The caudal fin of swimming animals can be modelled as a thrust-producing flapping foil. When considered alone, such a foil produces on average a jet wake with a positive net momentum. It has been argued that the instability characteristics of these averaged wakes are linked to the propulsion efficiency of swimming animals. Here, we reconsider this question by taking into account both the thrust and the drag exerted on a self-propelled swimming body. To do so, we study the stability of a family of momentumless wakes, constructed as the Oseen approximation of a force doublet moving at constant velocity. By performing a local stability analysis, we first show that these wakes undergo a transition from absolute to convective instability. Then, using the time stepper approach by integrating the linearised Navier–Stokes system, we investigate the global stability and reveal the influence of a non-parallel base flow as well as the role of the locally absolutely unstable upstream region in the wake. Finally, to complete the global scenario, we address the nonlinear evolution of the wake disturbance. These results are then discussed in the context of aquatic locomotion. According to the present stability results, and assuming the Oseen approximation whose validity has been assessed only for moderate Reynolds number, the momentumless wake of aquatic animals is generally stable, whereas the corresponding thrust part is unstable. It is therefore essential to consider all forces exerted on a self-propelled animal when discussing its wake stability and its propulsion efficiency.

We study the flow past a sphere rotating in the transverse direction with respect to the incoming uniform flow, and particularly consider the stability features of the wake as a function of the Reynolds number $Re$ and the sphere dimensionless rotation rate $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA}$. Direct numerical simulations and three-dimensional global stability analyses are performed in the ranges $150\leqslant \mathit{Re}\leqslant 300$ and $0\leqslant \unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA}\leqslant 1.2$. We first describe the base flow, computed as the steady solution of the Navier–Stokes equation, with special attention to the structure of the recirculating region and to the lift force exerted on the sphere. The stability analysis of this base flow shows the existence of two different unstable modes, which occur in different regions of the $Re/\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA}$ parameter plane. Mode I, which exists for weak rotations ($\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA}<0.4$), is similar to the unsteady mode existing for a non-rotating sphere. Mode II, which exists for larger rotations ($\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA}>0.7$), is characterized by a larger frequency. Both modes preserve the planar symmetry of the base flow. We detail the structure of these eigenmodes, as well as their structural sensitivity, using adjoint methods. Considering small rotations, we then compare the numerical results with those obtained using weakly nonlinear approaches. We show that the steady bifurcation occurring for $Re>212$ for a non-rotating sphere is changed into an imperfect bifurcation, unveiling the existence of two other base-flow solutions which are always unstable.

This is the first part of a series of two papers on unsteady computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods for the numerical simulation of aerodynamic noise generation and propagation. In this part, the stability, accuracy, and efficiency of implicit Runge–Kutta schemes for the temporal integration of the compressible Navier–Stokes equations are investigated in the context of a CFD code for turbomachinery applications. Using two model academic problems, the properties of two explicit first stage, singly diagonally implicit Runge–Kutta (ESDIRK) schemes of second- and third-order accuracy are quantified and compared with more conventional second-order multistep methods. Finally, to assess the ESDIRK schemes in the context of an industrially relevant configuration, the schemes are applied to predict the tonal noise generation and transmission in a modern high bypass ratio fan stage and comparisons with the corresponding experimental data are provided.

The stability of incompressible boundary-layer flows on a semi-infinite flat plate and the growth of disturbances in such flows are investigated by numerical integration of the complete Navier–;Stokes equations for laminar two-dimensional flows. Forced time-dependent disturbances are introduced into the flow field and the reaction of the flow to such disturbances is studied by directly solving the Navier–Stokes equations using a finite-difference method. An implicit finitedifference scheme was developed for the calculation of the extremely unsteady flow fields which arose from the forced time-dependent disturbances. The problem of the numerical stability of the method called for special attention in order to avoid possible distortions of the results caused by the interaction of unstable numerical oscillations with physically meaningful perturbations. A demonstration of the suitability of the numerical method for the investigation of stability and the initial growth of disturbances is presented for small periodic perturbations. For this particular case the numerical results can be compared with linear stability theory and experimental measurements. In this paper a number of numerical calculations for small periodic disturbances are discussed in detail. The results are generally in fairly close agreement with linear stability theory or experimental measurements.

