The Marriage Act 1836 established the foundations of modern marriage law, allowing couples to marry in register offices and non-Anglican places of worship for the first time. Rebecca Probert draws on an exceptionally wide range of primary sources to provide the first detailed examination of marriage legislation, social practice, and their mutual interplay, from 1836 through to the unanticipated demands of the 2020 coronavirus pandemic. She analyses how and why the law has evolved, closely interrogating the parliamentary and societal debates behind legislation. She demonstrates how people have chosen to marry and how those choices have changed, and evaluates how far the law has been help or hindrance in enabling couples to marry in ways that reflect their beliefs, be they religious or secular. In an era of individual choice and multiculturalism, Tying the Knot sign posts possible ways in which future legislators might avoid the pitfalls of the past.

I work for the Law Library Microform Consortium (LLMC), a cooperative with some 900 participating members. Most are in the US, with a fair number in Canada and some in Australia, the UK and sixteen other countries. For over a quarter of a century LLMC has provided its member libraries with a wide range of legal titles, including much Commonwealth material, on microfiche. We grew hoary in that task, but have been rejuvenated in a new role. We've just launched an on-line digital library, LLMC-Digital, which will provide vastly enhanced access to our materials. The foundation for this endeavour is our backfile of 92,000 volumes (some 49-million page images) filmed during the past 27 years. To that base will be added every new title acquired in LLMC's future filming or scanning.

This article examines Weimar Germany's public controversy about the Republic's place in German history. In a period that was seen by many contemporaries as a time deprived of historical context, all political parties tried to legitimise their actions and aims through the construction of very different historical traditions. Based on a wide range of primary sources, the article seeks to analyse this ‘battle over the past’ within the broader context of Weimar's political culture and the Republic's struggle for survival.

The current-voltage and lux-ampere characteristics, as well as the photovoltage spectra and the lux dependence of the photovoltage in the gate and photodiode modes of the p-TlGaSe2 - p-CuInSe2 heterojunction obtained for the first time are studied. It was found that this heterostructure has a pronounced diode character. The I - V characteristic of the structure under study is characterized by the fact that at low voltages it obeys well the law I ~ exp (eU / βkT). The photovoltage spectrum covers a wide range of wavelengths (0.55 - 1.85 µm). In this case, pronounced maxima are observed at λ = 0.59 and λ = 0.95 μm. The relaxation time τ determined from the kinetics of the photo-voltage in the valve mode is ~ 20 μs.

This book provides for the first time an accessible, comprehensive study of Alfred Schnittke’s Concerto Grosso no. 1 (1977). One of Schnittke’s best-known and most compelling works, the Concerto Grosso no. 1 sounds the surface of late Soviet life, resonating as well with contemporary compositional currents around the world. This innovative monograph builds on existing publications about the Concerto Grosso no. 1 in English, Russian, and German, augmenting and complicating them. It adds new information from underused primary sources, including Schnittke’s unpublished correspondence and his many published interviews. It also engages further with his sketches for the Concerto Grosso no. 1 and contemporary Soviet musical criticism. The result is a more objective, historical appraisal of this rich, multifaceted composition. The Concerto Grosso no. 1 provided a utopian model of the contemporary soundscape. It was a decisive point in Schnittke’s development of the approach he called polystylism, which aimed to contain in a single composition the wide range of contemporary musical styles, including jazz, pop, rock, and serial music. Thanks to it and his other similar compositions, Schnittke became one of the most-performed and most-recorded living composers at the end of the twentieth century. The novel structure of this book engages the Concerto Grosso no. 1 conceptually, historically, musically, and phenomenologically: the six movements of the composition frame the six chapters. The present volume thus provides a holistic accounting of Schnittke’s Concerto Grosso no. 1, its influences, and its impact on subsequent music making in the Soviet Union and worldwide.

