The performance of mechanical products is closely related to their key feature errors. It is essential to predict the final assembly variation by assembly variation analysis to ensure product performance. Rigid–flexible hybrid construction is a common type of mechanical product. Existing methods of variation analysis in which rigid and flexible parts are calculated separately are difficult to meet the requirements of these complicated mechanical products. Another methodology is a result of linear superposition with rigid and flexible errors, which cannot reveal the quantitative relationship between product assembly variation and part manufacturing error. Therefore, a kind of complicated products’ assembly variation analysis method based on rigid–flexible vector loop is proposed in this article. First, shapes of part surfaces and sidelines are estimated according to different tolerance types. Probability density distributions of discrete feature points on the surface are calculated based on the tolerance field size with statistical methods. Second, flexible parts surface is discretized into a set of multi-segment vectors to build vector-loop model. Each vector can be orthogonally decomposed into the components representing position information and error size. Combining the multi-segment vector set of flexible part with traditional rigid part vector, a uniform vector-loop model is constructed to represent rigid and flexible complicated products. Probability density distributions of discrete feature points on part surface are regarded as inputs to calculate assembly variation values of products’ key features. Compared with the existing methods, this method applies to the assembly variation prediction of complicated products that consist of both rigid and flexible parts. Impact of each rigid and flexible part’s manufacturing error on product assembly variation can be determined, and it provides the foundation of parts tolerance optimization design. Finally, an assembly example of phased array antenna verifies effectiveness of the proposed method in this article.

Abstract Due to their superior weight to strength ratio of composites to common metallic structures, composite technology is widely used in aerospace industry. Assessment of damage in composites has gained interest after a large number of accidents caused by unanticipated damages in the composite structures. Many different structural health monitoring applications were developed over the years due to the fact that composite materials may inherit damage from within, not always visible from surface. The most common types of errors encountered in the industry are due to misaligned fibers, a mix-up in ply order, and delaminations: all presenting changes in the vibro-acoustical performance of the composite structure. This paper discusses the change in the dynamic properties of a composite structure contains a manufacturing error such as a ply lay-up error, and a ply angle error. Both plate and cylindrical structure types were considered for the stated error types. Effect of symmetric errors, unsymmetrical and unbalanced errors, and mid-plane errors were considered in the case of ply orientations, and dynamic stiffness matrix was used to identify the error. Identification of the structure’s layup properties and manufacturing error identification is employed. From the measured modal properties of the structure, a back-tracking strategy was used to generate the ply lay-up of the composite structure. Prepreg plates of a single carbon fiber system and filament wound hybrid cylinders consisting of glass and carbon fibers were manufactured for testing. Modal tests on plates and cylindrical composite structures were performed and compared with the analysis. A good match between the finite element model and experiment was shown in natural frequencies and mode shapes.

Electromagnetic railgun can perform precision strike in long range. It is obtained that the scatter of velocity must be exist because there are many effectors influencing launching process, for example, the manufacturing error, the initial value of launching parameters and uncertainty during launching process and so on. Among these factors, the parameters of armature are easy to adjust to ensure the consistence of velocity. So we attempt to apply Grey Analyzing Model to carry on the study, and then by means of the measurement of strain on the barrel to verify the model. The result shows that the reasonable matching of armature mass and diameter can be helpful to improve the consistence of armature muzzle with the other parameters the same. This method is a new attempt to study the stability and consistence of velocity of solid armature.