The linear instability of a vortex ring with swirl with Gaussian distributions of azimuthal vorticity and velocity in its core is studied by direct numerical simulation. The numerical study is carried out in two steps: first, an axisymmetric simulation of the Navier–Stokes equations is performed to obtain the quasi-steady state that forms a base flow; then, the equations are linearized around this base flow and integrated for a sufficiently long time to obtain the characteristics of the most unstable mode. It is shown that the vortex rings are subjected to curvature instability as predicted analytically by Blanco-Rodríguez & Le Dizès (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 814, 2017, pp. 397–415). Both the structure and the growth rate of the unstable modes obtained numerically are in good agreement with the analytical results. However, a small overestimation (e.g. 22 % for a curvature instability mode) by the theory of the numerical growth rate is found for some instability modes. This is most likely due to evaluation of the critical layer damping which is performed for the waves on axisymmetric line vortices in the analysis. The actual position of the critical layer is affected by deformation of the core due to the curvature effect; as a result, the damping rate changes since it is sensitive to the position of the critical layer. Competition between the curvature and elliptic instabilities is also investigated. Without swirl, only the elliptic instability is observed in agreement with previous numerical and experimental results. In the presence of swirl, sharp bands of both curvature and elliptic instabilities are obtained for $\unicode[STIX]{x1D700}=a/R=0.1$, where $a$ is the vortex core radius and $R$ the ring radius, while the elliptic instability dominates for $\unicode[STIX]{x1D700}=0.18$. New types of instability mode are also obtained: a special curvature mode composed of three waves is observed and spiral modes that do not seem to be related to any wave resonance. The curvature instability is also confirmed by direct numerical simulation of the full Navier–Stokes equations. Weakly nonlinear saturation and subsequent decay of the curvature instability are also observed.

The nonlinear stability and bifurcation of the one-dimensional channel (Poiseuille) flow is examined for a Johnson-Segalman fluid. The velocity and stress are represented by orthonormal functions in the transverse direction to the flow. The flow field is obtained from the conservation and constitutive equations using the Galerkin projection method. Both inertia and normal stress effects are included. The stability picture is dramatically influenced by the viscosity ratio. The range of shear rate or Weissenberg number for which the base flow is unstable increases from zero as the fluid deviates from the Newtonian limit as decreases. Typically, two turning points are observed near the critical Weissenberg numbers. The transient response is heavily influenced by the level of inertia. It is found that the flow responds oscillatorily. When the Reynolds number is small, and monotonically at large Reynolds number when elastic effects are dominated by inertia.

Energy saving devices (ESD) such as propeller ducts, pre-swirl stators, pre-nozzles, etc have been explored as a more economic and reliable approach to reduce energy consumption for both in-operation and newly design ships over the past decades. Those energy saving devices work in the principle of reducing ship resistance and improving propulsion efficiency as well as hull-propeller interactions. Potential saving from various types of ESD have been reported in literature from the range of 3–9% [1] for propulsion efficiency dependent on different measures. Deployment of those devices on actual full-scale ships has been limited over the past years. One of the key obstacles in application of ESD is the lack of confidence in measuring its efficiency on full-scale ships in actual operational conditions. Advances in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has provided an alternative approach from model scale test to better understand uncertainties in prediction of ESD efficiency in full-scale ship operations [Shin et al, 2013]. In this work a high fidelity CFD model is presented for investigation effects of pre-nozzles on propulsion efficiency and ship resistance. The model is based on the Reynolds Average Navier-Stokes (RANS) solver with different turbulent models including a hybrid detached eddy simulation (DES) approach for predictions of complex near body flow features as well as in the wake regions from hull and propeller. The model is validated with model test for both towing and self-propulsion conditions. Finally a study of pre-nozzle effects on propeller efficiency as well as hull-propeller interaction is presented and compared with available experimental data (Tokyo 2015 Workshop). The current work constitutes a fundamental approach towards designing more efficient ESD for a specific hull form and propeller.

This paper deals with the numerical study of bifurcations in a two-sided lid driven cavity flow. The flow is generated by moving the upper wall to the right while moving the left wall downwards. Numerical simulations are performed by solving the unsteady two dimensional Navier-Stokes equations using the finite volume method and multigrid acceleration. In this problem, the ratio of the height to the width of the cavity are ranged from H/L = 0.25 to 1.5. The code for this cavity is presented using rectangular cavity with the grids 144 × 36, 144 × 72, 144 × 104, 144 × 136, 144 × 176 and 144 × 216. Numerous comparisons with the results available in the literature are given. Very good agreements are found between current numerical results and published numerical results. Various velocity ratios ranged in 0.01≤ α ≤ 0.99 at a fixed aspect ratios (A = 0.5, 0.75, 1.25 and 1.5) were considered. It is observed that the transition to the unsteady regime follows the classical scheme of a Hopf bifurcation. The stability analysis depending on the aspect ratio, velocity ratios α and the Reynolds number when transition phenomenon occurs is considered in this paper.

AbstractWe propose and analyze spectral direction splitting schemes for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The schemes combine a Legendre-spectral method for the spatial discretization and a pressure-stabilization/direction splitting scheme for the temporal discretization, leading to a sequence of one-dimensional elliptic equations at each time step while preserving the same order of accuracy as the usual pressure-stabilization schemes. We prove that these schemes are unconditionally stable, and present numerical results which demonstrate the stability, accuracy, and efficiency of the proposed methods.
