AbstractKnowledge-based System (KBS) technologies have been applied to a variety of knowledge-related tasks with varying degrees of success. Differentiating among classes of knowledge-related tasks, based on the amounts of problem-solving knowledge and case-specific data involved, can provide valuable insight into why this occurs. Based on this comparison, four classes of problems are described. One class, of data-intensive tasks, includes problem types that are difficult or impossible for humans to perform, yet may be solved in a cost-effective manner using currently accessible KBS technology. The characteristic features of problems in this class are given, together with an example of a successfully fielded knowledge-based system that solves a problem from this class.

Estate planning is one of the crucial elements of managing property during a person’s lifetime. It involves both handling and managing property during one’s lifetime and after death. For Muslims, the objectives of Shariah, which are known as Maqasid Shariah, can be attained if their finances are planned in a wise and cost-effective manner. Unfortunately, it was reported that frozen inheritance assets have steadily increased from the day of Independence, amounting to RM70 billion in 2020 indicating the seriousness of the matter. The freezing of inheritance property is detrimental to the economy and thus opposes the spirit of  Maqasid Shari’ah which recommends that it should be properly managed for the benefit of the public. This is where estate planning plays its role in ensuring quicker and easier distribution of assets and property. Hence, the objective of this research is to investigate Malaysian Muslims’ tendencies in estate management planning and its determinants. A total of 406 respondents throughout Peninsular Malaysia responded to the prepared survey, where the Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) approach was employed as the main data analysis for this study. The findings revealed that altruism, advantages and compliance were significant in influencing tendencies of Malaysian Muslims in Islamic estate planning. Surprisingly, service was found to be an insignificant factor in influencing the tendencies of Malaysian Muslims in Islamic estate planning. This study provides some insights on the role of policymakers and estate planning related industry in ensuring the compliance of estate planning product and increasing the awareness of Muslims to do estate planning by promoting the advantages and importance of doing so. Policymakers are also welcome to engage in this matter by providing earlier education on Islamic estate planning among Muslims in Malaysia.

Singapore’s commitment to knowledge-based economy (KBE) development in the past decade has enabled it to make a rapid and successful transition to knowledge-based city. This chapter focuses on how Singapore government has forged an environment that is conducive to innovations, new discoveries and the creation of new knowledge. In the process, Singapore has emerged as one of the top knowledge-based cities in the world through various frameworks used globally. In this period, Singapore strengthened its engagement with the global knowledge economy developing a creative industries development strategy which endorsed the importance of creative industries, aiming to position Singapore as a ‘new Asian creative hub’ (ERC Report, 2002, p.8). The Singapore experience represents one of few examples of how knowledge can become the driving force of economic growth and transformation. It provides valuable insight into how public policies have successfully negotiated the current global network economy to suit economic changes. Although Singapore’s developmental model has created benefits in many ways, it had also negatively constrained its development particularly in the area of knowledge creation and application to entrepreneurship and creativity.

Abstract:In stereotaxic neurosurgery, a variety of operative procedures focus on thalamic targets. The nomenclature of thalamic nuclei and sub-nuclei, however, has not yet been settled. In clinical and laboratory environments several terminologies coexist. This is an obstacle to both communication and a better understanding of recent electrophysiological findings. In the late 1980s, the application of new histochemical and immunohisto-chemical methods led to a deeper insight into existing correlations between the nomenclatures. As a uniform terminology of the thalamus is still lacking, we created a knowledge-based system (thalamus) which gives a comprehensible survey about the most important terminologies. The different nomenclatures are related to each other by organizing them in a component-integral relation. This part-whole relation contains both the knowledge on the subdivisions of the thalamus as well as the knowledge on the correlations between the various nomenclatures.

The electric and thermal properties of the resistor material in an automotive spark plug should be stable during its service lifetime. Containing many elements and many phases, this material has a very complex microstructure. Elemental mapping with an electron microprobe can reveal the distribution of all relevant elements throughout the sample. In this work, it is demonstrated that the charge-up effect, which would distort an electron image and, therefore, is normally to be avoided in an electron imaging work, could be used to advantage to reveal conductive and resistive zones in a sample. Its combination with elemental mapping can provide valuable insight into the underlying conductivity mechanism of the resistor. This work was performed in a CAMECA SX-50 microprobe. The spark plug used in the present report was a commercial product taken from the shelf. It was sectioned to expose the cross section of the resistor. The resistor was known not to contain the precious metal Au as checked on the carbon coated sample. The sample was then stripped of carbon coating and re-coated with Au.

Three levels of planning can be distinguished in grassland farming: strategic, tactical and operational. The purpose of strategic planning is to achieve a sustainable long-term fit of the farm business with its physical, social and financial environment. In pastoral farming, this essentially means developing plans that maximise and best match pasture growth with animal demand, while generating sufficient income to maintain or enhance farm resources and improvements, and attain personal and financial goals. Strategic plans relate to the whole farm business and are focused on the means to achieve future needs. They should be routinely (at least annually) reviewed and monitored for effectiveness through key performance indicators (e.g., Economic Farm Surplus) that enable progress toward goals to be measured in a timely and cost-effective manner. Failure to link strategy with control is likely to result in unfulfilled plans. Keywords: management, performance

AbstractThe aim of this paper is to offer an insight into innovation management in the knowledge-based society. It sets off by explaining the concept of knowledge-based society and why it bears relevance for the modern world. Next, innovation and related concepts are introduced. Furthermore, a presentation of National Innovation Systems (NIS) is made, their history and role in the understanding of a systemic approach to research, development and innovation at both national and global level. Next, the OECD main guidelines for the elaboration of national innovation policies are presented. Last but not least, an analysis of the current situation of research and innovation in Romania is also included.
