In the upgrade of wastewater treatment plants to include biological nutrient removal the space available is often a limiting facor. It may be difficult to use conventional suspended growth processes (i.e. activated sludge) owing to the relatively large surface area required for these processes. Recent years have therefore seen a revived interest in treatment technologies using various types of attached growth processes. The “new” attached growth processes, like the Biostyr process, utilise various kinds of manufactured media, e.g. polystyrene granules, which offer a high specific surface area, and are therefore very compact. The Biostyr plants allow a combination of nitrification-denitrification and filtration in one and the same unit. The results obtained are 8 mg total N/l and an SS content normally below 10 mg/l. The plants in Denmark which have been extended with a Biostyr unit have various levels of PLC control and on-line instrumentation.

Photocatalysis holds great promise as an efficient and sustainable oxidation technology for application in wastewater treatment. Rapid progress developing novel materials has propelled photocatalysis to the forefront of sustainable wastewater treatments. This review presents the latest progress on applications of photocatalytic wastewater treatment. Our focus is on strategies for improving performance. Challenges and outlooks in this promising field are also discussed. We hope this review will help researchers design low-cost and high-efficiency photocatalysts for water treatment.

Abstract A novel wastewater treatment and reuse system (WTRS) combining an anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) and an aerobic membrane bioreactor (MBR) with the design capacity of 115 L/d was developed for a terrestrial-based controlled ecological life support system (CELSS). Results clearly showed that the WTRS realized mineralization of organic compounds and reservation of nitrogenous nutrient, therefore converting the effluent into replenishment for the hydroponic system. Trace gas emission from the WTRS could meet requirements for the whole CELSS. Compared with physico-chemical processes, the specific consumables consumption of the WTRS was advantageous but its specific energy consumption is still in need of improvement. Results of microbial community analysis were consistent with the running state of the AnMBR and the MBR.
