Effect of cold rolling on the microstructure and mechanical properties of a Fe-23Mn-0.3C-1.5Al (in wt. %) TWIP steel with an initial grain size of 24 μm was studied. Extensive deformation twinning occurred upon reduction by rolling. The volume fraction of the deformation twins attained about 0.2 at a reduction of 20%. Then, the intensity of deformation twinning gradually decreased with increasing the total rolling reduction. The average twin thickness of about 20 nm remained unchanged, although the distance between twins progressively reduced with increasing strain. The deformation banding was observed after a reduction of 60%. The thickness and volume fraction of microshear bands increased with increasing rolling reduction. The cold rolling led to significant strengthening of the steel that is accompanied by a drop on ductility. The yield stress (YS) increased from 235 MPa in the initial state to 1400 MPa after cold rolling with a reduction of 80%, whereas the elongation to failure decreased from 96% to 4%, respectively.

The effects of cold-rolling with different reduction ratios of 70%-90% on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Ti50Zr30Nb10Ta10 alloy were investigated. It was found that the β-Ti phase in this alloy was stable under cold-rolling. With the increase in reduction ratio from 70% to 90%, the microstructure of the alloys evolved from deformed dendrite structure to fiber-like structure. The alloy cold-rolled with the reduction ratio of 70% exhibited optimum mechanical properties of combined high fracture strength of 1012 MPa and plastic strain of 10.1%, which are closely correlated with the dendrite structure of the alloy. It is indicated that the proper cold-rolling is an effective way to improve the mechanical properties of the titanium alloy.

The present study investigated the effect of cold rolling reduction on microstructure and mechanical properties of a 204C2 Cr–Mn austenitic stainless steel which contained 16%Cr, 2%Ni, 9%Mn and 0.083 %C). The 204C2 austenitic stainless steels were cold rolled at multifarious thickness reductions of 10%, 20%, 30%,40% and 50%, which were compared with the solution-treated one. Microstructure of them was investigated by means of optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction technique and scanning electron microscopy. For mechanical properties investigations, hardness and tensile tests were carried out. Results shows that the cold rolling reduction induced the martensitic transformation (γ→α ́) in the structure of the austenitic stainless steel. With the increase of the rolling reduction, the amount of strain-induced martensite increased gradually. Hardness, ultimate tensile strength and yield strength increased with the incremental rolling reduction in 204C2 stainless steels, while the elongation decreased. At the thickness reduction of 50%, the specimen obtained best strength and hardness. Hardness of 204C2 stain steel reached 679HV. Ultimate tensile strength reached 1721 MPa. Yield strength reached 1496 MPa.
