AbstractWe discuss bounds on neutrino masses using an analysis based on direct measurements, cosmological bounds, oscillation experiments, the solar neutrino puzzle and theoretical considerations on neutrino decays. We present four possible solutions for the mass range of the three neutrino flavors. We outline experiments which can distinguish among these solutions and discuss their implications for the cosmological dark matter problem.

We show that in a class of non-supersymmetric left–right extensions of the Standard Model (SM), the lightest right-handed neutrino (RHN) can play the role of thermal Dark Matter (DM) in the Universe for a wide mass range from TeV to PeV. Our model is based on the gauge group [Formula: see text] in which a heavy copy of the SM fermions is introduced and the stability of the RHN DM is guaranteed by an automatic [Formula: see text] symmetry present in the leptonic sector. In such models, the active neutrino masses are obtained via the type-II seesaw mechanism. We find a lower bound on the RHN DM mass of order TeV from relic density constraints, as well as a unitarity upper bound in the multi-TeV to PeV scale, depending on the entropy dilution factor. The RHN DM could be made long-lived by soft-breaking of the [Formula: see text] symmetry and provides a concrete example of decaying DM interpretation of the PeV neutrinos observed at IceCube.

The present status of the problem of neutrino mass, mixing and neutrino oscillations is briefly summarized. The evidence for oscillations of atmospheric neutrinos found recently in the Super-Kamiokande experiment is discussed. Indications in favor of neutrino oscillations obtained in solar neutrino experiments and in the accelerator LSND experiment are also considered. Implications of existing neutrino oscillation data for neutrino masses and mixing are discussed.

Neutrino oscillations in a core-collapse supernova may be responsible for the observed rapid motions of pulsars. Given the present bounds on the neutrino masses, the pulsar kicks require a sterile neutrino with mass 2–20 keV and a small mixing with the active neutrinos. The same particle can be the cosmological dark matter. Its existence can be confirmed the by the X-ray telescopes if they detect a 1–10 keV photon line from the decays of the relic sterile neutrinos. In addition, one may be able to detect gravity waves from a pulsar being accelerated by neutrinos in the event of a nearby supernova.

We determine the νR Majorana mass matrix from the experimental data on neutrino oscillations in the framework of a see-saw SO(10) model, where we impose the condition (MR)33=0 to avoid too large fine-tunings in the see-saw formula. We find a class of solutions with the two lowest neutrino masses almost degenerate and the scale of the matrix elements of MR in the range 1011–1012 GeV in agreement with Pati–Salam intermediate symmetry. We find also solutions with smaller neutrino masses, for which the scale of MR depends on the solution to the "solar neutrino problem" and on the value of the component of νe along the highest mass eigenstate, Ue3.

In view of the recently reported evidence for a nonzero Majorana mass of the electron neutrino, together with the established phenomena of atmospheric and solar neutrino oscillations, the case of three nearly mass-degenerate Majorana neutrinos is now an interesting possibility. We show in this paper how a natural pattern of symmetry breaking in the recently proposed A4 model of Majorana neutrino masses can accommodate the data on neutrino oscillations, resulting in the predictions sin 2 2θ atm = 1 and sin 2 2θ sol = 2/3.

Abstract We explore the connection between Dark Matter and neutrinos in a model inspired by radiative Type-II seessaw and scotogenic scenarios. In our model, we introduce new electroweakly charged states (scalars and a vector-like fermion) and impose a discrete ℤ2 symmetry. Neutrino masses are generated at the loop level and the lightest ℤ2-odd neutral particle is stable and it can play the role of a Dark Matter candidate. We perform a numerical analysis of the model showing that neutrino masses and flavour structure can be reproduced in addition to the correct dark matter density, with viable DM masses from 700 GeV to 30 TeV. We explore direct and indirect detection signatures and show interesting detection prospects by CTA, Darwin and KM3Net and highlight the complementarity between these observables.
