Being connected “anywhere anytime” has become a way of life for much of the world's population. Thanks to major technological advances in internet, wireless communication, video technology, silicon manufacturing, etc., our mobile devices have become not only faster and more powerful, but also smaller and sleeker. With the popularity of rich media on the rise, the no. 1 data traffic over the mobile network is attributed to video. That is the reason why we depict the Freeman Dyson's book title “From Eros to Gaia.” Equipped with rich media capabilities, our mobile devices enable a completely different storytelling experience unlike anything the human race has experienced before. In this paper, we review the latest technological evolutions in the wireless space and in the video space, namely long-term evolution and high-efficiency video coding, respectively. We then discuss how these advanced technologies impact our way of life at present and in years to come.

The rapidly-growing number of mobile subscribers has led to the creation of a large number of signalling messages. This makes it difficult to efficiently handle the mobility of subscribers in mobile cellular networks. The long-term evolution (LTE) architecture provides software-defined networking (SDN) to meet the requirements of 5G networks and to forward massive mobile data traffic. The SDN solution proposes separation of the control and data planes of a network. Centralized mobility management (CMM) is widely used in current mobile network technologies, such as 4G networks. One of the problems related to CMM is a single point of failure. To solve the problems of CMM and in order to provide for efficient mobility management, IETF has developed a solution called distributed mobility management (DMM), in which mobility is handled via the nearest mobility anchor. In this paper, we propose a DMM solution with handover operations for SDN-enabled mobile networks. The advantage of the proposed solution is that intra and inter handover procedures are defined with the data buffering and forwarding processes between base stations and mobility anchors. We adopt a simulation model to evaluate and compare the proposed solution with the existing solution in terms of handover latency, packet loss and handover failures.

The Long Term Evolution (LTE) cellular technology provides higher data rates than its predecessor technologies. This advancement paves the way for more data services, including improved multimedia services. Three-dimensional (3D) video transmission is one such service that can benefit from LTE deployment. For a positive uptake of 3D video transmission, the network must provide a good Quality of Service (QoS). In this paper the authors evaluate the LTE network's performance when transmitting Multi-view Video Coding (MVC) using simulcast and inter-view prediction coding. Furthermore, the authors evaluate the system using both the H.264/AVC (Advanced Video Coding) and the more recent High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) and their MVC extensions. Results show that, in an urban environment, LTE can accommodate a maximum of 93 users per cell, with adequate QoS, when transmitting 3D HEVC video at Common Intermediate Format (CIF) resolution. Moreover, cross-layer techniques can be used to reduce the QoS degradation as the user moves away from the eNodeB by transmitting lower resolution video.

MPEG Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (MPEG-DASH) is a standard for HTTP streaming that allows interoperability between servers and clients from different vendors which is able to adjust the speed of video delivery to changing bandwidth. Today there is the latest H.265 video coding known as the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). This research implemented the delivery of the H.265 video through the method of Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) using mobile devices. The test was conducted by sending videos over 3G networks with GSM length video segment consists of 2 seconds, 5 seconds, 10 seconds and 20 seconds. The video quality provided in this study consisted of 5 video levels with different bit rates. From the test results, the submitted videos using a smaller video segment generated greater throughput and acquired more video quality with a higher bit rate than the video to a larger segment. Video delivery with segment of 2 seconds acquired video quality with the highest level of 83%, meanwhile the video delivery segment of 20 seconds obtained video quality with the highest level of 33%.

Recent technological advancements allowed videos to come from a simple sequence of 2D images to be displayed in a flat screen display into spherical representations of one’s surroundings, capable of creating a realistic immersive experience when allied to head-mounted displays. In order to explore the existing infrastructure for video coding, 360-degrees videos are pre-processed and then encoded by conventional video coding standards. However, the flattened version of 360-degrees videos present some peculiarities which are not present in conventional videos, and therefore, may not be properly exploited by conventional video coders. Aiming to find evidence that conventional video encoders can be adapted to perform better over 360-degrees videos, this work performs an evaluation on the intra-frame prediction performed by the High Efficiency Video Coding over 360-degrees videos in the equirectangular projection. Experimental results point that 360-degrees videos present spatial properties that make some regions of the frame likely to be encoded using a reduced set of prediction modes and block sizes. This behavior could be used in the development of fast decision and energy saving algorithms by evaluating a reduced set of prediction modes and block sizes depending on the regions of the frame being encoded.

The 2018 Nobel Economics Prize was awarded to two American economists - William D. Nordhaus and Paul M. Romer - who designed methods for better assessing environmental issues and technological advances on growth. This year’s Laureates, Nordhaus was the first person to create an intergrated model to assess interactions between society and nature and Romer laid the foundation for what is now called endogenous growth theory. According to the Swedish Royal Academy of Sciences, these two macroeconomists’ research have helped “significantly broaden the scope of economic analysis by constructing models that explain how the market economy interacts with nature and knowledge” which integrates climate change measures into long-term sustainable economic growth. Public opinion in the United States and elsewhere celebrated the liberation of Afghan women following the defeat of the Taliban government. The United States promised to stay in Afghanistan and foster security, economic development, and human rights for all, especially women. After years of funding various anti- Soviet Mujahidin warlords, the United States had agreed to help reconstruct the country once before in 1992, when the Soviet-backed government fell, but had lost interest when the warlords began to fight among themselves. This time, however, it was going to be different. To date, however, conditions have not improved for most Afghan women and reconstruction has barely begun. How did this happen? This article explores media presentations of Afghan women and then compares them with recent reports from human rights organizations and other eyewitness accounts. It argues that the media depictions were built on earlier conceptions of Muslim societies and allowed us to adopt a romantic view that disguised or covered up the more complex historical context of Afghan history and American involvement in it. We allowed ourselves to believe that Afghans were exotic characters who were modernizing or progressing toward a western way of life, despite the temporary setback imposed by the Taliban government. In Afghanistan, however, there was a new trope: the feminist Afghan woman activist. Images of prominent Afghan women sans burqa were much favored by the mass media and American policymakers. The result, however, was not a new focus on funding feminist political organizations or making women’s rights a foreign policy priority; rather, it was an unwillingness to fulfill obligations incurred during decades of American-funded mujahidin warfare, to face the existence of deteriorating conditions for women, resumed opium cultivation, and a resurgent Taliban, or to commit to a multilateral approach that would bring in the funds and expertise needed to sustain a long-term process of reconstruction.
