A TiN-based substrate with high reusability presented high-sensitivity refractive index measurements in a home-built surface plasmon resonance (SPR) heterodyne phase interrogation system. TiN layers with and without additional inclined-deposited TiN (i-TiN) layers on glass substrates reached high bulk charge carrier densities of 1.28 × 1022 and 1.91 × 1022 cm−3, respectively. The additional 1.4 nm i-TiN layer of the nanorod array presented a detection limit of 6.1 × 10−7 RIU and was higher than that of the 46 nm TiN layer at 1.2 × 10−6 RIU when measuring the refractive index of a glucose solution. Furthermore, the long-term durability of the TiN-based substrate demonstrated by multiple processing experiments presented a high potential for various practical sensing applications.

In this study, synthesis and characterization of chitosan/maghemite (Cs/Fe2O3) composites thin film has been described. Its properties were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis). FTIR confirmed the existence of Fe–O bond, C–N bond, C–C bond, C–O bond, O=C=O bond and O–H bond in Cs/Fe2O3 thin film. The surface morphology of the thin film indicated the relatively smooth and homogenous thin film, and also confirmed the interaction of Fe2O3 with the chitosan. Next, the UV-Vis result showed high absorbance value with an optical band gap of 4.013 eV. The incorporation of this Cs/Fe2O3 thin film with an optical-based method, i.e., surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy showed positive response where mercury ion (Hg2+) can be detected down to 0.01 ppm (49.9 nM). These results validate the potential of Cs/Fe2O3 thin film for optical sensing applications in Hg2+ detection.

Background: Gas sensors are very important in several fields like gas monitoring, safety and environmental applications. In this approach, a new gas sensing concept is investigated which combines the powerful adsorption probability of metal oxide conductive sensors (MOS) with an optical ellipsometric readout. This concept shows promising results to solve the problems of cross sensitivity of the MOS concept. Results: Undoped tin oxide (SnOx) and iron doped tin oxide (Fe:SnOx) thin add-on films were prepared by magnetron sputtering on the top of the actual surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensing gold layer. The films were tested for their sensitivity to several gas species in the surface plasmon resonance enhanced (SPREE) gas measurement. It was found that the undoped tin oxide (SnOx) shows higher sensitivities to propane (C3H8) then to carbon monoxide (CO). By using Fe:SnOx, this relation is inverted. This behavior was explained by a change of the amount of binding sites for CO in the layer due to this iron doping. For hydrogen (H2) no such relation was found but the sensing ability was identical for both layer materials. This observation was related to a different sensing mechanism for H2 which is driven by the diffusion into the layer instead of adsorption on the surface. Conclusion: The gas sensing selectivity can be enhanced by tuning the properties of the thin film overcoating. A relation of the binding sites in the doped and undoped SnOx films and the gas sensing abilities for CO and C3H8 was found. This could open the path for optimized gas sensing devices with different coated SPREE sensors.

Metal nanoparticles have potential utilities in biochemical sensing applications owing to their localized surface plasmon resonance characteristics. To facilitate the application of localized surface plasmon resonance sensors, a simple and effective interpretation of spectra responses of metal nanoparticles to analyte was developed in this paper. Based on a bilayer structure model and a trilayer structure model, a general relationship between the peak wavelength changes of extinction spectra and the thickness of the receptor layer as well as the analyte layer was established. Both analytical analysis and chloroform vapor test experiment demonstrate that the sensing performance is greatly dependent on the receptor thickness, and a thinner receptor layer will induce a greater sensitivity. These insights can be used as guidelines in fabricating highly sensitive localized surface plasmon resonance-based biochemical sensors.

A new waveguide-based surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor was proposed and investigated by numerical simulation. The sensor consists of a graphene cover layer, a gold (Au) thin film, and a silicon carbide (SiC) waveguide layer on a silicon dioxide/silicon (SiO2/Si) substrate. The large bandgap energy of SiC allows the sensor to operate in the visible and near-infrared wavelength ranges, which effectively reduces the light absorption in water to improve the sensitivity. The sensor was characterized by comparing the shift of the resonance wavelength peak with change of the refractive index (RI), which mimics the change of analyte concentration in the sensing medium. The study showed that in the RI range of 1.33~1.36, the sensitivity was improved when the graphene layers were increased. With 10 graphene layers, a sensitivity of 2810 nm/RIU (refractive index unit) was achieved, corresponding to a 39.1% improvement in sensitivity compared to the Au/SiC sensor without graphene. These results demonstrate that the graphene/Au/SiC waveguide SPR sensor has a promising use in portable biosensors for chemical and biological sensing applications, such as detection of water contaminations (RI = 1.33~1.34), hepatitis B virus (HBV), and glucose (RI = 1.34~1.35), and plasma and white blood cells (RI = 1.35~1.36) for human health and disease diagnosis.
