Establishing a High Level of Knowledge Regarding Bioterrorist Threats in Emergency Department Physicians: Methodology and the Results of a National Bio-Preparedness Project

AbstractIntroduction:Medical systems worldwide are facing the new threat of morbidity associated with the deliberate dispersal of microbiological agents by terrorists. Rapid diagnosis and containment of this type of unannounced attack is based on the knowledge and capabilities of medical staff. In 2004, the knowledge of emergency department physicians of anthrax was tested. The average test score was 58%. Consequently, a national project on bioterrorism preparedness was developed. The aim of this article is to present the project in which medical knowledge was enhanced regarding a variety of bioterrorist threats, including cutaneous and pulmonary anthrax, botulinum, and smallpox.Methods:In 2005, military physicians and experts on bioterrorism conducted special seminars and lectures for the staff of the hospital emergency department and internal medicine wards.Later, emergency department senior physicians were drilled using one of the scenarios.Results:Twenty-nine lectures and 29 drills were performed in 2005.The average drill score was 81.7%.The average score of physicians who attended the lecture was 86%, while those who did not attend the lectures averaged 78.3% (NS).Conclusions:Emergency department physicians were found to be highly knowledgeable in nearly all medical and logistical aspects of the response to different bioterrorist threats. Intensive and versatile preparedness modalities, such as lectures, drills, and posters, given to a carefully selected group of clinicians, can increase their knowledge, and hopefully improve their response to a bioterrorist attack.

This preliminary study investigated the: (i) level of knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) among members of Kulliyyah of Allied Health Sciences (KAHS), International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) regarding Islamisation of knowledge (IOK);  (ii) correlation of KAP and IOK with the duration of service and level of exposure to IOK-related activities; (iii) comparison of KAP between departments in KAHS towards the understanding of IOK, and (iv) level of KAP in IOK between KAHS academics and non-academic staff.  Since studies on the integration of religious worldview in health sciences faculties are scarce, this study will be investigating the effectiveness of IOK programmes at the faculty level. A total of 74 staff participated in the study. The response rate was 65.5% out of 113 distributed questionnaires. All respondents have average knowledge (50±28%) in IOK and showed positive attitude (78±32.5%) towards IOK.  The knowledge of Islamisation in KAHS correlates positively with the duration of service (p<0.05) and the level of exposure to IOK-related activities (p<0.05). However, answers given to some questions indicated that the staff perceptions and knowledge of IOK are ambiguous and may suggest a misunderstanding of the Islamisation term. Furthermore, an average score was found among the academic respondents with regards to their integration of IOK into practice.  These shortcomings may affect the integration and implementation of IOK either in classrooms, clinics or offices and lead to a poor integration of the Islamisation agenda to the students as well as the patients. Hence, there is a need to design workshops and programmes more towards practical approaches of IOK into health-based sciences as well as the implementation of IOK agenda at the workplace, rather than the theoretical aspects per se. In conclusion, most of the respondents have positive attitude towards the IOK movement in KAHS despite the high level of knowledge among some members, in particular the academic staff, is not yet translated into practice.

The aim of this study is to know the understanding ability of exercises of higher order thinking skill-based anecdote text in 10th grade students of senior high school 1 Tanjung Tiram. This study was conducted in the odd semester of the 2018/2019 academic year which was planned starting from the collection of knowledge data to the writing as a whole. The subjects of this study were 10th grade students of Senior High School 1 Tanjung Tiram as many as 30 students. The object carried out in this study is a guide to higher order thinking skill (HOTS)-based knowledge instruments. The result shows that the understanding ability of exercises of higher order thinking skill-based anecdote text the students get an average score of 60.56% in the "sufficient" category. Thus, it can be stated that a high level of knowledge instrument on students of senior high school 1 Tanjung Tiram with sufficient quality.

Introduction: Burnout is a syndrome conceptualized as result of the chronic stress at the work place which was not successfully managed. The possible negative effects on the medical staff, the patients and the health institutions have generated interest and motivated the research to understand the possible causes, these effects also influence the burnout predictors. The medical services suppliers within the emergency department have had one of the greatest exhaution occurences even before the pandemic. Being in the first line in contact with the suspected patients or confirmed with COVID-19 infection intensifies this fact. Both the working factors (working hours, years of practice, number of treated patients, professional development activities) and the socio- demographic factors (age, sex, civil status, income, education) are associated with the exhaustion at the work place. Material and methods: I have studied a total of 120 participants, receiving 115 valid questionnaires, the answering ratio being 95,83%. This was a descriptive, multicentre, transversal study of the medical and the auxiliary staff within the department UPU-SMURD of the County Clinic Emergency Hospital “Sf. Ap. Andrei” Galați. The staff gave their consent and attended a combined interview which consisted of a pilot questionnaire and a demographic questionnaire. Results and discussions: The average score of exhaustion at the staff level was 3.25, a great percentage of the doctors within the ED (45.8%), (n=24) indicates an increased level of exhaustion, only 26.8% (n=80) of nurses show an increased level of exhaustion. The average score of the stress level shown by the staff is 3.1, 66.6% (n=24) among which the doctors with an increased stress level 9.1% (n=9) auxiliary staff, 23.8% (n=80) of nurses. Conclusions: The results show us a high exhaustion, stress and depression ratio at the emergency doctors in comparison with the other professional categories within the ED. A high level of professional satisfaction is accompanied by an increased level of stress and of self-esteem.

AbstractObjectives:Stress levels among staff in the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital Emergency Department were studied by questionnaire in 2000, which demonstrated a high level of self reported stress. The aim of this study was to ascertain if stress levels had reduced following changes in the department.Method:The study was repeated using the same questionnaire in 2006, after changes had occurred.Results:There was a significant reduction in the percentage of staff that reported they were under severe or unbearable stress, from 37% in 2000 to 10% in 2006 (p = 0.002). A total of 60% felt the social environment of their work was satisfactory in 2006 compared to 40% in 2000 (p = 0.03). Compared to 2000, a significantly lower proportion reported they had a low degree of control over their job, and a significantly higher proportion reported a medium level of control over their job in 2006 (p = 0.03).Conclusions:Compared with the results of the previous study, reported stress levels have reduced overall, which coincided with a significant increase in staffing levels in the department.

Optimal asthma therapy requires collaboration between patients and pharmacists as health workers. Through pharmacy services, pharmacists have the role of providing education and monitoring asthma therapy. But the level of pharmacist's knowledge will be important in its implementation. This study studies the level of medical knowledge from the community in the city of East Surabaya. The research design used in this study was cross sectional and data collection was carried out through questionnaires from previous studies. The level of knowledge includes 6 domains, namely the domain of pharmacological therapy, etiology and pathophysiology, risk factors, resolution, symptoms, and non-pharmacological therapy. The subject is a pharmacist who practices at a pharmacy in East Surabaya. Data is collected by visiting pharmacies one by one to invite pharmacists from each pharmacy. Interviews were conducted directly with research subjects. In this study descriptive data analysis was performed. The study was conducted from April to June 2019 with 108 people. The results of the study concluded: Most subjects had moderate / standard asthma knowledge (37.96%) and only a small proportion had a high level of knowledge (27.77%). From the questionnaire questions, the lowest domain was in non-pharmacological therapy (94.00) and the lowest value was in the question domain (43.00). Therefore, pharmacists need to increase their knowledge in order to help asthma patients achieve optimal treatment. Keywords: asthma, pharmacist, pharmacy, knowledge
