The global temporal stability of three-dimensional compressible flow about a yawed parabolic body of infinite span is investigated using an iterative eigenvalue technique in combination with direct numerical simulations. The computed global spectrum provides a comprehensive picture of the temporal perturbation dynamics of the flow, and a wide and rich variety of modes has been uncovered for the investigated parameter choices: stable and unstable boundary-layer modes, different types of stable and unstable acoustic modes, and stable wavepacket modes have been found. A parameter study varying the spanwise perturbation wavenumber and the sweep Reynolds number reproduced a preferred spanwise length scale and a critical Reynolds number for a boundary-layer or acoustic instability. Convex leading-edge curvature has been found to have a strongly stabilizing effect on boundary-layer modes but only a weakly stabilizing effect on acoustic modes. Furthermore, for certain parameter choices, the acoustic modes have been found to dominate the boundary-layer modes.

The leading-edge boundary layer (LEBL) in the front part of swept airplane wings is prone to three-dimensional subcritical instability, which may lead to bypass transition. The resulting increase of airplane drag and fuel consumption implies a negative environmental impact. In the present paper, we present a temporal biglobal secondary stability analysis (SSA) and direct numerical simulations (DNS) of this flow to investigate a subcritical transition mechanism. The LEBL is modelled by the swept Hiemenz boundary layer (SHBL), with and without wall suction. We introduce a pair of steady, counter-rotating, streamwise vortices next to the attachment line as a generic primary disturbance. This generates a high-speed streak, which evolves slowly in the streamwise direction. The SSA predicts that this flow is unstable to secondary, time-dependent perturbations. We report the upper branch of the secondary neutral curve and describe numerous eigenmodes located inside the shear layers surrounding the primary high-speed streak and the vortices. We find secondary flow instability at Reynolds numbers as low as$Re\approx 175$, i.e. far below the linear critical Reynolds number$Re_{crit}\approx 583$of the SHBL. This secondary modal instability is confirmed by our three-dimensional DNS. Furthermore, these simulations show that the modes may grow until nonlinear processes lead to breakdown to turbulent flow for Reynolds numbers above$Re_{tr}\approx 250$. The three-dimensional mode shapes, growth rates, and the frequency dependence of the secondary eigenmodes found by SSA and the DNS results are in close agreement with each other. The transition Reynolds number$Re_{tr}\approx 250$at zero suction and its increase with wall suction closely coincide with experimental and numerical results from the literature. We conclude that the secondary instability and the transition scenario presented in this paper may serve as a possible explanation for the well-known subcritical transition observed in the leading-edge boundary layer.

The onset of transition in the leading-edge region of a swept blunt body depends crucially on the stability characteristics of the flow. Modelling this flow configuration by swept compressible flow around a parabolic body, a global approach is taken to extract pertinent stability information via a DNS-based iterative eigenvalue solver. Global modes combining features from boundary-layer and acoustic instabilities are presented. A parameter study, varying the spanwise disturbance wavenumber and the sweep Reynolds number, showed the existence of unstable boundary-layer and acoustic modes. The corresponding neutral curve displays two overlapping regions of exponential growth and two critical Reynolds numbers, one for boundary-layer instabilities and one for acoustic instabilities. The employed global approach establishes a first neutral curve, delineating stable from unstable parameter configurations, for the complex flow about a swept parabolic body with corresponding implications for swept leading-edge flow.

The three-dimensional boundary layer on a swept wing can support different types of hydrodynamic instability. Here attention is focused on the so-called ‘spanwise instability’ problem which occurs when the attachment-line boundary layer on the leading edge becomes unstable to Tollmien–Schlichting waves. In order to gain insight into the interactions that are important in that problem a simplified basic state is considered. This simplified flow corresponds to the swept attachment-line boundary layer on an infinite flat plate. The basic flow here is an exact solution of the Navier–Stokes equations and its stability to two-dimensional waves propagating along the attachment line can be considered exactly at finite Reynolds number. This has been done in the linear and weakly nonlinear regimes by Hall, Malik & Poll (1984) and Hall & Malik (1986). Here the corresponding problem is studied for oblique waves and their interaction with two-dimensional waves is investigated. In fact oblique modes cannot be described exactly at finite Reynolds number so it is necessary to make a high-Reynolds-number approximation and use triple-deck theory. It is shown that there are two types of oblique wave which, if excited, cause the destabilization of the two-dimensional mode and the breakdown of the disturbed flow at a finite distance from the leading edge. First a low-frequency mode closely related to the viscous stationary crossflow mode discussed by Hall (1986) and MacKerrell (1987) is a possible cause of breakdown. Secondly a class of oblique wave with frequency comparable with that of the two-dimensional mode is another cause of breakdown. It is shown that the relative importance of the modes depends on the distance from the attachment line.

