In this study, mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) were synthesised using the Stober method and functionalised with cysteine (MSN-Cys) for removal of Methylene Blue (MB) from aqueous solution using the batch method. The adsorbent nanoparticles were characterised by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), FTIR, BET, and TGA. Several influential factors on the adsorption of MB onto the surface of MSN-Cys particles were investigated, including pH, initial concentration, and contact time. The adsorption capacity of MB from aqueous solution increased from circa 70 mg/g MSN-Cys in acidic media to circa 140 mg/g MSN-Cys in basic media. Adsorption isotherms and kinetic models of adsorption were used to clarify the adsorption process. The measured adsorption isotherm was fitted with a Freundlich model for all solutions, and the kinetic model was determined to be pseudo-second-order.

The use of biochar in the horticulture and crop fields is a recent method to improve soil fertility due to its porous features and rich nutrients. In the present study, dairy manure (DM) was used as a biomass precursor in the preparation of highly porous biochar (DM-BC) produced at specific conditions. Based on N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations, the resulting biochar featured its microporous/mesoporous textures with a BET surface area of about 300 m2/g and total pore volume of 0.185 cm3/g, which could be a low-cost biosorbent for the effective removal of methylene blue (MB) from the aqueous solution. As observed by the energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), the primary inorganic nutrients on the surface of DM-BC included calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), potassium (K), phosphorus (P), silicon (Si), sulfur (S), sodium (Na) and aluminum (Al). Furthermore, the resulting biochar was investigated in duplicate for its biosorption performance of cationic compound (i.e., methylene blue, MB) from the aqueous solution with various initial MB concentrations and DM-BC dosages at 25 °C. The findings showed that the biosorption kinetic parameters fitted by the pseudo-second order rate model with high correlations were consistent with its porous features. These experimental results suggested that the porous DM-based biochar could be reused as a biosorbent, biofertilizer, or soil amendments due to the high porosity and the abundance in nutrient minerals.

In the present work, coal fly ash-derived mesoporous silica material (CFA-MS) has been successfully fabricated without employing any extra silica source. The obtained CFA-MS was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption–desorption measurement, powder X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Nitrogen adsorption–desorption measurement disclosed that CFA-MS possesses Brunauer–Emmett–Teller-specific surface area of 497 m2·g−1 and pore volume of 0.49 cm3·g−1, respectively. Furthermore, CFA-MS was evaluated for the adsorptive removal of methylene blue from aqueous solution. Several influence parameters on the removal of methylene blue including contact time, pH, initial concentration and temperature were studied in detail. Moreover, Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm models were employed for interpretation of the adsorption process, while the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetics equations were applied to investigate the adsorption kinetics. Results in the current work demonstrate that CFA-MS can be used as an efficient adsorbent for methylene blue removal.
