Evolution of the streamwise vortices generated between leading edge tubercles

Sinusoidal modifications to the leading edge of a foil, or tubercles, have been shown to improve aerodynamic performance under certain flow conditions. One of the mechanisms of performance enhancement is believed to be the generation of streamwise vortices, which improve the momentum exchange in the boundary layer. This experimental and numerical study investigates the formation and evolution of these streamwise vortices at a low Reynolds number of $Re=2230$, providing insight into both the averaged and time-dependent flow patterns. Furthermore, the strength of the vortices is quantified through calculation of the vorticity and circulation, and it is found that the circulation increases in the downstream direction. There is strong agreement between the experimental and numerical observations, and this allows close examination of the flow structure. The results demonstrate that the presence of strong pressure gradients near the leading edge gives rise to a significant surface flux of vorticity in this region. As soon as this vorticity is created, it is stretched, tilted and diffused in a highly three-dimensional manner. These processes lead to the generation of a pair of streamwise vortices between the tubercle peaks. A horseshoe-shaped separation zone is shown to initiate behind a tubercle trough, and this region of separation is bounded by a canopy of boundary-layer vorticity. Along the sides of this shear layer canopy, a continued influx of boundary-layer vorticity occurs, resulting in an increase in circulation of the primary streamwise vortices in the downstream direction. Flow visualisation and particle image velocimetry studies support these observations and demonstrate that the flow characteristics vary with time, particularly near the trailing edge and at a higher angle of attack. Numerical evaluation of the lift and drag coefficients reveals that, for this particular flow regime, the performance of a foil with tubercles is slightly better than that of an unmodified foil.

This research is concerned with detailed experiments on spanwise nonuniformity of nominally planar turbulent boundary layers. Two procedures for eliminating spanwise nonuniformity are studied. One method is to remove the original, natural vortices by introducing additional ones arising from protuberances attached to the leading edge of a flat plate, and the other technique is by making the main flow entirely uniform. Effects of artificially controlled streamwise vortices on spanwise nonuniformity are examined. From these experiments, the process by which induced vortices cause nonuniformity of turbulent boundary layer characteristics in the spanwise direction is discussed.

A model of a laminar viscous conducting flow, near a dielectric disc in a uniform magnetic field and in the presence of external rotation, is considered, where there is a uniform suction and an axial temperature gradient between the flow and the disc’s surface. It is assumed that the parameters of the suction or the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) interaction are such that the nonlinear inertial terms, related to the circulation flow, are negligible in the differential equations of the MHD boundary layer on a rotating disc. Analysis of the motion and energy equations, taking the dependence of density on temperature into account, is carried out using the Dorodnitsyn transformation. The exact analytical solution for the boundary layer and heat transfer equations is obtained and analysed, neglecting the viscous and Joule dissipation. The dependence of the flow characteristics in the boundary layer on the rate of suction and the magnetic field induction is studied. It is shown that the direction of the radial flow in the boundary layer on a disc can be changed, not only by variation of the ratio between the angular velocities in the external flow and the boundary layer, but also by changing the ratio of the temperatures in these two flows, as well as by varying the hydrodynamic Prandtl number. The approximate calculation of a three-dimensional flow in a rotating cylinder with a braking disc (or lid) is carried out, demonstrating that a magnetic field slows the circulation velocity in a rotating cylinder.

Theoretical and an experimental research results of the disturbances development in a swept wing boundary layer are presented at Mach number М = 2. In experiments development of natural and small amplitude controllable disturbances downstream was studied. Experiments were carried out on a swept wing model with a lenticular profile at a zero attack angle. The swept angle of a leading edge was 40°. Wave parameters of moving disturbances were determined. In frames of the linear theory and an approach of the local self-similar mean flow the stability of a compressible three-dimensional boundary layer is studied. Good agreement of the theory with experimental results for transversal scales of unstable vertices of the secondary flow was obtained. However the calculated amplification rates differ from measured values considerably. This disagreement is explained by the nonlinear processes observed in experiment

This article is concerned with the class of solutions of gas boundary layer containing uniform, spherical solid particles over the surface of rotating axisymmetric round-nosed body. By using the method of transformed coordinates, the boundary layer equations for two-phase flow are mapped into a regular and stationary computational domain and then solved numerically by using implicit finite difference method. In this study, a rotating hemisphere is used as a particular example to elucidate the heat transfer mechanism near the surface of round-nosed bodies. We will investigate whether the presence of dust particles in carrier fluid disturbs the flow characteristics associated with rotating hemisphere or not. A comprehensive parametric analysis is presented to show the influence of the particle loading, the buoyancy ratio parameter, and the surface of rotating hemisphere on the numerical findings. In the absence of dust particles, the results are graphically compared with existing data in the open literature, and an excellent agreement has been found. It is noted that the concentration of dust particles’ parameter, Dρ, strongly influences the heat transport rate near the leading edge.

