As dementia progresses, the elderly with dementia often have difficulties finishing their meals and weight loss is a common feature at this stage of their dementia journey. Eating disorders cause tremendous caregiver stress and burden. In considering provision of best care for this group of elderly, the hospital is probably not the best place and yet, they are frequently brought in to the hospital to seek help for fever, pneumonia, dislodged feeding tube, medical complications arising from poor feeding and dehydration. It is important to understand the aetiology of poor feeding among this group of patients and advise the patients and their family on the appropriate management strategies to improve the intake of food and to maximize their quality of life. At this stage of dementia, focusing on means to ensure nutritional needs are met may end up causing further harm and distress.

Sarcopenia, the loss of muscle mass and function with ageing, is a multifactorial condition that slowly develops over decades and becomes a significant contributor to disability in the older population. Malnutrition and alterations in the muscle anabolic response to nutritional stimuli have been identified as potentially preventable factors that may significantly contribute to sarcopenia. In the present article we review the most recent findings regarding the role of nutritional factors in the development, prevention and treatment of sarcopenia. Specifically, we focus on the nutritional needs of the elderly; the age-related changes in the response of muscle protein metabolism to feeding and to the endogenous hormones released during feeding; and the role played by the splanchnic tissues in the response of muscle proteins to feeding. Finally, we review the issues relative to the potential use of nutritional therapies, including supplementation, for the prevention and treatment of sarcopenia.

Nutrition refers to the most important factors of the influence of the external environment on the state of health, working capacity and life expectancy of a person. For this reason, every person needs high-quality and specialized nutrition that will fill all the needs of the body in nutrients, namely proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, vitamins and mineral elements. This scientific article analyzes and systematizes approaches to ensuring the nutritional needs of people of older age groups and recommends ratios in the composition of diets according to gender and age characteristics. The standards of energy and nutritional requirements for various groups of the population are analyzed. The problems associated with the development of the production of products for the elderly are investigated and promising directions of their production are established. It is determined that the most social problem for the elderly is providing the body with biologically and physiologically valuable substances, in particular macro - and microelements, vitamins, essential amino acids, the presence and ratio of which has a significant impact on the processes of metabolism and assimilation by the body.
