Intelligent multimedia systems (IMMS) assist users in choosing the information content, and to design the information presentation, that satisfies their needs and idiosyncrasies. Towards this target, IMMSs posses and utilize knowledge concerning the means and function (purpose) of a presentation. ‘Means’ denote communication techniques (information carriers and modalities), as well as information content and information characteristics. The ‘function of a pr esentation’ denotes the communicative purpose of the presentation, methods for achieving that purpose, as well as a user's goals and tasks.

This article examines the influence of static/interactive infographics on reflective/impulsive students’ academic achievement. The study sample consisted of 80 undergraduate students who were divided into two groups according to their cognitive style (reflective/impulsive). Each group was further divided into two sub-groups based on the type of infographics (static/interactive) to be evaluated. The findings showed that interactive infographics are more effective than static infographics in improving academic achievement. Reflective students outperformed impulsive students in terms of academic achievement, and there was a significant interaction between interactive infographics and reflective students. This study may serve as a guide for educators and designers of learning resources in selecting the most appropriate forms of technology conforming to students’ varying cognitive styles. Implications for practice or policy: The designers of e-learning environments must focus on the cognitive style of each learner. The design of those environments must take into account the diversity of information presentation methods to meet the various cognitive styles. Students' academic achievement can be improved by the use of interactive infographics due to their richness in material, multimedia approach, and interactivity that stimulate and communicate with learners’ senses and positively affect their acquisition of information.

This article presents a research project carried out at the BT Mobility Research Center with the aim of developing appropriate applications for pervasive iTV, paying special attention to the personal and social contextual usage of this media within the entertainment, work, and government environments. It prospects a future trend in the use of pervasive interactive multimedia systems in future communications scenarios for mobile and pervasive iTV, that is, the use of handhelds as interfaces to extend and enhance the TV experience outside the home boundaries. The new scenarios discussed in this article are based on the assumption that mobile phones interconnected with other surrounding interfaces (e.g., iTV, PCs, PDAs, in-car-navigators, smart-house appliances, etc.), will be decisive in the creation of pervasive interactive multimedia systems. With its recent development into becoming an interactive system, TV seems to increasingly replace traditional “passive” TV platforms through active viewers-participation (Lamont & Afshan, 1999). Moreover, interactive television gives viewer the opportunity to extend their UX of television for activities that currently occur more typically on the Web (Steemers, 1998). These activities are consequent to the enhanced communication possibilities that have been enabled by new media: users can browse information, personalize their viewing choices, play interactive games, carry out e-commerce activities (shopping, banking, voting, etc.), and play increasingly active roles in broadcast programs (to the extent of interacting with other viewers).

Learning is more than knowledge acquisition; it often involves the active participation of the learner in a variety of knowledge- and skills-based learning and training activities. Interactive multimedia technology can support the variety of interaction channels and languages required to facilitate interactive learning and teaching. A conceptual architecture for interactive educational multimedia can support the development of such multimedia systems. Such an architecture needs to embed multimedia technology into a coherent educational context. A framework based on an integrated interaction model is needed to capture learning and training activities in an online setting from an educational perspective, to describe them in the human-computer context, and to integrate them with mechanisms and principles of multimedia interaction.

The factors influencing the dissemination of public opinion on social media, the main carrier of public opinion, are diverse, complex and changeable. Existing studies of influential factors of public opinion dissemination focus on the information itself and information sources in the dissemination process, failing to consider the comprehensive influence of multidimensional factors, such as information content, sources and channels. This study takes the identification of multidimensional influential factors of social media information dissemination as the research object and comprehensively sorts out the influencing factors of public opinion. To improve the scientific basis and accuracy of the research, multidimensional factors, including information characteristics, dissemination network structure and user-level attributes, are selected to analyze the effect of influential factors in different dimensions on the dissemination of social media public opinion information using econometric models. Three main conclusions of this paper are as follows: (1) The traditional information characteristics (information content) and information source attributes (user-level factor) are not the only key factors affecting information dissemination, while the information channel (network structure) is worth more consideration. (2) Netizens tend to pay more attention to the psychological and emotional attributes of information when forwarding public opinions. The communication mode in which offline social elites enlighten the public no longer exists; whether a user is a network celebrity or lives in the central area no longer significantly affects public opinion dissemination. (3) The higher the total amount of information users release, the more the information would interfere with the public opinion. This is mainly because users with a higher level of activity may release more invalid information about advertising that has nothing to do with public opinion events.

In the teleoperation of construction machinery, the work situation is usually determined from images shown on several screens. However, because images displayed on screens are flat, information presented is poor compared to information obtained with the naked eye, such as the view angle, resolution, and depth information. Focusing on information presentation during the teleoperation of construction machinery, this report investigates information presentation methods in mound-leveling work, grasping work, and drilling positioning conditions.
