Combustion instability is investigated in the case of a multiple inlet combustor with dump. It is shown that low-frequency instabilities are acoustically coupled and occur at the eigenfrequencies of the system. Using spark-schlieren and a special phase-average imaging of the C2-radical emission, the fluid-mechanical processes involved in a vortex-driven mode of instability are investigated. The phase-average images provide maps of the local non-steady heat release. From the data collected on the combustor the processes of vortex shedding, growth, interactions and burning are described. The phases between the pressure, velocity and heat-release fluctuations are determined. The implications of the global Rayleigh criterion are verified and a mechanism for low-frequency vortex-driven instabilities is proposed.

An experimental study was performed to investigate the combustion instability characteristics of swirl-stabilized combustors. A premixed gas composed of ethylene and air was burned under various flow and geometric conditions. Experiments were conducted by changing the inlet mean velocity, equivalence ratio, swirler vane angle, and combustor length. Two dynamic pressure sensors, a hot-wire anemometer, and a photomultiplier tube were installed to detect the pressure oscillations, velocity perturbations, and heat release fluctuations in the inlet and combustion chambers, respectively. An ICCD camera was used to capture the time-averaged flame structure. The objective was to understand the relationship between combustion instability and the Rayleigh criterion/the flame structure. When combustion instability occurred, the pressure oscillations were in-phase with the heat release oscillations. Even if the Rayleigh criterion between the pressure and heat release oscillations was satisfied, stable combustion with low pressure fluctuations was possible. This was explained by analyzing the dynamic flow and combustion data. The root-mean-square value of the heat release fluctuations was observed to predict the combustion instability region better than that of the inlet velocity fluctuations. The bifurcation of the flame structure was a necessary condition for combustion instability in this combustor. The results shed new insight into combustion instability in swirl-stabilized combustors.

Active instability control was applied to an atmospheric swirl-stabilized premixed combustor using open loop and closed loop control schemes. Actuation was realised by two on-off valves allowing for symmetric and asymmetric modulation of the premix fuel flow while maintaining constant time averaged overall fuel mass flow. Pressure and heat release fluctuations in the combustor as well as NOx, CO and CO2 emissions in the exhaust were recorded. In the open loop circuit the heat release response of the flame was first investigated during stable combustion. For symmetric fuel modulation the dominant frequency in the heat release response was the modulation frequency, while for asymmetric modulation it was its first harmonic. In stable open loop control a reduction of NOx emissions due to fuel modulation of up to 19% was recorded. In the closed loop mode phase-shift control was applied while triggering the valves at the dominant oscillation frequency as well as at its second subharmonic. Both, open and closed loop control schemes were able to successfully control a low-frequency combustion instability, while showing only a small increase in NOx emissions compared to, for example, secondary fuel modulation. Using premixed open loop fuel modulation, attenuation was best when modulating the fuel at frequencies different from the dominant instability frequency and its subharmonic. The performance of asymmetric fuel modulation was generally slightly better than for symmetric modulation in terms of suppression levels as well as emissions. Suppression of the instability’s pressure rms level of up to 15.7 dB was recorded.

Lean premixed combustion is widely used in recent years as a method to achieve the environmental standards with regard to NOx emission. In spite of the mentioned advantage, premixed combustion systems, with equivalence ratios less than one, are susceptible to the combustion instability. To study the lean combustion instability, by experiments, one premixed combustion setup, equipped with reactant supplying system, is designed and manufactured in Amirkabir University of Technology. In this research, gaseous propane is introduced as fuel and several experiments are performed at nearly atmospheric pressure, with equivalence ratios within the range of 0.7 to 1.5. In this experiments fuel mass flow rate is varied between 2 and 4 gr/s. Unstable operating condition has been observed in combustion chamber when equivalence ratio is less than one. To distinguish the combustion instability for various operating conditions, probability density functions, spectral diagrams, and space distribution of pressure oscillations, along with Rayleigh Criterion, are utilized. Accordingly, effect of equivalence ratio on stabilizing the unstable combustion system is investigated. Moreover, convective delay time is calculated for all experiments and the results are compared with Rayleigh Criterion. This comparison has shown good agreement the experimental results and Rayleigh Criterion. Finally, stability limits are identified based on inlet mass flow rate and equivalence ratio.

