Do the BSRI and PAQ Really Measure Masculinity and Femininity?

The two most used instruments to assess masculinity (M) and femininity (F) are the Bem Sex Role Inventory (BSRI) and the Personality Attributes Questionnaire (PAQ). Two hypotheses will be tested: a) multidimensionality versus bidimensionality, and b) to what extent the two instruments, elaborated to measure the same constructs, classify subjects in the same way. Participants were 420 high school students, 198 women and 222 men, aged 12–15 years. Exploratory factor analysis and internal consistency analysis were carried out and log-linear models were tested. The data support a) the multidimensionality of both instruments and b) the lack of full concordance in the classification of persons according to the fourfold typology. Implications of the results are discussed regarding the supposed theory behind instrumentality/expressiveness and masculinity/femininity, as well as for the use of both instruments to classify different subjects into the four distinct types.

In order to explain chemistry subjects by linking them to everyday life and accordingly, to improve the quality of education, context-based learning has come into use widely in chemistry teaching recently. The aim of this study is to develop a scale to determine secondary school students’ motivations towards chemistry activities supported with context-based learning. Validity and reliability analysis of the scale were done with the participation of 525 high school students. To determine the structural validity of the scale, exploratory factor analysis was done. The factor analysis concluded that the scale had a three-factor structure with 20 items. Cronbach Alpha internal consistency coefficient of the scale was calculated to be 0.91. Cronbach Alpha internal consistency coefficients of sub dimensions were found to be 0,84; 0,80 and 0.81 respectively. In the light of the findings of this study, the scale developed is concluded to be of use in determining high school students’ motivations towards context-based chemistry. The study aims to develop a scale to assess high school students’ attitudes toward sustainable development. For this purpose, 90 Likert-type scale items pertaining to attitudes were initially developed based on existing literature. Further consultations with experts led to a reduction of the item count to 60, followed by a further reduction to 40 items. The scale was administered to 509 students enrolled in an Anatolian high school, a science high school, and an Anatolian religious vocational high school in Akcaabat. The data gathered were analyzed using the SPSS 18.0 statistics package. An item analysis, comprising the item-total correlation test, was performed on the scale, which was followed by a reliability analysis that focused on the Cronbach’s alpha internal consistency factor. Furthermore, factor analysis was performed to determine the validity of the scale. The factor analysis led to the development of a two-factor scale composed of a total of 14 items. The Cronbach’s alpha internal consistency factor of the scale is 0.811. The scale was deemed appropriate for assessing the attitudes of high school students with regards to sustainable development.

Background: Students’ attributions of their grades mayaffect their academic performance. However, lack ofevidence supporting the validity and reliability of theinstruments measuring attribution is a major concern.Objective: To analyze the factor structure, convergentvalidity and reliability of the Academic Attributional StyleQuestionnaire adapted to Mexican high school students(EAT-A). Method: The sample consisted of 557 MexicoCity students of both sexes aged between 15 and 19. Usinga confirmatory factor analysis for both success and failureattributions, a 7-factor structure and a 4-factor structureof the EAT-A were tested. The instrument’s convergentvalidity, internal consistency and reliability were examined.Results: Only the 7-factor structure showed adequate fitindices: RMSEA = .046; SRMR = .053; CFI = .961; TLI =.952 and χ²/gl = 2.72. In addition, the EAT-A evidencedconvergent validity concerning success and reliabilitymotivation. Conclusion: The EAT-A is a quick- and easy-to-administer instrument for measuring students’attributions of their grades in a reliable and valid manner.

The Awareness of Attitudes and Relationship Expectations (AWARE) Inventory was administered to 160 high school students in Wyoming. Factor analysis showed the inventory did not have the expected 11 dimensional factor structure. Most of the intended 10-item scales yielded unacceptably low estimates of internal consistency reliability. Through an iterative process, one internally consistent scale of 17 items (α = .80) was derived. Researchers should be careful to evaluate the AWARE Inventory with their own samples before proceeding under an assumption that its scales reliably assess the 11 dimensions expected.