For the first time, more than 700 award, anniversary and commemorative badges reflecting the history of hygiene, microbiology and epidemiology were systematized and analyzed. The following directions are identified for studying the history of these medical specialties and educational and scientific disciplines with the help of epigraphy: 1) outstanding figures of hygiene, microbiology and epidemiology; 2) hygienic and epidemiological congresses, congresses and other forums; 3) specialized research institutions; 4) educational institutions and faculties of universities that train specialists in the field of hygiene, microbiology and epidemiology; 5) pathogens and vectors of infectious diseases; 6) methods of detecting microorganisms and treating infections; 7) the COVID-19 pandemic. The study showed that during the XX and XXI centuries a large number of badges (awards and commemorative) were issued, reflecting selected pages of the history of hygiene, microbiology and epidemiology. These faleristic objects related to the art of small forms are full-fledged primary sources for studying the history of these areas of medicine and objects for the collections of state, municipal and departmental museums of medical subjects. Signs with portraits of outstanding hygienists, microbiologists and epidemiologists can be used to study and illustrate their life and activities, contribution to science and perpetuate their memory. Epigraphy on the presented signs can help both in establishing the time of a particular fact or event in the past (for example, the dates of the life and activity of an outstanding scientist; the time, place and subject of the scientific forum, the opening date of the research institute, educational institution, faculty or department, etc.), and the specifics of conducting scientific research in the field of hygiene, microbiology and epidemiology (pathogens and vectors of diseases; concepts, devices and research methods, methods of diagnosis and prevention of infectious diseases, etc.).

Ethnographic accounts of animal pulverization using stone grinding implements have led archaeologists to believe that this same behavior took place in the past. This important subsistence activity can now be confirmed through the immunological analysis of archaeological materials. Small-mammal blood-protein residue has been identified immunologically for the first time on milling equipment from two archaeological sites in southern California. Immunoprotein trace analysis has the potential for a wide range of applications in the study of prehistory.

Purpose This paper aims to explore, for the first time over a long period of time, the autobiographical memory of Israeli veterans of the 1948 War, pertaining to the 1948 Palestinian exodus that led to the creation of the Palestinian refugee problem. Does this memory include the Zionist narrative (i.e. willing flight of the Palestinian refugees) or a critical narrative (i.e. willing flight and expulsion)? One of the primary sources to influence the collective memory of conflicts is the autobiographical memory. This memory is also one of the primary sources for research of the past. Thus, autobiographical memory is of importance. Design/methodology/approach Methodologically, this is done through an analysis of all 1948 veterans’ memoirs published between 1949 and 2004. Interviews were also conducted with various veterans, to understand the dynamics of their memoir publication. Findings Empirical findings suggest that during the first period (1949-1968), this memory was exclusively Zionist; during the second (1969-1978), it became slightly critical; and during the third (1979-2004), the critical tendency became more prevalent. Onward, the nine empirical causes for the presentation of exodus the way it was presented are discussed. Theoretical findings relate, inter alia, to the importance of micro factors in shaping the autobiographical memory, assembles seven such theoretical factors, suggests that these factors can influence in two ways (promoting collective memory change or inhibiting it), and that their impact can change over time. Originality/value Taken together, the paper contributes empirical and theoretical findings that are based on a solid and wide scope research.

This article is a book review of Natalie Klein Dispute Settlement in the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 2005) (418 pages). The law of the sea has been one of the most dynamic and disputed areas of international law for most of the past several centuries. The fact that the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea contains a dispute settlement provision that involves compulsory adjudication was a move away from the contentious past characterised by unilateral action. Mossop states that Klein has written a technically excellent text outlining the history and development of the dispute procedures, the requirement of each part of the process, and the extent to which the cases heard under the dispute procedures have cast light on the operation of the procedures. Although the book will be of significant value to practitioners and scholars dealing with this area of the law, Mossop argues that the detailed examination of the topic means that the book will not be suitable as a student textbook. It is concluded that the book is a solid foundation against which later cases can be compared.

The purpose of the article is to analyze the role and place of “museum of conscience” in modern politics of memory and cultural space. The methodology is based on a comprehensive study of a wide range of museum expositions (interviews, reports, museum projects, reviews of museum collections, etc.) and generalization of the obtained material to identify current trends in the development of "museums of conscience" in the context of memory culture. Scientific novelty. On the example of specific museum research institutions (the Sixth District Museum in Cape Town, the Holocaust Memorial Museum (Washington, USA), the Museum of Military Childhood in Sarajevo, etc.) for the first time in Ukrainian historiography, their contribution to the process of deeper study of crimes of the past and its reflection in modern politics of memory and cultural space is analyzed. Conclusions: Places of conscience are museums, memorials, and other historical places, which aim not only to preserve memory but also to stimulate people’s conscience. While working with a visitor, they prefer forms that contribute to the involvement of a visitor in discussion and dialogue. The museum exhibit serves as a safe place to discuss sharp issues and reconcile conflicting parties in society. The museum collection and the results of its research are distributed in order to stimulate the human conscience. The task of the museums is not only to preserve the memory about the crimes of the past but also to provide an opportunity for a visitor to establish a connection between this past and today’s struggle for human rights.
