In the last twenty years, some probiotics, such as Aspergillus oryzae or A. niger (Pioneer, 1989), yeast culture (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) (Wallace, 1994) and some microbial growth promoters (e.g. thiamine, niacin) (Shield, 1981), were used as feed additives in order to improve rumen conditions and cellulose digestion in the rumen and milk yield of dairy cows. The present study was planned to determine whether dietary supplemental baker's yeast and niacin would have individual and/or synergistic effects on milk yield and milk composition of dairy cows under our experimental conditions.

Influence of Pre- and Postpartum Supplementation of Fibrolytic Enzymes and Yeast Culture, or Both, on Performance and Metabolic Status of Dairy CowsThe aim of the study was to determine the degree to which feeding total mixed rations (TMR) with fibrolytic enzymes and/or live yeast cultures to periparturient dairy cows will affect feed intake and conversion, milk yield and chemical composition, and metabolic and reproductive parameters of the cows. The experiment was conducted from 3 weeks before calving to 10 weeks of lactation on 36 Polish Red-and-White Holstein-Friesian (PHF Red) cows assigned to four analogous groups, 9 animals each. Cows from the control group (C) were fed an unsupplemented diet, those from group E received a diet supplemented (15 g/day) with enzyme preparation (Fibrozyme™) containing a blend of active xylanase and cellulase, cows from group D a diet with yeast preparation (Yea - Sacc1026) supplemented (10 g/day) with Saccharomyces cerevisiae1026 live yeast culture, and cows from group ED were fed a diet supplemented with a mixture (25 g/day) of both feed additives. The preparations were added to the concentrate included in the TMR diet. It was found that groups E and D showed a tendency towards higher dry matter and nutrient intake compared to group C. In groups E, D and ED there was also a tendency towards higher milk yield (by about 4-12% in the first 3 weeks of lactation) and slightly higher crude protein content (by an average of 0.16, 0.09 and 0.04 percentage units, respectively), without a clear effect on the other milk constituents. Significantly (P<0.05) lower milk urea content was also noted in group E compared to group C. Cows from groups E and D compared to group C, were characterized by better (P<0.05) efficiency of feed and nutrient conversion for kg milk production, especially during the first three weeks after calving. The experimental cows also showed a tendency towards improved blood metabolic profile, especially decreased levels of beta-hydroxybutyric acid (BHBA) and reduced activity of aspartate aminotransferase (AST). The investigated preparations had no significant effect on the body weight, body condition and reproductive parameters of the cows.

A feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the influence of live yeast culture (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) on milk production, composition, and blood biochemistry of dairy ewes during the machine milking period. The control group (CD) was fed a concentrate mixture and hay and grazed twice daily, while the second (YS3) and third (YS6) groups were fed the same diet supplemented with 3 or 6 g of live yeast culture (Yea Sacc1026), respectively. The treated groups had significantly higher values (p < 0.05) for fat corrected milk (FCM) (1221, 1116 and 940 g/day, for YS6, YS3 and CD group, respectively) and fat-protein corrected milk (FPCM) (1204, 1103 and 931 g/day, for YS6, YS3 and CD group, respectively), while the values for milk yield, fat yield and lactose yield were higher (p < 0.05) only in the YS6 group compared to the CD group. Milk yield values were constantly higher in the YS6 group than in the control group while the values for the YS3 group were more variable during milking. Milk composition was not significantly affected by yeast supplementation with the exception of urea values which were lower (p < 0.05) in the YC6 group. Yeast administration influenced β-hydroxy-butyrate (BHB) values, which were higher (p < 0.05) in the treated groups; and non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) values, which were higher (p < 0.05) only in the YS6 group compared to the control group. Other blood biochemistry values were not influenced by the treatments. We conclude that supplementation with live yeast culture, under the conditions of our experiment, had a significant effect on the performance and metabolism of grazing dairy ewes during the machine milking period. Based on more constant results, we could recommend the inclusion of live yeast culture (Yea Sacc1026) at 6g/animal/day as appropriate for field conditions.

