AbstractTwo species of palaeacanthocephalan from Solea bleekeri from estuarine waters in Cape Province, South Africa, are described. Rhaidinorhynchus capensis sp. npv. differs from its closest relatives in having a smaller proboscis and in having body-spines arranged in a single field. Longicollum sp. innom., described from a single male specimen, differs from other species of the genus in having a basal row of large proboscis hooks and in having a recurved proboscis-sac.The two species of palaeacanthocephalans described in this report were collected from Solea bleekeri Boulenger, 1898, in estuarine waters in the southern-most region of Cape Province and donated to the British Museum (Natural History) by Professor John H. Day of the Zoology Department, University of Cape Town. Co-infestations did not occur, nor were both species found in the same immediate geographical area. The coastal region of Cape Province, from Algoa Bay in the east, to Cape Agulhas or Cape Point in the west, constitutes, according to Ekman (1953), an independent zoogeographical province, and, therefore, data on the parasitic worms of the marine fish of this region, which at the moment are exceedingly meagre, may be of interest and importance as indicators of the affinities of the fish stocks inhabiting this area.

A Re-Examination of the type-specimens of “Sclerostoma” clathratum Baird from the African elephant, which are in the British Museum, has led to a rather interesting discovery. The material was contained in two bottles, labelled in Baird's own handwriting. One bore the name “Sclerostoma clathratum Baird,” and contained a single male specimen of the form now known as Grammocephalus clathratus. The other bottle was labelled “Sclerostoma clathratum Baird, ♀,” and proved to contain worms of both sexes and of quite a different type from Grammocephalus.

The South African micropterigid genus Agrionympha Meyrick, 1921 has long been known from a single male specimen and very few females with three named species. This revision, based on more recent discoveries, brings the total named species to nine, by the addition of A. fuscoapicella sp. nov., A. jansella sp. nov., A. karoo sp. nov., A. kroonella sp. nov., A. pseudovari sp. nov., A. sagittella sp. nov., and notes the presence of a tenth species, represented only by two males in alcohol. The South Afrrican micropterigid fauna is thus quite diverse although, apart from the presence of another as yet undescribed genus, turns out to be a phenetically tightly-knit assemblage of highly conservative species. This revision provides a morphological description of males and females and includes larval features and a key to species. The micropterigid fauna of South Africa together with recently discovered taxa from Madagascar comprise part of what is regarded as the ‘southern sabatincoid’ lineage within the family—a weakly supported clade also including representatives from Australia, Chile, Ecuador, and Costa Rica. The survival of these small archaic rainforest moths in the face of increasing aridity is discussed.

‘The Final “Thank You”’ uses the work of Jacques Derrida and Friedrich Nietzsche to think the occasion of the 1995 rugby World Cup, hosted by the newly democratic South Africa. This paper deploys Nietzsche's Zarathustra to critique how a figure such as Nelson Mandela is understood as a ‘Superman’ or an ‘Overhuman’ in the moment of political transition. The philosophical focus of the paper, however, turns on the ‘thank yous’ exchanged by the white South African rugby captain, François Pienaar, and the black president at the event of the Springbok victory. It is the value, and the proximity and negation, of the ‘thank yous’ – the relation of one to the other – that constitutes the core of the article. 1

The plant bug Macrotylus (Alloeonycha) xantii Günther, 2018, is reported as new to Portugal from the Algarve. This species was described from a single male specimen captured on dry grass in a calcareous area of Andalusia, Spain. The female was previously unknown, so the presence of both sexes in reasonable numbers on sparsely vegetated sandy substrate in Portugal extends its known range and habitat preferences, and has enabled the female to be described.

In South Africa, much of the forest biome is vulnerable to human-induced disturbance. The forest-dwelling butterfly Charaxes xiphares occidentalis is naturally confined to a small forest region in the south-western Cape, South Africa. Most of the remaining habitat of this species is within a fragmented agricultural matrix. Furthermore, this geographical area is also heavily invaded by alien plants, especially Acacia mearnsii. We investigated how C. x. occidentalis behaviourally responds to different habitat conditions in the landscape. We were particularly interested in touring, patrolling and settling behaviour as a conservation proxy for preference of a certain habitat configuration in this agricultural matrix. Remnant forest patches in the agricultural matrix showed fewer behavioural incidents than in a reference protected area. Moreover, dense stands of A. mearnsii negatively influenced the incidence and settling pattern of this butterfly across the landscape, with fewer tree settlings associated with more heavily invaded forest patches. This settling pattern was predominantly seen in female butterflies. We also identified specific trees that were settled upon for longer periods by C. x. occidentalis. Distance to a neighbouring patch and patch size influenced behavioural incidences, suggesting that further patch degradation and isolation could be detrimental to this butterfly. Conservation implications: We highlight the importance of clearing invasive tree species from vulnerable forest ecosystems and identify key tree species to consider in habitat conservation and rehabilitation programmes for this butterfly. We also suggest retaining as much intact natural forest as possible. This information should be integrated in local biodiversity management plans.