Theoretical and an experimental research results of the disturbances development in a swept wing boundary layer are presented at Mach number М = 2. In experiments development of natural and small amplitude controllable disturbances downstream was studied. Experiments were carried out on a swept wing model with a lenticular profile at a zero attack angle. The swept angle of a leading edge was 40°. Wave parameters of moving disturbances were determined. In frames of the linear theory and an approach of the local self-similar mean flow the stability of a compressible three-dimensional boundary layer is studied. Good agreement of the theory with experimental results for transversal scales of unstable vertices of the secondary flow was obtained. However the calculated amplification rates differ from measured values considerably. This disagreement is explained by the nonlinear processes observed in experiment

Both slipstream deformation and viscous effects are factors that affect the performance of a rotating marine propeller but neither of them has been properly treated in most of the current lifting-surface methods and surface panel theories. With the introduction of a partial roll-up wake model that is flexible to various cases of propeller geometry and loading condition, this paper presents a vortex-lattice method that can improve propeller performance prediction especially at heavy loading conditions. Some observations on the calculation of the blade leading-edge suction force and how to deduct it to account for the viscous drag increasing are given. The scale effect of propeller performance can be readily predicted by the quasi-three-dimensional boundary-layer calculation presented in this paper. Some patterns of the limiting streamlines on blade surfaces are also illustrated and compared with experimental results.

The present study compares measured and computed heat transfer coefficients for high-speed boundary layer nozzle flows under engine Reynolds number conditions (U∞=230 ÷ 880 m/s, Re* = 0.37 ÷ 1.07 × 106). Experimental data have been obtained by heat transfer measurements in a two-dimensional, nonsymmetric, convergent–divergent nozzle. The nozzle wall is convectively cooled using water passages. The coolant heat transfer data and nozzle surface temperatures are used as boundary conditions for a three-dimensional finite-element code, which is employed to calculate the temperature distribution inside the nozzle wall. Heat transfer coefficients along the hot gas nozzle wall are derived from the temperature gradients normal to the surface. The results are compared with numerical heat transfer predictions using the low-Reynolds-number k–ε turbulence model by Lam and Bremhorst. Influence of compressibility in the transport equations for the turbulence properties is taken into account by using the local averaged density. The results confirm that this simplification leads to good results for transonic and low supersonic flows.

The control of subsonic high lift induced separation on airfoil may improve the flight envelope of current aircraft or even simplify the complex and heavy high-lift devices on commercial airframes. Until now, synthetic jets have proved a really interesting efficiency to delay or remove even leading-edge located separated areas on high-lift configuration but are not efficient for real scale aircrafts. In case of pressure-like separation (i.e. from trailing-edge), synthetic jets can be replaced by so the called “Vortex Generator Jets” which create strong longitudinal vortices that increase mixing in inner boundary layer and consequently the skin friction coefficient is increased to prevent separation. In this study, numerical simulations were undertaken on a generic three dimensional flat plate in order to quantify the effect of the longitudinal vortices on the natural skin friction coefficient. Both counter and co-rotative devices were tested at different exhaust velocities and distances between each others. Finally co-rotative vortex generators jets were tested on a three dimensional generic airfoil ONERA D. Results show a delay of the separation occurence but this solution does not seem to be as robust as synthetic jets. The study of jets spacing with respect to the efficiency of the devices shows a maximum for a given ratio of spacing to exhaust velocity.

SummaryThis paper presents the results of some calculations of the incompressible turbulent boundary layer on an infinite yawed wing. A discussion is made of the effects of increasing lift coefficient, and increasing Reynolds number, on the displacement thickness, and on the magnitude and direction of the skin friction. The effects of the state of the boundary layer (laminar or turbulent) along the attachment line are also considered.A study is made to determine whether the behaviour of the boundary layer can adequately be predicted by a two-dimensional calculation. It is concluded that there is no simple way to do this (as is provided, in the laminar case, by the principle of independence). However, with some modification, a two-dimensional calculation can be made to give an acceptable numerical representation of the chordwise components of the flow.

Recent Researches have led to some possible explanations for thin aerofoil stalling behaviour. Apart from the Owen Klanfer criterion these are the reverse flow breakdown hypothesis of McGregor and Wallis's turbulent separation theory.This note describes simple theoretical boundary layer calculations which indicate the feasibility of Wallis's hypothesis. In addition the results of some experiments on a thin two-dimensional aerofoil with various leading edge configurations with Reynolds number, based on model chord, of 1.8 million and 1 million support either of these hypotheses, depending on the leading edge configuration. It is concluded that thin aerofoil stall can occur broadly, through either of the suggested mechanisms, depending on conditions in the nose region.
