Distributed Super Nested Arrays: Reduce the Mutual Coupling between Array Antennas

In array, mutual coupling between the antennas is inevitable, which has an adverse effect on the estimation of parameters. To reduce the mutual coupling between the antennas of distributed nested arrays, this paper proposes a new array called the distributed super nested arrays, which have the good characteristics of the distributed nested arrays and can reduce the mutual coupling between the antennas. Then, an improved multiscale estimating signal parameter via rotational invariance techniques (ESPRIT) algorithm is presented for the distributed super nested arrays to improve the accuracy of direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation. Next, we analyze the limitations of the spatial smoothing algorithm used by the distributed super nested arrays when there are multiple-source signals and the influence of the baseline length of distributed super nested arrays on the accuracy of DOA estimation. The simulation results show that the distributed super nested arrays can effectively reduce the mutual coupling between the array antennas, improve the DOA estimation performance, and significantly increase the number of detectable source signals.

DOA Estimation of LFM Signal Based on Krylov Subspace Method

Direction of arrival estimation (DOA) of LFM signal is an essential task in radar, sonar, acoustics and biomedical. In this paper, a short time Fourier transform multi-step knowledge aided iterative generalized minimum residual (STFT-MS-KAI-GMRES) approach is presented to amend the angle measurement of this signal. A three stage algorithm is proposed. First, the process is initiated with formulating an estimation algorithm for the carrier frequency and chirp rate, followed by calculation of STFT of the output of array element; this yields a spatial time-frequency distribution (STFD) matrix. Next, the Krylov subspace-based estimation algorithm is formulated in the presence of MS-KAI-ESPRIT algorithm. If the number of antennas increases, the accuracy of the algorithm will increase, but we will incur more communication costs. Results are presented showing attainment of the CRLB by STFT-MS-KAI-GMRES the for an adequately large signal to noise ratio (SNR). An important feature of the method presented in the current study is the low computational complexity that has higher suitability for practical applications.

Geometric Algebra-Based ESPRIT Algorithm for DOA Estimation

Direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation plays an important role in array signal processing, and the Estimating Signal Parameter via Rotational Invariance Techniques (ESPRIT) algorithm is one of the typical super resolution algorithms for direction finding in an electromagnetic vector-sensor (EMVS) array; however, existing ESPRIT algorithms treat the output of the EMVS array either as a “long vector”, which will inevitably lead to loss of the orthogonality of the signal components, or a quaternion matrix, which may result in some missing information. In this paper, we propose a novel ESPRIT algorithm based on Geometric Algebra (GA-ESPRIT) to estimate 2D-DOA with double parallel uniform linear arrays. The algorithm combines GA with the principle of ESPRIT, which models the multi-dimensional signals in a holistic way, and then the direction angles can be calculated by different GA matrix operations to keep the correlations among multiple components of the EMVS. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed GA-ESPRIT algorithm is robust to model errors and achieves less time complexity and smaller memory requirements.

Computationally Efficient Unitary ESPRIT Algorithm in Bistatic MIMO Radar

A low complexity unitary estimating signal parameter via rotational invariance techniques (ESPRIT) algorithm is presented for angle estimation in bistatic multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) radar. The devised algorithm only requires calculating two submatrices covariance matrix, which reduces the computation cost in comparison with subspace methods. Moreover, the signal subspace can be efficiently acquired by exploiting the NystrÖm method, which only needs O M N K 2 flops. Thus, the presented algorithm has an essentially diminished computational effort, especially useful when K ≪ M N , while it can achieve efficient angle estimation accuracy as well as the existing algorithms. Several theoretical analysis and simulation results are provided to demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed scheme.

Multiple RFI Sources Location Method Combining Two-Dimensional ESPRIT DOA Estimation and Particle Swarm Optimization for Spaceborne SAR

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems are susceptible to radio frequency interference (RFI). The existence of RFI will cause serious degradation of SAR image quality and a huge risk of target misjudgment, which makes the research on RFI suppression methods receive widespread attention. Since the location of the RFI source is one of the most vital information for achieving RFI spatial filtering, this paper presents a novel location method of multiple independent RFI sources based on direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation and the non-convex optimization algorithm. It deploys an L-shaped multi-channel array on the SAR system to receive echo signals, and utilizes the two-dimensional estimating signal parameter via rotational invariance techniques (2D-ESPRIT) algorithm to estimate the positional relationship between the RFI source and the SAR system, ultimately combines the DOA estimation results of multiple azimuth time to calculate the geographic location of RFI sources through the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. Results on simulation experiments prove the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Scalable ESPRIT Processor for Direction-of-Arrival Estimation of Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave Radar

The estimation of signal parameters via rotational invariance techniques (ESPRIT) is an algorithm that uses the shift-invariant properties of the array antenna to estimate the direction-of-arrival (DOA) of signals received in the array antenna. Since the ESPRIT algorithm requires high-complexity operations such as covariance matrix and eigenvalue decomposition, a hardware processor must be implemented such that the DOA is estimated in real time. Additionally, the ESPRIT processor should support a scalable number of antenna configuration for DOA estimation in various applications because the performance of ESPRIT depends on the number of antennas. Therefore, we propose an ESPRIT processor that supports two to eight scalable antenna configuration. In addition, since the proposed ESPRIT processor is based on multiple invariances (MI) algorithm, it can achieve a much better performance than the existing ESPRIT processor. The execution time is reduced by simplifying the Jacobi method, which has the most significant computational complexity for calculating eigenvalue decomposition (EVD) in ESPRIT. Moreover, the ESPRIT processor was designed using hardware description language (HDL), and an FPGA-based verification was performed. The proposed ESPRIT processor was implemented with 10,088 slice registers, 18,207 LUTs, and 80 DSPs, and the slice register, LUT, and DSP were reduced by up to 71.45%, 54.5%, and 68.38%, respectively, compared to the existing structure.
