AbstractVitória Bay is located in the south-central part of the State of Espírito Santo (SES). Multiproxy analyses were performed on samples from a 490-cm-long sediment core collected at the coordinates 40°18′23′′W and 20°14′48′′S. The objective of this study was to identify and integrate the multiproxy data to determine the environmental dynamics during the Holocene. The material was subsampled every 10 m and submitted to standard methodological processing. The sediment core was dated to two depths: the oldest age was between 9396 and 9520 cal yr BP at a 480-cm depth, and the youngest age was from 7423 to 7511 cal yr BP at a 304-cm depth. The integrated analysis revealed evidence of three major environmental changes in Vitória Bay. The first phase had a fluvial influence (depth of 490–480 cm; 9396–9520 cal yr BP). This was followed by a transitional period (depth of 480–290 cm; 7423–7511 cal yr BP) with a salt influence due to the Last Marine Transgression (LMT). Later, the environmental stability was similar to that of today (290 cm to the core top). This was a reflection of the Last Marine Regression (LMR) in the Holocene.

AbstractDuring CHINARE-22 (December 2005–March 2006), we investigated six penguin colonies in the Vestfold Hills, East Antarctica, and collected several penguin ornithogenic sediment cores, samples of fresh guano and modern penguin bone and feather. We selected seven penguin bones and feathers and six sediments from the longest sediment core and performed AMS14C dating. The results indicate that penguins occupied the Vestfold Hills as early as 8500 calibrated years before present (cal. yrbp), following local deglaciation and the formation of the ice free area. This is the first report on the Holocene history of penguins in the Vestfold Hills. As in other areas of Antarctica, penguins occupied this area as soon as local ice retreated and the ice free area formed, and they are very sensitive to climatic and environmental changes. This work provides the foundation for understanding the history of penguins occupation in Vestfold Hills, East Antarctica.

We report the rediscovery of the Cherry-throated Tanager Nemosia rourei in southern Espírito Santo, Brazil, in February 1998, and the first substantive observations of its behaviour, vocalizations and other aspects of its natural history. Approximately 10 individuals, occasionally in groups of up to five birds, were located in humid montane forest at 1,100 m a.s.l. at the privately owned “Fazenda Pindobas IV” (20°19′S, 41°17′W). This small population appears to be safe, as the property owners are preserving the remaining native forest there, and hope soon to register the land as a Private Natural Heritage Reserve (RPPN). The species probably also occurs at similar elevations on neighbouring fazendas. Past reports of the species are reviewed, and the accuracy of the type locality, “Muriaé, Minas Gerais” is re-evaluated. As a result, we suggest that our locality of rediscovery, Jatibocas, where Helmut Sick surely saw a group of eight birds in August 1941, and the Nova Lombardia (= Augusto Ruschi) Biological Reserve, where a single individual was certainly sighted by Derek Scott and others in October 1995, all in south-central Espírito Santo, be considered the only confirmed points of occurrence of the Cherry-throated Tanager.

The hydrographic basins of northern Espírito Santo comprises the systems of Itaúnas and São Mateus rivers. The present work is part of a series of studies on the fish fauna along Espírito Santo’s river basins. Forty-nine geo-referred points in rivers and rivulets of the area were evaluated, 20 in the Itaúnas basin and 28 in São Mateus basin. The environment and the taxonomic composition of the fish fauna were documented at every point, reporting a total of 83 species, including 47 freshwater species and 36 marine, belonging to 35 families and 11 orders. Among the freshwater fish species, the Siluriformes predominated, with 20 species, followed by the Characiformes, with 17 species. The Atlantic forest of northern Espírito Santo, known as “floresta de tabuleiros”, was originally composed of ombrophylous forest as well as swamps, coastal sand dunes, and mangroves. With the suppression of native forests, the region has suffered from desertification, and environmental conditions are similar to the northeastern semiarid region, where the run-off waters are dispersed or intermittent. The loss of environmental quality along river valleys is associated with the need to reestablish riverine aquatic conditions. Exotic species and risks of introductions need further studies in these areas. Rare or endangered species whose distributional range has diminished in response to environmental changes may function as biological indicators. Potentially new species are identified, and regional endemism and distribution patterns for freshwater fishes are discussed.

Pliocene and Quaternary Units in the Lower Mondego (Portugal) — The analysis of the relations betweenthe quaternary deposits in the Baixo Mondego, as well as their individualisation from others considered asPliocene, still suffer from insufficient reference marks necessary to guarantee equivalencies. The limitis now considered to be in the concert of the Cruz de Morouços Complex, where the Antanhol Formation(= Barracão Group, Upper Pliocene) and the Espírito Santo Conglomerate, equivalent to the GordosConglomerate (Lower Pleistocene), succeed to each other. From the Pleistocene assemblage andbeside the deposits directly associated to the evolution of Mondego (Ameal-Santo Varão and Tentugal-Gabrielos deposits), the deposits revealing upper littoral environments stand out, as the ArazedeSandstone, the Quiaios Sandstone, others deposits directly related with the Cabo Mondego morphogenesis, the Farol Deposits, fossiliferous and possibly from the Lower to Middle Pleistocene and theMurtinheira Deposits from the Upper Pleistocene. In turn the Condeixa Tuffs, with an accommodationspace of 24 Km2 , show an ordered succession of facies (Conglomerates — Cg; yellow mud — Pa, tuffs— Ta and Tc; grey mud with Lymnea — Pc) and an extended age from the Pleistocene (with Elephasantiquus and Hippopotamus incognitus in the base) possibly around the 400 Ka, to the Holocene (faciesPc with roman archaeological remains).

Emerging environmental fragility from the Santa Maria do Doce hydrographic basin - ES, Brazil A B S T R A C TThe study of the emerging environmental fragility is an important diagnostic tool, providing information closer to the environmental scenario of the area, helping in decision-making for the implementation of public policies. In order to intervene in human actions in favor of sustainability and environmental responsibility, it is essential to recognize the potential and weaknesses inherent in geographical spaces. The present work had as objective the determination and evaluation of the emerging environmental fragility in the basin of the Santa Maria do Doce river, in the state of Espírito Santo - Brazil. An integrated analysis of the environmental components was carried out, related to the relief, the characteristics of the soil and the different types of land use and cover that are interrelated and result in different levels of environmental fragility. The methodological model was based on tools already consolidated by academic research, including adaptations, according to the specificities of the study area, through the acquisition of geographic information plans made available by official agencies. The research also included field visits, on which occasion photographic records were taken at points in the study area. The cartographic products obtained proved to be effective in relating causes to man-nature effects, perceptible in the basin of the Santa Maria do Doce River. Environmental aspects were highlighted that should be prioritized when it comes to preserving the environment and the harmonious relationship between man and nature. It was possible to identify that in the basin there is a predominance of the class of medium environmental fragility. This fragility is mainly related to the use, cover and type of soil, indicating the existence of places with environmental disturbances and susceptible to damage caused by erosive processes. Such processes can promote soil loss and siltation of drainage channels, thus requiring greater attention from municipal managers in ordering the land occupation in the basin of the Santa Maria do Doce River. Keywords: Geotechnology, natural resources, territorial ordering.
