In 1884 I spent about a fortnight investigating the geological structure of these islands, and intended to have to a certain extent completed my studies at that time. Cholera was then raging at Campobasso on the mainland, and the islanders, not comprehending the curious habits of a travelling geologist, supposed I had been sent by the Government to spread the “Cholera Powder,” and requested me to leave the islands by the next steamer. This I naturally for safety's sake did, and opportunities for returning to the locality not having again presented themselves to me, and lest I should forget some of the interesting observations I then made, I think it desirable without further delay to record what I then saw. This is all the more important since my own observations differ considerably from those of the few other observers of the geology of these islands, or include facts which they do not mention in their writings.

I have for some years had serious doubts as to the correctness of the Map of the Geological Survey so for as it relatesto the supposed presence of Millstone-grit in the northern portion of the Bristol Coal-field in the neighbourhood of Kingswood Hill; and in a foot-note to a most valuable lecture delivered by my friend Mr. Robert Etheridge, F.G.S. (of the RoyalSchool of Mines) at the Bristol Mining School in 1857, and published in a volume of Lectures issued by that Institution, Ihad, so long ago as that year, expressed doubts as to the existence of Millstone-grit at the surface near kingswood. Sincethen I have had much greater opportunities of investigating the matter, having taken, with my partners, a large tract of mineral property in that district; and the results of those investigations thoroughly confirm the doubts I had previously entertained, and in fact fully satisfy my mind that what is shown as Millstone-grit on the Government Geological Map, as also on the valuable map lately published by Mr. William Sanders, F.R.S., of Bristol, is really nothing more than one of thesandstones (the ‘Holmes Rock’) so common in the Coal-measures proper, and developed on a grand scale in the Pennant-grit dividing the Upper and Lower Coal-series of all the South-western Coal-fields.

Kondisi tatanan tektonik dan geologi Aceh memiliki prospek untuk dilakukan eksplorasi dan pengembangan serta produksi Minyak dan Gas Bumi, baik di Wilayah Darat maupun di Wilayah Laut. Penemuan cadangan Minyak dan Gas baru di Aceh diharapkan dapat meningkatkan Penerimaan Negara dan Penerimaan Pemerintah Aceh dalam membangun infrastruktur dan Ketahanan Energi Aceh untuk melahirkan kembali industri-industri skala internasional. Ketentuan dalam Pasal 3 Peraturan Pemerintah Nomor 23 Tahun 2015 Tentang Pengelolaan Bersama Sumber Daya Alam Minyak dan Gas Bumi di Aceh, kewenangan pengelolaan Migas pada Wilayah Laut 12 (dua belas) sampai dengan 200 (dua ratus) mil laut yang merupakan Zona Ekonomi Eksklusif (ZEE) dikelola dan dilaksanakan Pemerintah Pusat dengan mengikutsertakan Pemerintah Aceh. Tafsir dalam 3 (tiga) Putusan Mahkamah Konstitusi No. 002/PUU-I/2003, 20/PUU-V/2007 dan Putusan Mahkamah Konstitusi No. 36/PUU-X/2012 tentang Uji Materiil Undang-Undang Nomor 22 Tahun 2001 tentang Minyak dan Gas Bumi terhadap Undang-Undang Dasar Negara Republik Indonesia Tahun 1945 bahwa penguasaan negara terhadap sumber daya alam dan cabang-cabang produksi yang penting bagi negara dan menguasai hajat hidup orang banyak dimaknai sebagai mandat yang harus dilaksanakan oleh pemerintah untuk mengadakan kebijakan (beleid), pengurusan (bestuursdaad), pengaturan (regelendaad), pengelolaan (beheersdaad), dan pengawasan (toezichthoudensdaad) untuk tujuan sebesar-besarnya kemakmuran rakyat.Conditions of tectonic and geological structure in Aceh prospect for explorating and producing Oil and Natural Gas, either in onshore or offshore. The discovery of Oil and Gas news reserved in Aceh is expected to increase the Central Government Take and Aceh Government Take to build infrastructure and Aceh’s Energy Security to regenerate industries on an international scale. The provisions in Article 3 of the Government Regulation Number 23 Year 2015 concerning Joint Management of Natural Resources Oil and Gas in Aceh, the joint management authority of Oil and Gas in Offshore 12 (twelve) to 200 (two hundreds) nautical miles of an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) is managed and held by the Central Government to include the Government Aceh. Commentary within 3 (three) Decision of Constitutional Court Number 002/PUU-I/2003, 20/PUU-V/2007 and Decision of the Constitutional Court Number 36/PUU-X/2012 of Judicial Review of Law Number 22 Year 2001 concerning Oil and Gas (Oil and Gas Law) Against the 1945 Constitution of the State of the Republic of Indonesia the meaning of “controlled by the state” must be comprehended to include the meaning of a wide-ranging state occupation, as a result of the people’s sovereignty concept. The people, collectively constructed by the 1945 Constitution, provide a mandate to the state to conduct policy (beleid) and functions of administration (bestuurdaad), regulation (regelendaad), management (beheersdaad) and supervision (toezichthoudensdaad) for the greatest prosperity of the people.