A numerical investigation of chaotic laminar flow and heat transfer in isothermal-wall square-channel configurations is presented. The computations, based on a finite-volume method with the SIMPLEC algorithm, are conducted in terms of Péclet numbers ranging from 7 to 7×105. The geometries, based on the split-and-recombine (SAR) principle, are first proposed for micromixing purposes, and are then optimized and scaled up to three-dimensional minichannels with 3-mm sides that are capable of handling industrial fluid manipulation processes. The aim is to assess the feasibility of this mass- and heat-transfer technique for out-of-laboratory commercial applications and to compare different configurations from a process intensification point of view. The effects of the geometry on heat transfer and flow characteristics are examined. Results show that the flux recombination phenomenon mimicking the baker’s transform in the SAR-1 and SAR-2 configurations produces chaotic structures and promotes mass transfer. This phenomenon also accounts for higher convective heat transfer exemplified by increased values of the Nusselt number compared to the chaotic continuous-flow configuration and the baseline plain square-duct geometry. Energy expenditures are explored and the overall heat transfer enhancement factor for equal pumping power is calculated. The SAR-2 configuration reveals superior heat-transfer characteristics, enhancing the global gain by up to 17-fold over the plain duct heat exchanger.

The aerodynamic performance of blade affects the vibration characteristics and stable operation of turbomachinery closely. The aerodynamic performance of turbine stage can be improved by using swept blade. In this paper, the RANS method and the RNG k-? turbulence mode were adopted to investigate the unsteady flow characteristics and excitation force of swept blade stage. According to the results, for the swept blade, the fluid of boundary layer shifts in radial direction due to the influence of geometric construction. It is observed that there is similar wake development for several kinds of stators, and the wake has a notable effect on the boundary layer of the rotor blades. When compared with straight blade, pressure fluctuation of forward-swept blade is decreased while the pressure fluctuation of backward-swept blade is increased. The axial and tangential fundamental frequency excitation force factors of 15?forward-swept blade are 0.139 and 0.052 respectively, which are the least, and all excitation force factors are in the normal range. The excitation factor of the forward-swept blade is decreased compared with straight blade, and the decreasing percentage is closely related to the swept angle. As for backward-swept blades, the situation is the other way around. Additionally, the change of axial excitation factor is more obvious. So the vibration reduction performance of forward-swept blade is better.

A numerical study into magneto-aerodynamic bleed control systems has been undertaken with the intent of improving the shock swallowing ability of high speed engine intakes. Past research has shown that bleed slots effectively remove sufficient mass flow of air from the system to permit shocks to be swallowed. A magnetic field's influence on a charged boundary layer creates a possibility of sealing a bleed slot when not needed. 2D bleed slots were modeled using structured grids for use with the FLUENT CFD solver. User defined functions were written to simulate charge generation and magnetic field forces. Solutions revealed that bleed slot angles, free stream Mach numbers, pressure ratios, boundary layer displacement thickness, field strength and field position all affect how the system performs. Results have shown that a properly positioned magnetic field can reduce sonic flow coefficients up to 88%, thus justifying further research and investment in wind tunnel experiments.

The three-dimensional coupled explicit Reynolds Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) equations and the two equation shear-stress transport k-w (SST k-w) model has been employed to numerically simulate the cold flow field in a special-shaped cavity-based supersonic combustor. In a cross-section shaped rectangular, hypersonic inlet with airflow at Mach 2.0 chamber, shock structures and flow characteristics of a herringbone-shaped boss and a herringbone-shaped cavity models were discussed, respectively. The results indicate: Firstly, according to the similarities of bevel-cutting shock characteristics between the boss case and the cavity case, the boss structure can serve as an ideal alternative model for shear-layer. Secondly, the eddies within cavity are composed of herringbone-spanwise vortexes, columnar vortices in the front and main-spanwise vortexes in the rear, featuring tilting, twisting and stretching. Thirdly, the simulated bottom-flow of cavity is in good agreement with experimental result, while the reverse flow-entrainment resulting from herringbone geometry and pressure gradient. However, the herringbone-shaped cavity has a better performance in fuel-mixing.

Abstract A numerical study of rib augmented cooling of turbine blades is reported in this paper. The time-dependent velocity field around a pair of symmetrically placed ribs on the walls of a three-dimensional rectangular channel was studied by use of a modified version of Marker-And-Cell algorithm to solve the unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes and energy equations. The flow structures are presented with the help of instantaneous velocity vector and vorticity fields, FFT and time averaged and rms values of components of velocity. The spanwise averaged Nusselt number is found to increase at the locations of reattachment. The numerical results are compared with available numerical and experimental results. The presence of ribs leads to complex flow fields with regions of flow separation before and after the ribs. Each interruption in the flow field due to the surface mounted rib enables the velocity distribution to be more homogeneous and a new boundary layer starts developing downstream of the rib. The heat transfer is primarily enhanced due to the decrease in the thermal resistance owing to the thinner boundary layers on the interrupted surfaces. Another reason for heat transfer enhancement can be attributed to the mixing induced by large-scale structures present downstream of the separation point.

Both slipstream deformation and viscous effects are factors that affect the performance of a rotating marine propeller but neither of them has been properly treated in most of the current lifting-surface methods and surface panel theories. With the introduction of a partial roll-up wake model that is flexible to various cases of propeller geometry and loading condition, this paper presents a vortex-lattice method that can improve propeller performance prediction especially at heavy loading conditions. Some observations on the calculation of the blade leading-edge suction force and how to deduct it to account for the viscous drag increasing are given. The scale effect of propeller performance can be readily predicted by the quasi-three-dimensional boundary-layer calculation presented in this paper. Some patterns of the limiting streamlines on blade surfaces are also illustrated and compared with experimental results.
