The austenite/pearlite growth interface in a model alloy steel (Fe-1 lMn-0.8C nominal wt%) is being investigated. In this particular alloy pearlite nodules can be grown isothermally in austenite that remains stable at room temperature, thus facilitating examination of the transformation interfaces. This study presents preliminary results of thin foil TEM of the austenite/pearlite interface, as part of a programme of aimed at studying alloy carbide precipitation reactions at this interface which can result in significant strengthening of microalloyed low- and medium- carbon steels L Similar studies of interface structure, made on a partially decomposed high- Mn austenitic alloy, have been reported recently.The experimental alloys were made as 50 g argon arc melts using high purity materials and homogenised. Samples were hot- rolled, swaged and machined to 3mm diameter rod, solution treated at 1300 °C for 1 hr and WQ. Specimens were then solutionised between 1250 °C and 1000 °C and isothermally transformed between 610 °C and 550 °C for 10-18 hr and WQ.

In this alloy pearlite nodules can be grown isothermally in austenite that remains stable at room temperature thus facilitating examination of the transformation interfaces. This study presents preliminary results of thin foil TEM of the precipitation of VC at the austenite/ferrite interface, which reaction, termed interphase precipitation, occurs in a number of low- carbon HSLA and microalloyed medium- and high- carbon steels. Some observations of interphase precipitation in microalloyed low- and medium- carbon commercial steels are also reported for comparison as this reaction can be responsible for a significant increase in strength in a wide range of commercial steels.The experimental alloy was made as 50 g argon arc melts using high purity materials and homogenised. Samples were solution treated at 1300 °C for 1 hr and WQ. Specimens were then solutionised at 1300 °C for 15 min. and isothermally transformed at 620 °C for 10-18hrs. and WQ. Specimens of microalloyed commercial steels were studied in either as-rolled or as- forged conditions. Detailed procedures of thin foil preparation for TEM are given elsewhere.

AbstractThe effects of Nb addition on the recrystallization kinetics and the recrystallized grain size distribution after cold deformation were investigated by using Fe-30Ni and Fe-30Ni-0.044 wt pct Nb steel with comparable starting grain size distributions. The samples were deformed to 0.3 strain at room temperature followed by annealing at 950 °C to 850 °C for various times; the microstructural evolution and the grain size distribution of non- and fully recrystallized samples were characterized, along with the strain-induced precipitates (SIPs) and their size and volume fraction evolution. It was found that Nb addition has little effect on recrystallized grain size distribution, whereas Nb precipitation kinetics (SIP size and number density) affects the recrystallization Avrami exponent depending on the annealing temperature. Faster precipitation coarsening rates at high temperature (950 °C to 900 °C) led to slower recrystallization kinetics but no change on Avrami exponent, despite precipitation occurring before recrystallization. Whereas a slower precipitation coarsening rate at 850 °C gave fine-sized strain-induced precipitates that were effective in reducing the recrystallization Avrami exponent after 50 pct of recrystallization. Both solute drag and precipitation pinning effects have been added onto the JMAK model to account the effect of Nb content on recrystallization Avrami exponent for samples with large grain size distributions.

AbstractSeveral modern power production systems utilize supercritical CO2 (sCO2), which can contain O2 and H2O as impurities. These impurities may degrade the compatibility of structural alloys through accelerated oxidation. However, it remains unclear which of these impurities plays a bigger role in high-temperature reactions taking place in sCO2. In this study, various model and commercial Fe‐ and Ni‐based alloys were exposed in 300 bar sCO2 at 750 °C to low levels (50 ppm) of O2 and H2O for 1,000 h. 18O-enriched water was used to enable the identification of the oxygen source in the post-exposure characterization of the samples. However, oxygen from the water did not accumulate in the scale, which consisted of Cr2O3 in the cases where a protective oxide formed. A 2wt.% Ti addition to a Ni-22%Cr model alloy resulted in the formation of thicker oxides in sCO2, while a 1wt.% Al addition reduced the scale thickness. A synergistic effect of both Al and Ti additions resulted in an even thicker oxide than what was formed solely by Ti, similar to observations for Ni-based alloy 282.

The current work has investigated the texture development in an austenitic Ni-30Fe model alloy during deformation within the dynamic recrystallization (DRX) regime and after post-deformation annealing. Both the deformed matrix and DRX texture displayed the expected FCC shear components, the latter being dominated by the low Taylor factor grains, which was presumably caused by their lower consumption rate during DRX. The deformed matrix grains were largely characterized by organized, microband structures, while the DRX grains showed more random, complex subgrains/cell arrangements. The latter substructure type proved to be significantly less stable during post-deformation annealing. The recrystallization of the deformed matrix occurred through nucleation and growth of new grains fully replacing the deformed structure, as expected for the classical static recrystallization (SRX). Unlike the DRX grains, the SRX texture was essentially random. By contrast, a novel softening mechanism was revealed during annealing of the fully DRX microstructure. The initial post-dynamic softening stage involved rapid growth of the dynamically formed nuclei and migration of the mobile boundaries in line with the well-established metadynamic recrystallization (MDRX) mechanism, which weakened the starting DRX texture. However, in parallel, the sub-boundaries within the deformed DRX grains progressively disintegrated through dislocation climb and dislocation annihilation, which ultimately led to the formation of dislocation-free grains. Consequently, the weakened DRX texture largely remained preserved throughout the annealing process.

The current work investigates the microstructure evolution and softening processes that take place during annealing of an austenitic Ni-30Fe model alloy subjected to hot deformation in the dynamic recrystallization (DRX) regime. The substructure of the deformed matrix grains largely comprised organized microband arrays, though that of the DRX grains consisted of more random, complex subgrain/cell arrangements. This substructure disparity was also reflected by the distinct difference in the mechanism of post-deformation softening taking place during annealing of the deformed matrix and DRX grains. In the former, the recrystallization process took place through nucleation and growth of new grains fully replacing the deformed structure, as expected for the classical static recrystallization (SRX). The corresponding texture was essentially random, in contrast to that of the DRX grains dominated by low Taylor factor components. The microbands originally present within the deformed matrix grains displayed some tendency to disintegrate during annealing, nonetheless, they remained largely preserved even at prolonged holding times. During annealing of the fully DRX microstructure, a novel softening mechanism was revealed. The initial post-dynamic softening stage involved rapid growth of the dynamically formed nuclei and migration of the mobile boundaries in correspondence with the well-established metadynamic recrystallization (MDRX) mechanism.