The effects of plasma on the combustion instability of a methane swirling premixed flame under acoustic excitation were investigated. The flame image of OH planar laser-induced fluorescence and the fluctuation of flame transfer function showed the mechanism of plasma in combustion instability. The results show that when the acoustic frequency is less than 100 Hz, the gain in flame transfer function gradually increases with the frequency; when the acoustic frequency is 100~220 Hz, the flame transfer function shows a trend of first decreasing and then increasing with acoustic frequency. When the acoustic frequency is greater than 220 Hz, the flame transfer function gradually decreases with acoustic frequency. When the voltage exceeds the critical discharge value of 5.3 kV, the premixed gas is ionized and the heat release rate increases significantly, thereby reducing the gain in flame transfer function and enhancing flame stability. Plasma causes changes in the internal recirculation zone, compression, and curling degree of the flame, and thereby accelerates the rate of chemical reaction and leads to an increase in flame heat release rate. Eventually, the concentration of OH radicals changes, and the heat release rate changes accordingly, which ultimately changes the combustion instability of the swirling flame.

Abstract In this work, the growth regime of combustion instability was studied by analyzing 10 kHz OH planar laser induced fluorescence (PLIF) images through a combination of dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) and spectral proper orthogonal decomposition (SPOD) methods. Combustion instabilities were induced in a mesoscale burner array through an external speaker at an imposed perturbation frequency of 210 Hz. During the transient onset of combustion instabilities, 10 kHz OH PLIF imaging was employed to capture spatially and temporally resolved flame images. Increased acoustic perturbations prevented flame reignition in the central recirculation zone and eventually led to the flame being extinguished inwards from the outer burner array elements. Coherent modes and their growth rates were obtained from DMD spectral analyses of high-speed OH PLIF images. Positive growth rates were observed at the forcing frequency during the growth regime. Coherent structures, closely associated with thermoacoustic instability, were extracted using an appropriate SPOD filter operation to identify mode structures that correlate to physical phenomena such as shear layer instability and flame response to longitudinal acoustic forcing. Overall, a combination of DMD and SPOD was shown to be effective at analyzing the onset and propagation of combustion instabilities, particularly under transient burner operations.

The driving mechanism of pulsations in gas turbine combustors depends on a complex interaction between flow field, chemistry, heat release, and acoustics. Experimental data on all these factors are therefore required to obtain insight into the coupling mechanisms during a pulsation period. In order to develop a comprehensive experimental database to support a phenomenological understanding and to provide validation data for numerical simulation, a standard burner for optical investigations was established that exhibits strong self-excited oscillations. The burner was a swirl-stabilized nonpremixed model combustor designed for gas turbine applications and operated using methane as fuel at atmospheric pressure. It was mounted in a combustion chamber, which provides almost unobstructed optical access. The periodic combustion instabilities were studied by a variety of phase-resolved laser-based diagnostic techniques, locked to the frequency of the dominant pressure oscillation. Measurement techniques used were LDV for velocity measurements, planar laser-induced fluorescence for imaging of CH and OH radicals, and laser Raman scattering for the determination of the major species concentrations, temperature, and mixture fraction. The phase-resolved measurements revealed significant variations of all measured quantities in the vicinity of the nozzle exit, which trailed off quickly with increasing distance. A strong correlation of the heat release rate and axial velocity at the nozzle was observed, while the mean mixture fraction as well as the temperature in the periphery of the flame is phase shifted with respect to axial velocity oscillations. A qualitative interpretation of the experimental observations is given, which will help to form a better understanding of the interaction between flow field, mixing, heat release, and temperature in pulsating reacting flows, particularly when accompanied by corresponding CFD simulations that are currently underway.

Lean premixed flames applied in modern gas turbines leads to reduce NOx emissions, but at the same time they are more susceptible to combustion instabilities than diffusion flames. These oscillations cause pressure fluctuations with high amplitudes and unacceptable noise as well as the risk of component or even engine failure. They can lead to pockets of fuel being formed in the mixing chamber and to bad mixing, which leads to increase in emissions. This paper reports the successful decoupling of the pressure and heat release inside the combustion chamber of a matrix burner using two actuation techniques. This led to the successful attenuation of the dominant instability modes occurring inside the combustor of the matrix burner. In the first case, acoustic forcing was used to decouple the pressure and the heat release inside the combustor. This was achieved by using a loudspeaker to modulate the primary air mass flow. This was followed by using acoustic forcing in CFD to decouple the pressure and heat release inside the combustor. For the action of the loudspeaker, sinusoidal forcing was used to mimic the modulation action of the diaphragm of the loudspeaker. In the second case, a fast gaseous “on-off” injector was used to modulate the primary fuel mass flow. After this, pilot fuel modulation was used to stabilize the flame. The control law governing the primary and pilot fuel modulation is discussed in details. The effect of open loop control on NOx emissions in the burner is also reported and discussed.