The male of Pardosa jeniseica, collected in the East-Kazakhstan Area, was first illustrated in Eskov & Marusik (1995). The authorship of the species was given as “Zyuzin, 1991”, because A.A. Zyuzin informed the authors in 1990 that a description of the species was in press. Because no such description ever appeared the authorship was given to Eskov & Marusik, and a single male specimen from East-Kazakhstan is now considered to be the holotype. It is kept in Zoological Museum of the Moscow State University. Esyunin et al. (1999) illustrated and described a female from the Urals thought to be conspecific with P. jeniseica. Conspecifity of the illustrated specimen with P. jeniseica was doubted by Marusik et al. (2000). Kronestedt (2013) was the first to illustrate the epigyne of P. jeniseica and Azarkina & Trilikauskas (2013) provided both verbal and illustrated descriptions of the female, and its epigyne and endogyne. Both sexes taken from one locality were never depicted, nor was peculiar pubescence of the male's leg I. Therefore, I decided to provide detailed illustrations and a verbal description of this species based on specimens from the place considered to be the type locality.Specimens were photographed at the Zoological Museum (University of Turku, Finland) with a Canon EOS 7D camera attached to an Olympus SZX16 stereomicroscope and a SEM JEOL JSM-5200 scanning microscope. Digital images were montaged using Helicon focus 3.10 image stacking software. All measurements are given in millimeters. The following abbreviations are used for leg segments: Fe femur, Pa patella, Ti tibia, Mt metatarsus, Ta tarsus; leg spination abbreviations: d dorsal, p prolateral, r retrolateral, v ventral. Material used in this study is deposited in the Moscow State University (ZMMU) and Zoological Museum of the University of Turku (ZMUT). A historically white school in a city setting in South Africa is faced with the demand from a newly democratically elected government to transform and become an agent of change in making its pupil profile more representative of the demographics of the country as a whole. This demand is driven by significant national contextual change from a position where schools had an allocated catchment based upon geographical area and ethnic group (before 1994) to a market oriented approach where every school must compete for pupil recruitment to ensure survival whilst also adhering to the government requirement to demonstrate a willingness to change existing mono-cultural pupil profiles to multi ethnic profiles and establish non-sexism and non-racialism as the dominating culture.

Problems with the Bible in reformed theology: reflections from a Christian philosophical perspective The motivation for undertaking this investigation is the present tension in the reformed theology and in the reformed churches in South Africa. In spite of the fact that the reformed tradition confesses the authority of the Bible, theologians and church leaders are at the moment divided on how to view and interpret the Scriptures. They disagree about the message of God’s Word in the case of topical issues, for instance whether women should be allowed in ecclesiastical offices or on what the Bible has to say about homosexuality. The author is of the opinion that these tensions in the same church are caused, not only by different methods of interpreting the Bible but, at a much deeper level, also by the way in which one views the Bible according to different worldviews. In trying to resolve these problems and the resulting conflict of opinion, a Christian philosophical approach will be taken instead of the current theological efforts.

Specimens of monstrilloid copepods collected and described in the early 20 th century by G.O. Sars from the coasts of Norway and deposited in the Sars Collection (University of Oslo) were re-examined. Monstrilla leucopis Sars, 1921 was described based on female and male specimens, but the species was later synonymized with M. conjunctiva Giesbrecht, 1902 by several authors. Females of this species were analyzed and compared with closely related congeners, particularly with M. conjunctiva. This analysis includes the description of previously unknown morphological details following upgraded descriptive standards in this group. Evidence was found to support the notion that the female type specimens from Kvalø, Norway represent a distinct species; thus, M. leucopis is redescribed and reinstated as a valid taxon. Previous tropical records of female M. conjunctiva are questionable, but differences with M. leucopis can be found in body and antennule proportions, the structure of the genital spines and fifth legs, and most probably, their geographical ranges. Furthermore, M. leucopis has a modified thick-walled seta on the endopods of legs 2–4, so far a unique character among monstrilloids. The single male specimen labeled as M. leucopis in the Sars Collection was also examined and it is not the male of this species as depicted by G.O. Sars (1921). It is in fact a male of M. longiremis Giesbrecht, 1893, a species for which a short supplementary description and taxonomic comments are also provided herein. The male of M. leucopis also shares some important characters with that of M. conjunctiva, but also with another male specimen that was questionably assigned to the latter species; this male probably represents an undescribed species.