The effects of addition of direct-fed microbials prepared from Saccharomyces cerevisiae (SC) and Aspergillus oryzae (AO) to ruminant diets was examined in two experiments. Experiment 1 was designed to study the effects of microbial supplements on ruminal and total tract digestibility, ruminal fermentation, bacterial counts and bacterial colonization of fibrous feed, in eight ruminally cannulated steers. The steers were used in a factorial arrangement within a replicated, concurrently run 4 × 4 Latin square design. Treatments were: (1) 60% rolled barley + 40% timothy hay (C); (2) C + 10 g head−1 d−1 of SC; (3) C + 3 g head−1 d−1 of AO fermentation extract; (4) C + 10 g head−1 d−1 of a mixture of SC and AO. In exp. 2, milk yield and composition were monitored following the addition of microbial supplements to the diets described above and fed to dairy cows. The addition of AO, alone or in combination with SC, stimulated (P < 0.10) ruminal fermentation with higher concentrations of acetate (P < 0.01), propionate (P = 0.07), and total VFA (P < 0.01) when sampled prior to feeding. Accordingly, ruminal pH was lower (P < 0.01) in animals receiving AO, alone or combined with SC. Aspergillus oryzae, when supplemented alone, tended (P > 0.10) to increase ruminal NH3-N concentration. These changes in ruminal fermentation did not affect DMI or ruminal and total tract digestibility. The addition of direct-fed microbials did not affect bacterial counts or bacterial colonization of roughage in the rumen. Milk yield, milk composition and feed intake were not affected by the addition of SC to the diet of dairy cows. However, supplementation of the diet with AO alone or in combination with SC increased (P < 0.05) the ratio of milk yield/DMI. Motile Aeromonas Septicaemia disease (MAS) attacking tilapia has increased in recent years as a consequence of intensive aquaculture activities, which led to losses in aquaculture industry. The agent causing MAS disease is Aeromonas hydrophila. The disease can be controlled with the β-glucan. As immunostimulants, β-glucans can also increase resistance in farmed tilapia. Studies on the use of β-glucan extracted from baker's yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae was intended to evaluate the non-specific immune system of tilapia that were challenged with Aeromonas hydrophila. The method used was an experimental method with a completely randomized design consisting of four treatments with three replicats. The dose of β-glucan used as treatments were 0 mg.kg-1 fish (Control), 5 mg.kg-1 fish (B), 10 mg.kg-1 fish (C) and 20 mg.kg-1 fish (D), each treatment as injected three times at intervals of 3 days, the injection volume of 0.5 ml/fish for nine days and resistance surveillance for seven days. The results showed that the difference in the amount of β-glucan and the frequency of the injected real influence on total leukocytes, phagocytic activity and resistance. Total leukocytes, phagocytic activity and resistance to treatment was best achieved by the administration of C a dose of  10 mg.kg-1 of the fish© Penyakit Motil Aeromonas Septicaemia (MAS) yang menyerang ikan nila mengalami peningkatan selama beberapa tahun terakhir sebagai konsekuensi dari kegiatan akuakultur intensif, yang menyebabkan kerugian dalam industri budidaya. Agen utama penyebab penyakit MAS adalah Aeromonas hydrophila. Untuk mengendalikan penyakit tersebut dapat dilakukan dengan pemberian β-glukan. Sebagai imunostimulan, β-glukan juga dapat  meningkatkan resistensi pada ikan nila yang dibudidayakan. Pengkajian mengenai pemanfaatan β-glukan yang diekstrak dari ragi roti Saccharomyces cerevisiae dimaksudkan untuk menguji sistem imun non spesifik ikan nila yang diuji tantang dengan bakteri Aeromonas hydrophila. Metode yang digunakan yaitu metode eksperimen dengan rancangan acak lengkap yang terdiri dari empat perlakuan dan tiga ulangan. Dosis β-glukan  yang digunakan sebagai perlakuan sebesar 0 mg.kg-1 ikan (Kontrol), 5 mg.kg-1 ikan (B), 10 mg.kg-1 ikan (C) dan 20 mg.kg-1 ikan (D), masing-masing perlakuan diinjeksi sebanyak 3 kali dengan interval waktu 3 hari selama 9 hari, volume injeksi 0,5 mL/ekor ikan dan pengamatan resistensi selama tujuh hari. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan perbedaan jumlah β-glukan dan frekuensi pemberian yang diinjeksikan memberikan pengaruh nyata terhadap total leukosit, aktivitas fagositosis dan resistensi. Total leukosit, aktivitas fagositosis dan resistensi terbaik dicapai pada perlakuan C dengan dosis 10 mg.kg-1 ikan©

The study was conducted to evaluate the effect of feeding herbal galactogogue preparation (Sanjivani biokseera) on the milk yield and milk constituents in lactating Kankrej cows. Thirty-two lactating Kankrej cows in their 1st to 6th lactation were taken for the experiment from 3 days after calving up to 52 days postpartum. All the animals were fed as per the standard seasonally available roughages and concentrates to meet their nutritional requirements. The cows were randomly divided into two uniform groups of 16 cows in each according to initial milk yield and milk composition. The animals in group-I were not given any supplement and served as control. The animals in group-II were given Sanjivani biokseera (Naturewell Industries) @ 60 g per day for 1-month, commencing 3 days after calving, in addition to the usual feeds/fodders. A clear difference was observed in milk yield from day 8 onward of experiment between groups with significant (plessthan0 0.05) higher values from day 16-52 in cows fed herbal galactogogue as compared to control, but no such distinct effect on milk constituents was observed on day 52 when analyzed. The use of herbal galactogogue significantly (p lessthan 0.05) increased the overall average of 52 days milk production, which was 9.34 ± 0.21 lit/day in supplemented as compared to 7.75 ± 0.26 lit/day in control animals. It was concluded that herbal galactogogue (Sanjivani biokseera) could increase milk yield in lactating dairy cows through its galactopoetic property and improved rumen environment.
