Considering the interaction of building-soil-tunnel, the grillage beams foundation frame building vertical crossed by Double-O-Tube (DOT) shield tunnel was simulated by 3D MIDAS/ GTS software, and the impact of construction on the building was analyzed. The results show that: the ground settlement trough caused by DOT shield tunnel can be fitted by peck formula; during the passage of the shield tunneling through the building, the settlement of the building increased and settlement trough was wilder; the settlement was stable and had a little rebound when shield machine already passed the building; with the increase of driving distance, the first principal stress P1 increased and then was stable; with the increase of L, the shape of foundation settlement curve changed, and the maximum differential settlement between columns increased but was small.

This paper investigates the influence of moving trajectories on ground loss ratio (GRL) due to the double-O-tube (DOT) tunnelling method. DOT tunnelling has three moving trajectories: pitching, yawing, and rolling, which have different behaviours during tunnel construction compared with those from single circular shield tunnelling. These moving trajectories cause overexcavation during tunnelling. The calculation method of gap area between the DOT shield machine and linings is evaluated in this research. Based on the superposition concept, the modification equation of GLR is proposed, which takes both moving trajectory and grouting volume into consideration. A field DOT tunnelling case is analysed to determine the correlation between moving trajectories and ground settlement. The influence of tail grouting is discussed by adjusting the grouting volume in different periods. The finite element method is also employed by setting the modified ground loss ratio (GLR′) as the contraction increment of linings. Results from both the measured and simulated settlements verify the reasonability of the proposed equation and the effect of moving trajectories on ground loss.

At first, this paper discusses the unfavorable environment where a tunnel is constructed by shield machine. As a novel solution, GPR is employed to detect some undesirable obstacles or geological conditions to ensure a smooth tunnel construction. After a brief introduction about the implementation of the detecting system, this paper raises the problem about the signal transferring between the antenna and the GPR body, and between the GPR and the control computer, which are far away arranged each other in two different cabins with relative rotating motion and under a very difficult connection condition. Two signal transferring methods, by cable or by wireless, and their advantage and limitations are discussed. This paper then proposes some key mechanical and electrical modifications on the central swivel joint or some other assemblies of the shield machine to meet the requirement for the signal transferring of the GPR. As this GPR system is supposed to be long-term online detecting equipment, this paper provides a dedicatedly designed power supply to replace the original DC power of the GPR.

Shield tunneling in karst areas poses significant challenges, as vibration caused by the shield machine can disturb the stability of the karst caves, ultimately resulting in the collapse of a tunnel. In the present study, a numerical model involving an iteration process was developed based on the Mindlin solution scheme to identify the optimal shield tunneling speed for minimizing the disturbance to karst cave stability. The developed model was then implemented to investigate an underground tunnel constructed in a karst region with different shield tunneling strategies. By using the variation in the energy density of a karst cave as a performance index, the model predicts that when approaching the affected zone of a karst carve (e.g., approximately 5 m from the carve), the shield tunneling machine should be controlled within a certain speed (i.e., < 30 mm/min). Once the shield tunneling machine moves into the affected zone of the cave, the speed of the machine needs to be decelerated to 11 mm/min, and the speed of 30 mm/min can be restored when the shield machine moves out of the affected zone. This finding demonstrates that the developed model could potentially be used to identify the optimal shield tunneling speed to minimize the disturbance to karst cave stability and ensure the safety of tunnel construction in karst regions.

The shield machine attitude (SMA) is the most important parameter in the process of tunnel construction. To prevent the shield machine from deviating from the design axis (DTA) of the tunnel, it is of great significance to accurately predict the dynamic characteristics of SMA. We establish eight SMA prediction models based on the data of five earth pressure balance (EPB) shield machines. The algorithms adopted in the models are four machine learning (ML) algorithms (KNN, SVR, RF, AdaBoost) and four deep learning (DL) algorithms (BPNN, CNN, LSTM, GRU). This paper obtains the hyperparameters of the models by utilizing grid search and K-fold cross-validation techniques and uses EVS and RMSE to verify and evaluate the prediction performances of the models. The prediction results reveal that the two best algorithms are the LSTM and GRU with EVS > 0.98 and RMSE < 1.5. Then, integrating ML algorithms and DL algorithms, we design a warning predictor for SMA. Through the historical 5-cycle data, the predictor can give a warning in advance if the SMA deviates significantly from DTA. This study indicates that AI technologies have considerable promise in the field of SMA dynamic prediction.
