has been used as a commercial space in recent decades, but it has been properly maintained and it is still in good shape.

Graphene-based aerogels with a three-dimensional interconnected network were fabricated via the hydrothermal self-assembly and thermal-annealing process. The aerogels were characterized by means of scanning electron microscopy and atomic absorption spectroscopy. The graphene-based aerogels showed highly porous structure and adsorption capacity for heavy metal ions. Thus, they would be the promising materials for removal of heavy metal ions from water.
