Objectives. Determine the necessary conditions for obtaining a granulated η-Al2O3 carrier, investigate its structural and strength properties, and evaluate its activity for the model n-butane isomerization reaction.Methods. Samples containing bayerite structure aluminum trihydroxide were synthesized by precipitation from aqueous solutions of aluminum nitrate with ammonia under isothermal conditions at a constant pH value. The samples of the granulated carrier were obtained using an extrusion method when the composition of molding pastes was varied by tuning the ratio of bayerite- and η-Al2O3 -containing components and introducing polyvinyl alcohol.Results. The influence of the preparation conditions on the structural and strength properties of the active Al2O3 granules is evaluated. Samples of the aluminum oxide carrier were tested for a model reaction of low-temperature isomerization of n-butane, demonstrating a sufficiently high selectivity and reasonable prospects for use as catalysts for low-temperature isomerization of hydrocarbons.Conclusions. Increasing the content of the polyvinyl alcohol in the molding paste from 0.4 to 1.8 wt % is accompanied by an increase in the predominant sizes of the mesopores in the range of 10–50 nm and pores in the range of 50–80 nm, explaining the high values of all recorded parameters for the process of isomerization of n-butane.

With the research and development of high temperature superconducting technology, superconducting insulating materials under liquid helium and nitrogen temperature have been gradually taken seriously. Considering the unique operating environment, epoxy resin and PI face the challenge of low temperature. Electrical tree is one of the aging failure phenomena occurring in solid dielectrics. These imperfections could cause the field concentration with the application of high voltage, which results in partial discharges (PD). PD testing is an important quality check for the insulation of HTS cable. This chapter presents a study aimed at clarifying the influence of low temperature, pulse frequency and pulse duration on the electrical tree characteristics in epoxy resin, as well as PD characterization of PI film in LN2. The results show that the number of discharges and the discharge quantity in PI films increase with the increasing of the applied voltage and the defect size. The PD inception voltage decreases when the void defect diameter in PI enlarged and it is higher in LN2 than that at room temperature.

The esterification of oleic acid with alkyl alcohols in solv ent-free systems was catalyzed by an immobilized lipase from Candida sp . 99-125. The influence of several factors, including enzyme concentration, temperature, molar ratio between oleic acid and alkyl alcohols, and structure of alcohol was also investigated. The results indicated that the reactions catalyzed by lipase at 20 o C, in the presence of 3% (w/w) lipase, on the molar ratio of 1:1 between oleic acid and alcohols, afforded products in high yield. It showed high selectivity to primary and low selectivity to secondary alcohols and tertiary alcohols because of the sterically hindered effect. Methanol has certain toxicity on the activity of the lipase. The lipase from Candida sp. 99-125 was identified to be an effective catalyst in the esterification of alcohol and oleic acid at low temperature.