  The aim of the study was to verify the psychometric characteristics of assessment of the indicators of school performance in the light of redressing skills of high school students in the Taif Government. And to achieve aims of that study, the descriptive analysis was used. The sample size was 542 of high school students, they were selected by stratified random sampling. The researcher prepared a scale that included 48 sections, and the scale was verified by using factor analysis 'exploratory and confirmatory ones', and measurement of validity of internal consistency 'Construct validity' by using Pearson correlation coefficient, the scale reliability was verified by using Cronbach Alpha coefficient and test- retest coefficient. Also, Independent samples T- test was used to find the differences according to the specialization variable. The study showed the availability of validity indications of the scale of indicators of school performance in the light of redressing skills of high school students in the Taif Government, through the face validity and validity of internal consistency 'Construct validity'. In addition to, discriminant validity and construct validity, by using factor analysis of principal factors. The reliability of the scale was verified and the scale was characterized by good and acceptable reliability coefficients, as the test- retest reliability coefficient = 0.85, while reliability coefficient of internal consistency according to Cronbach Alpha equation = 0.89 for the entire scale. The results showed presence of statically significant differences in the total score and all the aspects of the scale of indicators of school performance in the light of redressing skills of high school students in the Taif Government due to differences in specializations of sample size, and the differences were prejudiced in favor of students of scientific specialization. According to the results of the study, the researcher recommended using the scale of indicators of school performance in the light of redressing skills of high school students in the Taif Government as it's characterized by good validity and reliability indications.

This study focused on the statistical technique using factor analysis to validate the scale measuring high school students’ attitudes towards Biology. The study sample consisted of 500 students (male = 220, female = 280) from public and private institutions offering high school education with Biology as an elective subject, in Islamabad. As part of this study, the scale developed by (Ahmad and Jamil, 2019) for the attitude of students towards biology was adopted. Research has shown that attitude and achievement are interrelated. Previously, research studies used exploratory factor analysis to analyze the validity of the scale construction. The present study used exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis to fill the gap in the literature because, after exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis is required to test whether the models estimate the intended theoretical constructs. Following the procedure of factor analysis, six factors of the Biology Attitude Scale (BAS) were identified. The findings of the study show that the scale had a multidimensional construct. Further, the internal consistency reliability analysis was performed. Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was 0.86 which shows high internal consistency. It is recommended that BAS is a reliable and valid measurement tool that can be used to determine the attitude of secondary students towards Biology.

"Objective: The goal of this research was to revise Litman’s Epistemic Curiosity Scale (ECS), so that it can be applied to the evaluation of the developmental characteristics among Chinese senior high school students. Methods: 25 senior high school students were first invited to a trial test for confirming the item comprehensibility, after then 602 senior high students were enrolled to the formal testing for the item analysis and exploratory factor analysis. And 533 Chinese high school students responding ECS were submitted to test the construct validity of the localized Chinese-version ECS. Then the scale was applied to 366 subjects to test the internal consistency indices and criteria correlation validity. Finally, 153 senior high school students were used to test test-retest reliability of the ECS. Results: All of the 10 items were retained, through exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis, the two-factor model which was consistent with the original scale proved to be the most appropriate, its main goodness of fit indices were: x2/df=2.68, CFI=0.93, NFI=0.93, TLI=0.90, GFI=0.97, AGFI=0.95, and RMSEA=0.06. The study found internal consistency indices (Cronbach’s alpha) from 0.73 to 0.78 in the first three samples. In addition, the ECS had a high correlation with Chinese version of Trait Curiosity Scale (r=0.53, p<0.001), test-retest reliability over 2-month interval was 0.54 to 0.56 for each of the 2 sub-scale and 0.64 for the total ECS. Conclusion: Findings in these studies support the cross-cultural validity of the ECS in Chinese senior high school students."
