AbstractSince the end of the 1990s, there has been an increasing interest in the application of artificial intelligence (AI) planning techniques to solve real-life problems. In addition to characteristics of academic problems, such as the need to reason about actions, real-life problems require detailed knowledge elicitation, engineering, and management. A systematic design process in which Knowledge and Requirements Engineering tools play a fundamental role is necessary in such applications. One of the main challenges in such design process, and consequently in the study of Knowledge Engineering in AI planning, has been the analysis of requirements and their subsequent transformation into an input-ready model for planners. itSIMPLE is a research project dedicated to the study of a project process to support the design phases of real-life planning models. In this paper, we give an overview of itSIMPLE focusing on the main translation processes among a minimal set of representations: from requirements represented in Unified Modeling Language (UML) to Petri Nets and from UML models to planning domain definition language for problem solving.

AbstractPlanning, scheduling and constraint satisfaction are important areas in artificial intelligence (AI) with broad practical applicability. Many real-world problems can be formulated as AI planning and scheduling (P&S) problems, where resources must be allocated to optimize overall performance objectives. Frequently, solving these problems requires an adequate mixture of planning, scheduling and resource allocation to competing goal activities over time in the presence of complex state-dependent constraints. Constraint satisfaction plays an important role in solving such real-life problems, and integrated techniques that manage P&S with constraint satisfaction are particularly useful. Knowledge engineering supports the solution of such problems by providing adequate modelling techniques and knowledge extraction techniques for improving the performance of planners and schedulers. Briefly speaking, knowledge engineering tools serve as a bridge between the real world and P&S systems.

The objective of this chapter is to identify the role of BIMs in the architectural design process from the practitioners’ point of view. The chapter investigates the main factors affecting the practitioners’ use of BIM, and how BIM impacts their work and interactions. The chapter presents a holistic research approach as well as the findings from its application in four real-life projects. In these projects, much of the practitioners’ focus was on upgrading skills and improving technology. Nevertheless, a number of their challenges were linked to the nature of the architectural design process, particularly to its “hardto- grasp” iterative and intuitive features. A conclusion of this research indicates that the role of BIM is affected by the many interdependencies, relations and interfaces embedded in the highly complex and partly unpredictable real world practice. A future challenge would be to understand, master and balance these relationships - upstream and downstream across multiple levels, processes and activities. The presented holistic research approach and the related findings contributed to research which aimed to embrace the complexity of real-life problems and gain a more comprehensive understanding of what is happening in practice.

In the design process of maize combine harvester in China, there are characteristics of customization and high demand for diversification. Aiming at the problems of long design and development cycle, the structural design method of maize combine harvester header based on knowledge engineering is put forward, and the header of maize combine harvester is designed rapidly. Firstly, based on the design standards and specifications of agricultural machinery, the general design process of maize ear harvester header is determined. Secondly, according to the design knowledge and experience, the design method of the core parts of the header is determined, and an example model is established. Finally, based on the platform of MFC and Creo, integrating the design knowledge base, inference engine and parametric model, a rapid design system of maize ear harvester header is constructed. The rapid design of maize ear harvester header is realized, and the design and development efficiency of maize ear harvester header is improved so as to provide technical reference and support for improving the intelligent level of typical complex agricultural machinery equipment in China.

Today there is a new emphasis on a discipline related to knowledge engineering (KE): knowledge management (KM). The chapter shows that a Delphi methodology, developed and used with real success from 1986 through 2003, can be revised and up-dated to take a place in the spectrum of KE/KM. This new model combines elements of a Pareto technique at the front end of an small group Delphi paradigm/estimate-talk-estimate (SGDP/ETE) process to initially identify and sharpen the criticality of problems and their solutions. The final stage of the model uses real time Delphi (RTD) techniques. As a result, the final paradigm uses today's technology to achieve extremely accurate decision making and indicate what can be successful courses of action across many venues. Examples will be given of how this new model could be applied to current, real-life problems in three very different arenas.

One of the more visible tasks when designing a turbocharger is the optimized design for a compressor and a turbine. The ultimate measure of a successful turbocharger design, however, is how well it works with a specific engine at various operating conditions. Final design decisions must be based on the engine-turbocharger system as a whole, rather than only on the individual component performance. This paper describes the effort to develop an integrated design system which allows the user to design and optimize a turbocharger on a system level. With the basic engine parameters specified, along with simple models for other commonly used components, such as the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR), wastegate, and intercooler, the program may be linked to two powerful meanline programs that can handle the fast iterations of the design and analysis of a compressor and a turbine. The output is either a new compressor or turbine that best matches the operation of the engine or the performance of an existing turbocharger at a specific engine operating condition. A case study is presented where the program is applied in a real-life design situation to fit a new turbocharger for a large locomotive 18-cylinder diesel engine. The tool is extensively used in guiding the selection of the turbocharger and in the simulation of the overall system performance. The test data from the new design show close agreement with the simulation results, as well as an improvement over the original design.

PT. Duta Nichirindo Pratama is a company engaged in the field of Autoparts Manufacture. Barcode is the identity of an item / product on the package. Barcode technology has been used as the identity of goods in a production. Barcodes are used to facilitate the identification of goods produced. Paste the barcode on the packaging of packaging results at PT. Duta Nichirindo Pratama is done manually, but there are often errors attached to the barcode on a similar packaging. This research will design and create a system based on Visual Basic.Net and Arduino to select barcode attachment errors that have the potential to be sent to consumers. The system is designed using Unified Modeling Language (UML) diagrams, database design and interface menu design. The system created will then be tested to detect the black box test. With a computing-based design system that functions to detect barcodes on the packaging automatically, the problem of sticking barcodes on the packaging can be detected.

Information technology is rapidly developed in this century that impact to various aspects of the organization really need information technology to support the performance and everyday business processes. In health services, information technology is required to process and storage the patient medical records, so that the patient's medical record is well preserved, and competitive advantage can be obtained between patient and polyclinic. The application of Customer Relationship Management (CRM) approach can be developed by implementing information system of medical record history to get new patient and retain existing patient, improving relationship with patient and maintaining patient loyalty as well as supporting the company/organization to provide excellent service to customers in real time through the advantage of information technology. The aims of this research are to understand patient medical record by CRM approach and Unified Modeling Language (UML) for system design, system validation using Forum Group Discussion (FGD), and using software testing Model ISO 9126. The result of this research are Medical Record History Information System and the result of system validation with FGD is 100% accepted, the result of system test using Model ISO 9126 is good with success rate 82,86%, so it can give contribution to polyclinic.