Darashaw Nosherwan Wadia enjoyed the honour of being the first geologist to be made a National Professor by the Government of India. He had been successively: Professor of Geology at Jammu in Kashmir, Officiating Superintendent of the Geological Survey of India, Government Mineralogist of Ceylon, Mineral Adviser to the Government of India, Director of the Indian Bureau of Mines, and, from 1949 until his death on 15 June 1969 at New Delhi, Geological Adviser to the Indian Atomic Energy Commission. During the concerted attack by the Geological Survey of India in the 1920s and 1930s on the unravelling (by geological mapping) of the geotectonics of the Himalayas, Wadia’s interpretation of the detailed stratigraphy and geological structure of the western part of that formidable mountain range was of outstanding value. He also made substantial contributions to the economic assessment of the geology of Ceylon and to the understanding of that country’s geomorphology.

The research was conducted in Bittuang, Tana Toraja Regency, South Sulawesi Province, as one of the geothermal prospect areas and targets for the initial stage of the Government exploration drilling program for the 2020-2024 period. One aspect of geothermal is the manifestation control structure as a fluid migration path from below the surface. Therefore, identification of existing structures in the Bittuang geothermal area was carried out and confirmed the surface geological structure contained in the Bittuang geothermal geological map. In determining the presence of a fault and knowing its characteristics such as the type of fault, the direction of the dip, and the magnitude of the dip of the fault, the gravity data is processed using the multi-level second vertical derivative (ML-SVD) method. To strengthen the interpretation, the results from the ML-SVD were matched with the data from the horizontal gradient (HG) method and the geological data of the structure of the study area. From this process, there are 27 faults in the Bittuang geothermal area, two of which are indicated as controlling faults for the manifestation of the Balla group and the Cepeng group. This research is expected to describe faults in the Bittuang geothermal area, which can support detailed exploration activities.

The education of researchers in Sweden is regulated by a nationwide reform implemented in 1969, which intended to limit doctoral programs to 4 years without diminishing quality. In an audit performed by the government in 1996, however, it was concluded that the reform had failed. Some 80% of the doctoral students admitted had dropped out, and only 1% finished their PhD degree within the stipulated 4 years. In an attempt to determine the causes of this situation, we singled out a social-science department at a major Swedish university and interviewed those doctoral students who had dropped out of the program. This department was found to be representative of the nationwide figures found in the audit. The students interviewed had all completed at least 50% of their PhD studies and had declared themselves as dropouts from this department. We conclude that the entire research education was characterized by a laissez-faire attitude where supervisors were nominated but abdicated. To correct this situation, we suggest that a learning alliance should be established between the supervisor and the student. At the core of the learning alliance is the notion of mutually forming a platform form which work can emerge in common collaboration. The learning alliance implies a contract for work, stating its goals, the tasks to reach these goals, and the interpersonal bonding needed to give force and endurance to the endeavor. Constant scrutiny of this contract and a mutual concern for the learning alliance alone can contribute to its strength.
