Is this the Varronian moment? After decades of comparative neglect, especially in Anglophone scholarship, the late republican polymath is suddenly everywhere. There are conferences and conference panels dedicated to his work, some subsequently published as edited volumes. Varro is the subject of dissertations and monographs, either on his own or as a prime exhibit in discussions of such diverse subjects as ancient agricultural writing and late republican religious scholarship. Much needed new editions of his work have appeared or are in preparation. Thus we can look forward to Robert Rodgers' OCT of De re rustica, Giorgio Piras’ Teubner of De lingua Latina and a Loeb edition of Varronian fragments by Joseph McAlhany.

Sistema Prisional. For this, we conducted a research in the thesis bank of the Cover Portal and the Brazilian Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations. From the data collection, we identified that work involving education in the prison system is still scarce, mainly, related to reading practices. This situation can be aggravated, above all, by the false effectiveness of policies that govern these contexts. Keywords: Reading. Prison System. The abbreviation-symbols of the Romans, found in ancient uncial MSS., may be roughly divided into three classes:(1) Those peculiar to juristic writing, e.g. R.P. ‘res priuata’ (any case), Q.D.R.A. ‘qua de re agitur.’ They are properly called ‘notae iuris.’ They abound in the famous Verona MS. of Gaius(uncial, ‘fifth century’).(2) A few used in histories, etc., e.g. R.P. 'respublica' (any case), Q. ‘Quintus’ (any case). Valerius Probus, who compiled a manual of ancient Notae, calls this class ‘notae publicae’. They appear in such MSS. as the codex Puteanus of Livy (uncial, ‘fifth century’); and since they have been transferred into modern editions of the Latin historians, etc., no one is at a loss to interpret them nowadays, although they puzzled mediaeval scribes.(3) Symbols of ordinary words of frequent occurrence in any type of literature, e.g. Q. ‘que.’ It is this class which is the subject of this article.

If death is a harm then it is a harm that cannot be experienced. The proponent of death’s harm must therefore provide an answer to Epicurus, when he says that ‘death, is nothing to us, since when we are, death is not present, and when death is present, then we are not’. In this paper I respond to the two main ways philosophers have attempted to answer Epicurus, regarding the subject of death’s harm: either directly or via analogy. The direct way argues that there is a truth-maker (or difference-maker) for death’s harm, namely in virtue of the intrinsic value the subject’s life would have had if they had not died. The analogy argues that there are cases analogous to death, where the subject is harmed although they experience no pain as a result. I argue that both accounts beg the question against the Epicurean: the first by presupposing that one can be harmed while experiencing no displeasure as a result and the second by conflating a de re with a de dicto reading of death’s harm. Thus, I argue, until better arguments are provided, one is best to agree with Epicurus and those who follow him that death is not a harm.

This article looks at the literary dimension that emerges from Georges Bataille, à perte de vue, a film made by Labarthe in 1997 for the “Un siècle d'écrivains” collection. It will analyze the resolutely literary narrative device put in place by Labarthe in his film. The narrative structure, presented in the film, will be studied and the elements that contribute to the emergence of the literary will be evoked. Labarthe proposes an approach to the fundamental concepts inherent in the fictions of Bataille, which will be the subject of reflection in order to highlight the director's work of re-creating the literary universe of Bataille. The objective of this article is to show that the narrativization strategies that Labarthe deploys in his filmic narrative contribute to restoring Bataille's literality.

In Brutus § 274 Cicero writes: The style of M. Calidius was pure and limpid; he used no word that was ‘ durum aut insolens aut humile aut longius ductum. In the last phrase, which I give in the MSS reading, editors have adopted for et ubi the suggestion of Corradus id ubi. There seem to be two objections to it: (I) poor sense, (2) doubtful syntax. Impelled by these objections but pressing overmuch the relevancy of a somewhat similar phrase (De Fin. But the context shows that Cicero is describing the language of Calidius, not his mental powers; so a reference to keenness in perceiving the subject of dispute is not relevant. In § 276 the passage proceeds to enumerate the formal qualities of his style:. ‘ accedebat ordo rerum plenus artis, actio liberalis, totumque dicendi placidum et sanum genus.’

Abstract This article has two main aims. First, it will defend an ‘attitudinal’ account of pleasure, that is, an account of what it is that makes an experience pleasurable for a subject that explains it in terms of a certain kind of de re desire that the subject has towards that experience. Second, in doing so, the article aims to further our understanding of unconscious desires, and of what the subjects of such desires can be. The article begins by introducing two existing accounts of what makes an experience pleasurable. It then offers a diagnosis of a recent objection to attitudinal accounts from Bramble and existing responses from attitudinal theorists, arguing that the two positions are currently at a stalemate. After this, I argue for the possible existence of unknowable and unconscious de re desires, and show how such desires provide the best defence of such ‘attitudinal’ accounts.

Notes of St. Augustine on joy (gaudium) are based on both the philosophical tradition and the Bible. Bishop distinguishes the true joy from the false one. These two types of joy differ in the subject of happiness and its quality. True joy is purely spiritual (gaudium spiritale), aimed to eternal life, while the false joy turns to the worldly possessions. In this life is possible the joy that comes from hope (gaudium de spe), a real joy (gaudium de re) meet only in the future life. Everyday joy, which is consistent with reason and truth, leads to the eternal joy. The true joy arises when one attains the highest goal. It meets in God and is permanent.

The paper will show parts of a shape grammar that uses as corpus the Alberti`s treatise and buildings to see possible influence in Portuguese Architecture. The column systematisation grammar is a grammar of detail and some of the different elements of the column system (base, shaft, capital and entablature) may be connected with different orders (Doric, Ionic, Corinthian and Composite) showing different combinations. This system may be applied to generate some buildings namely Rucellai Loggia and palace facade, Santa Maria Novella Facade, Santa Andrea and specifically the subject of this paper the central nave longitudinal façade of the church São Vicente de Fora in Lisboa. Finally transformations rules are analysed mapping Alberti`s treatise influence in the work of the authors of the generated building.

Abstract: It is a matter of presenting, through an articulation between philosophy and literature, the ethical-political question that the problem of animal alterity poses. For this, I first present a partial reading on the various lectures given by Jacques Derrida on the subject. Conferences that have been assembled on the title “The Animal that therefore I am “, a true essay for a future philosophy capable of (re) writing animality from its own tradition. In this rereading, I propose that the main result of the Derridian text is a replacement of the ethical question of violence over the other, as well as a political reflection on the anthropocentric character of modernity. Having done that, I turn to an analysis of a short story by Clarice Lispector entitled “O crime do professor de matemática”. Short story which consists of an acute report on the relationship between man and animal. More than a simple exercise of exemplification, it is a matter of thinking with literature a theme that has historically been cloistered by philosophical discourse in the binarism proper to what Derrida calls the “cogito tradition.”Keywords: Derrida; Lispector; animal studies; humanism; desconstruction.
